From all over my flist:

Ask me my Top Five Whatevers. Fannish or literary or otherwise. Any top fives. Doesn't matter what, really! Fandoms, ice cream flavours, cartoon moments, women in my fandoms, OTPs, ideal holiday destinations, goals for the future, celebrity crushes, books I wish would be made into movies, love songs. And I will answer them all in a new post (or in comments). Possibly with pictures.

Remix duello signups are open! I offered up "Freaks and Geeks", which I've been dying for a remix of ever since I wrote it. So, EEE! did not include much of a "Dear Remixer" letter, because really, what would I say? I understand "Dear Yuletide Writer" letters, but "dear remixer" ones seem to stretch it more, and in this case, where the remixer is taking one specific fic, they seem really unnecessary. Of course, I could always be wrong.

In-laws are coming tonight. Pizza for all!

I was at the park the other day, pushing Trevor on a swing. There was a couple next to me with a baby that looked to be 8 or 9 months, maybe even younger, and he was very obviously their first child. They were totally enamored with him, and they were just fascinated with him on the swing. (The baby was adorable, and he was cracking up.) And I was very aware I was standing there pushing my second, thinking about what I was going to do after they went to bed that night and what movie to watch.

I'm in absolutely no way mocking the parents who were next to me; instead, it really took me back. I remember those days of thinking every last thing Toby did was new and exciting and cause for pulling out the camera. I'm very glad that the days of being a new parent are over- they were hard and I did not enjoy the infant stage. But watching this couple with their baby made me remember that first year very fondly, and all the wonderful moments in it.

Now to go wake up my own little hellions :)

It looks like [livejournal.com profile] remixduello may be a go. :) The mods haven't said what fandoms will be eligible yet. Interestingly I haven't even considered participating in HP. Partly because it's been so long since I've been active in that fandom, and partly because I really dislike writing Snape or Draco, and they're popular enough characters in the HP fandom that getting a fic with one or the other is highly possible. Also, none of my fics in HP beg for remixing like some of my BSG fics do.

Having a bit of a lousy day. The kids have been fine, but I've either got a summer cold or a sinus infection. My head feels like it's been filled with concrete and I just want to sleep. I don't seem to be dropping off, though. Plus, I just want chocolate. Ugh. And yet again, I've tried to make plans with someone- anyone- and no luck. Why is it so hard to find someone for my kid to play with????? (and for me to talk to?) ::Grumble::

Was reading my new EW, and the columnist this time (male) had an article on how few movies these days pass the Bechdel Test. You know, as much as I liked Inception, I did notice it about that. I don't mind so much in Inception- it was really a very small movie, although very few of the roles really had to be one gender or the other. The thing for me is, it seems like movies involving women are still cornered off into SITC/Eat, Pray, Love type things. I want sci-fi, thanks. Women in sci-fi. ::Is ready for Annie and Sabrina and Felicia and Caroline to meet the world, except still researching::

Need to send my rough draft in for [livejournal.com profile] bsg_bigbang. I was hoping to get Chapter 5 done before I submitted, but it won't happen. But I'm really curious to see who will pick my story for art, and what kind of art I'll get. I'm really getting excited about some of the scenes I've written.

I am sort of looking forward to getting back to other things, though. I still want to finish The Struggles Make You Stronger and The House That Tom Built. I'm finding I really want to read/write more about Hoshi in the immediate aftermath of the Space Between Us universe. I'm in the mood for recovery fic. ::Sigh::

Oh well. Back to writing.
lls_mutant: (Default)
Oh, COOL!!!!

There's a new challenge in the works- Remix Duello. What you do is that in this challenge, you pick ONE story for your remixer to remix. They have to remix THAT STORY. So if you have a fic you desperately want the remix of, this is your chance!

However- there's a catch. If you click on that entry, you'll see that not all fandoms are eligible for this. Which makes sense, right? Anyway, if you want to participate, and you want BSG to be an eligible fandom, GO VOTE!

(ETA: Sorry- I was unclear. Go say you'll participate!!!! This is mainly directed at the BSG writers on my list :) )

(Please? I'm already sorting through with what I might want remixed, although who are we kidding? I totally know. I wouldn't ask someone to remix something long, and I totally want a remixed version of Freaks and Geeks. And there's even someone who's got the comm friended that... I mean, seriously. How awesome would the Helo version of Freaks and Geeks written by [livejournal.com profile] sabaceanbabe be??????? ::crosses fingers and holds her breath::)

Question for the Dollhouse Fans-

cut in case anyone has spoiler issues )
lls_mutant: (Default)
Monday. Yay. Sense my excitement.

1.) [livejournal.com profile] bsgficexchange started posting! YAY! And the fic for me is up already! It's called Keeping Count, and it's an awesome Dee/Narcho story. My guess on who wrote it is [livejournal.com profile] queenofthrace, because she mentioned wanting to write Dee with someone who makes her happy, and I totally prompted Dee/Narcho. :) But no matter who wrote it, the fic is absolutely wonderfully excellent, and should be read by many many people. (hint, hint :) ) Actually, all of the fics posted so far are fantastic- Lee and a spiritual journey (LIKE CRACK FOR ME!), Paulla's backstory, and a Gaeta-Adama fic that would not have made as good of television as Blood on the Scales, but would have made me happier :)

2.) A pretty! [livejournal.com profile] geekbynight made me a gorgeous Team Mutiny graphic. Father-son vibes all over the place with this one. Seriously- YFL is SO canon-compliant.

3.) I finally finished that frakking Kendra/Hoshi fic. Sheesh. It was NOT supposed to be another big bang. (It stopped 3k words short of it. Which is almost too bad, because art would have been awesome. But at the same time, there's few enough artists at big bang, I'm sure!) Thank you to [livejournal.com profile] geekbynight for some very helpful discussions about the ending!

Title: I Know Saint Peter Won't Call My Name
Author: [livejournal.com profile] lls_mutant
Wordcount: 12K
Rating: Adult
Pairing(s): Kendra Shaw/Louis Hoshi, off-screen Jack Fisk/Louis Hoshi
Prompt(s): Guilt week
Notes: Based on the drabble Addiction. Also, if you really want the backstory for the Hoshi/Fisk relationship, it's The Power In Hate.
Summary: The Pegasus has plenty of demons. Everyone needs some form of escape.

I Know Saint Peter Won't Call My Name

And yes, I do seem to be determined to use every lyric from Viva la Vida as a title. I'm seriously debating making that into a project. (I've got "That Was When I Ruled the World" and "Be My Mirror, My Sword, My Shield" done.)

3.5) Also, has anyone heard the song "This Is War" by 30 Seconds to Mars? This needs to be a vid.

4.) [livejournal.com profile] kappamaki33, I WILL get Sanctuary back to you today. I apologize about the long turnaround, but like I said, no big notes this time around. I LOVED it. I'll do it during naptime, as long as the kiddies cooperate.

5.) Had a very nice weekend, but boy, was it too short. Is there a reason my children are incapable of looking for things themselves or using napkins under their own power? But we had a barbecue with friends (the chips and dip won out), and I got to see Inception. AWESOME MOVIE. Can it be weekend again?

Okay. Grocery shopping and bathroom cleaning call! (Can we see why I'm SO excited about Monday? :P )
lls_mutant: (Default)
Gah. Bad mood today, but it should improve. I'm going to the movies. YAY! Going to see Inception.

Before I forget- Happy birthday [livejournal.com profile] trovia!!!!

Not reposting my 12C bookmarks because, hi, participation points (aka: I suck at graphics), but just want to say thank you, [livejournal.com profile] kappamaki33, because I used your prompt from another battle :)

Okay. I'm off.
lls_mutant: (Default)
We're having friends over for a barbeque tonight. The menu is ribs, corn on the cob, salad, and chocolate dipped ice cream sandwiches. I'm thinking I should have a munchie before. Which one sounds best to you?

Dear Kendra,

Fisk and Garner were right. You ARE a pain in the ass. This was supposed to be a short thing.

Love,

Dear Stepfather,

Please stop sending us grumpy email forwards about how much Obama sux, okay? I don't have a big problem with the President, my husband voted for him, and I'm really tired of hearing how one man is responsible for every problem this country faces, especially the oil spill. If you're so unhappy, write angry letters to your member of Congress rather than sending me insulting forwards. Sheesh.

Love,
Me

P.S. I also seem to remember getting a lecture about respecting and supporting the President when Bush was in office and I objected to the war. Yeah, remember that? Gah.

If you can't tell, my stepfather's been sending me lots of forwards again. I normally just delete them, but really, I find them both annoying and rude. Just like it would have been rude for me to spam him with anti-Bush emails a few years ago. Yes, there is a time and place for a dialogue, but a.) this is not a dialogue and b.) I have learned not to discuss politics with my stepfather EVER (which is why I just delete the forwards rather than asking him to stop). I value my sanity.

ANYWAY. Been working on Guilt Week, which I shouldn't do, but it's Guilt Week! Also been trying to finish up Chapter 4 of Agency, and reading the [livejournal.com profile] twelvecolonies ficlets with no little amusement.

A few memes:

If you could have me write a fic specifically for you, what would it be like? Fandom, characters/pairing, genre, plot elements, kinks... what's your ideal fic from me?

I probably won't write these, but I think this is an interesting question regardless. I especially find it interesting with people who don't write a fandom/pairing. I've answered this for two people so far, neither of whom write in my circle. One was for [livejournal.com profile] ani_bester, because she's one of the people who seems to like Tom as much as I do and I've never seen her write him (and she actually wrote a little ficlet!). The other was for [livejournal.com profile] musesfool because I always loved her how-they-got-together stories for R/S, and HTGT stories are thin on the ground for G/H. But yeah, interesting little meme when you really start thinking about it.

And That Harry Potter Meme :

16. How have you participated in the fandom over the years?

Reading, writing, fics, discussion... I did get to do one podcast about writing OCs, which was really, really fun. I've been out of the HP fandom mostly for a bit, but I still like reading peoples' posts.

17. Your favorite celebs from the movies or fandom

Oh, not a clue. I don't follow gossip much in general. So, JKR!!!

18. If you could change one thing about canon, what would it be?

Honestly, this might sound petty, but it's not- I'd probably change it so Remus/Sirius had been canon. I really liked that ship, I thought it said some lovely things about love and forgiveness and redemption, and I would have liked to see such complex, interesting characters in YA lit be involved in a same-sex relationship.

I think the fact that that's my first answer and it is something that's so petty and small speaks volumes (at least, I hope it does) for what I think about the work in general. Sure, there are flaws in the HP series, but for the most part I consider them minor and I truly loved the series as a whole. It truly is a wonderful series, and I can't wait until my boys are old enough that I can read it with them.
lls_mutant: (Default)
Why do I even read [livejournal.com profile] fanficrants? Seriously, people just spoiling for a fight tend to tick me off, and I'm really grumpy today. I mean, context matters. It matters a lot.

It's only supposed to be in the 80s this week. We could get outside! I need to find a day to take the kids to the creek. The problem is we keep getting these flash thunderstorms, and they swell the creek too much to take the kiddies the next morning. Like, today would be perfect, but with the flash storm we got yesterday.... Toby wants to go "exploring" at the park, too. Hmm. Maybe we can go after naps. The creek might be low enough by then.

Whose bright idea was it to make this Guilt Week? Seriously. I'm supposed to be working on my big bang. :P

That Harry Potter meme again:

Question 15: Whatever Tickles Your Fancy

More oldies but goodies!!!! Much more gen this time around.

An Undying Passion for Cupcakes by [livejournal.com profile] ignipes. the trio, Sirius/Remus, alcohol, and someone's undying passion for cupcakes. AU

What You Want by [livejournal.com profile] wildestranger. Lily Evans contemplates the wizarding world and her place in it.

Bar Maid (Or Five Lives Rosmerta Never Changed) by [livejournal.com profile] snegurochka_lee. Five conversations at a bar. Five women who didn't take the bar maid's advice. Five lives Rosmerta never changed.

Twenty Sibling Drabbles by [livejournal.com profile] snorkackcatcher. Twenty unrelated drabbles about people related by their parentage.

That Harry Potter Meme:

12. Favorite movie scene

Hmmm. This one is kind of tough, because while I've really adored the books, I haven't been that into the movies. I did really like actually seeing Quidditch for the first time. That was cool. I mean, I pictured it really clearly from the books, but it was still neat to see it. Same with Diagon Alley.

13. Least favorite character(s)

Grawp would have to be my number one. I hate Grawp, who adds nothing to the story and should have been edited out. Seriously. :P Grawp was like a Mary Sue in a way- when he was around, the narrative became all about him, and I didn't like him at all. :P

I have characters I hate, but I love to hate them. Like Umbridge and Draco. I mean, I don't like them as people, but I think JKR did an excellent job of evoking the exact reaction that she wanted. The Carrows are kind of lame villains, reminding me a lot of the witch or whatever she was in The Sword in the Stone. Mim, that was her name. Tell me she's not the Carrow chick. Voldemort... had his moments. But he really was just a little too evil overlord for my tastes as a villain.

I was also not a huge fan of Dumbledore. In the first five books, he kind of amused me or bored me. But I got really frustrated by the end that he just wouldn't tell Harry things, and that he was so manipulative. I don't think Dumbledore was evil, but I don't think he was a particularly good person, either. I think he did have the good of humanity in mind, but he reminds me of an exchange from BSG:

Zarek: It's amazing the things you start to notice when you're on the sidelines. How every decision that Laura and your father make gets stamped "CLASSIFIED." Or how her directives are starting to read like decrees, yet still get enacted without so much as a debate. You know, she won't even allow records to be kept of any of her meetings. Secrecy and control are becoming obsessions for her. I think this Demetrius business is just the tip of the iceberg.

Apollo: Well, sometimes a benevolent tyrant's exactly what you need.

Zarek: No. A tyrant craves power for its own sake. And all Laura wants is to save us all. Trust me. Better yet, trust yourself. Because that's what I'm really counting on, that you're not the kind of man who can ignore the truth when it stares you in the face.

14. Moments in the books/movies that made you cry

1.) The Forest
2.) Harry's Breakdown after Sirius's Death
3.) Neville's Parents- that one actually hit me the hardest
4.) Dobby's funeral
5.) Fred
lls_mutant: (Default)
Okay, f-list- talk to me about Playa Palacios vs. James McManus vs. Sekou Hamilton.

Here's the deal: I need a reporter for Agency, someone Tom Zarek can think he can trust. (Well, that he'll take the risk on trusting them.) So, naturally, he's going to turn to someone who's been fairly anti-Adama and Roslin. However, their wiki pages are pretty scant.

In Colonial Day, Playa is very pro-Roslin, James is very anti-Roslin. However, this is season 1, and Agency takes place in season 4.5.

I seem to remember spotting Playa in the administration of New Caprica. Is she the blond in the back row? I could certainly see Baltar making her his press secretary. That would be easy to tie her and Tom together.

Sekou makes a few pointed comments in A Disquiet Follows My Soul, but the script isn't online anywhere and I can't remember if Playa does.

Other things to consider: it's a very gray role. Without saying too much, there are no truly good guys in this fic, and no truly bad ones either, but this role heads a little grayer, and I get paranoid about this sort of thing. This character ends up doing some screwing over of their own, but I can understand why.

So, James McManus, Playa Palacios, or Sekou Hamilton? Who would Tom Zarek take a chance on not to hand his ass back to Laura Roslin?
lls_mutant: (Default)
You know what would be an entertaining crossover that I don't know that anyone but me would read? Harry Dresden and Donald Strachey team up to solve a mystery. What Harry would be doing in Albany is beyond me, so Donald would have to come to Chicago, because I can fathom why people would voluntarily go there. (I grew up in Albany.) Plus, Timmy and Bob hanging out would be incredibly snarky fun. Especially TV!Bob. (I haven't gotten far enough into the books to see if there are huge differences between TV!Bob and book!Bob, aside from the form. But movie!Timmy and TV!Bob would have a lot of fun together.)

So bored today. Although if this cloudiness keeps up, I can actually take the kids to a park and they won't burn themselves on the slides.

Still not running, but the PT says soon. I can't wait. I'm doing the elliptical in the meantime, but I really want to get back to running. I was supposed to start ramping my mileage up this week, with the long run being six miles. I am wondering if I will be able to run the whole marathon, or if I'll have to consider intervals. It depends on my feet.

And That Harry Potter Meme:

10. Favorite book moment(s)

10 Favorite HP Moments (in no particular order.)

1.) Hagrid tells Harry he's a wizard.
2.) "It unscrews the other way"
3.) The Shrieking Shack scene
4.) The Forest walk
5.) The first time we see the Burrow
6.) Cedric takes the cup with Harry
7.) The Yule Ball
8.) The Quidditch World Cup
9.) Harry returns to Godric's Hollow
10.) Luna does the commentary for the Quidditch match

11. Character you're crushing on

What? I don't turn Narcho into Sirius Black. No, not at all.... ::hides his motorcycle::
lls_mutant: (Default)
So, I've been bored, and I know a lot of you all are, too. So I've been compiling a BSG rec list.

These fics are all secondary character-centric. It's not a gen list, but all the fics have plot or character study or whatever. It's far from exhaustive, and I think I'll keep it as a WIP. (Racetrack, for example, is missing from this. That's just not right.)

It's also notably short on Gaeta. This isn't because I dislike the fics (obviously), but because most of you reading to start are going to be Gaeta readers. If I've read it, you've read it. Also, the Gaeta fandom has a LOT of quality, so it really comes down to taste. If you're interested in Gaeta recs from the stuff I read, let me know, and I can point you in the direction of good stuff.

All fics on this list are finished. However, I don't know that I moved over any warnings. So, if you have issues with that kind of thing, check the story warnings before you read.

Enjoy the Fic! )
lls_mutant: (Default)
Warrior Dash. I SO want to do this.

The Harry Potter meme:

08. Your favorite ship(s)

I am very, very boring. I love Remus/Sirius, and I always will. There's something about love conquering huge obstacles + redemption + deep friendship + one good thing in a miserable life that equals OTP for me. But aside from them, I actually like most of the canon pairings. I like Ron/Hermione and Harry/Ginny (although I thought Harry/Cho was better written. JKR does better spoofing romance than writing it). I love Molly/Arthur. I grew to like Bill/Fleur a lot in Book 6. I'm not much into non-canon ships, although I always kind of liked the idea of Charlie Weasley/Tonks.

09. Fanfiction: discuss

Fanfiction is a good thing. It's a fun diversion and I love to read it and write it, and I think it's a great playground. I don't even consider it practice- it's the story that's in my head and the one I want to tell, so I write it. I'm really coherent tonight.

So, in lieu of that, five of my favorite HP fics:

Twenty Six Days by [livejournal.com profile] aome. In his search for a job, Remus stumbles into something else entirely. A beautiful Lost Years fic that [livejournal.com profile] aome wrote for me.

No Romance by [livejournal.com profile] thistlerose. This is not a love story.. Not either of our usual interpretations of the pairing, but it's such a tight, beautiful fic.

Mischief Managed by [livejournal.com profile] krabapple. Everyone deserves a little happiness, even Sirius Black and Remus Lupin. I'm always such a sucker for AUs :)

Teenage Kicks by [livejournal.com profile] shaggydogstail. Sirius starts to grow up, dyes his hair, and falls in love with a rock star. Amazing coming of age, defining identity fic.

Rise From the Ashes by [livejournal.com profile] midnitemaraud_r. Muggles have an old saying: "Be careful what you wish for, you might just get it." Teddy never quite grasped the meaning, until he made a wish of his own. This is gorgeous- I never thought I'd go for Teddy/Cedric, but this truly worked.

the other days )

ARGH! I'm looking for a Dollhouse episode- "Instinct" to be specific. (Yes, I know it was probably one of the weakest episodes of the whole thing, but there is something in there that REALLY affects the plot of my fic.) We don't have Season 2, and the video appears to be unavailable on Hulu. Anyone have any ideas where I can watch it- especially the first half- for free? Pretty please?
lls_mutant: (Default)
Pulled out my charcoals for the first time in years. I did the first sketch for [livejournal.com profile] kappamaki33's story, which is a bit of a cheat because it involves two OCs. It's not coming out exactly how I pictured it reading the fic- the hammock is cloth now, although I'd envisioned it as rope, and I didn't get the angle right. And something's not quite right with Jordan. But I love how Amelia's coming out. (Ooh! It was the size of Jordan's head that was off. And I know his hands are the wrong size, too. But I'm really, really, really happy with Amelia. (And this paragraph probably only makes the most sense to me and Kappa, but still.)

However, I most definitely need to hit an art store and get a new charcoal eraser. I think we'll do that before the grocery store.

The big thing now with this drawing is that it needs a background. Kappa- suggestions? :)

I've almost got that frakking Starbuck-Hoshi scene done for Agency, at least the rough. Yay. I don't know why this scene is giving me such a hard time. This chapter is, really. I think I'm going to have to come back later and really smooth this one out. It's a very set-up oriented chapter.

I am also aware that I have 7.5 chapters to go, and rough drafts are due in, like a month. No, less. A lot less. Shit. Guess I know what I'm doing tonight.

However, right now I should be shutting down and getting people up and running errands. I was going to do the HP meme, but the question today is what drink do you associate with HP, and the answer is I don't.
lls_mutant: (Default)
Bored.

Working on Agency while the kids watch Planet Earth, and I just seem to have hit a real blocked point. It's a Starbuck-Hoshi scene, and... I don't know.

More Agency babble. )

I think I'm going to take the kids out to dinner tonight. Toby's rooting for pizza of some sort, I was kind of hoping to go to Applebee's. Normally, I'm not a huge Applebee's fan, but they have a salad I really could have gone for tonight. I'm not sure what else I am going with them tonight. They haven't been outside all day- it's been so hot and humid. Maybe I'll put their suits on them and turn the sprinklers on.

That Harry Potter Meme:

05. Wizard Rock: discuss

I have no real feelings about Wizard Rock. Lots of people are into it, but I'm not. Just never did get into it, and I see no problem with any position on it.

06. Your favorite character(s)

Ahhh. Much more interesting.

I've said before that my ficcing tendencies do not always reflect my favorite character in canon. When I fic- and when I read fic- I tend towards either a.) characters whose stories didn't get told fully in the canon, or b.) what-if AUs, in which I'm perfectly happy to have whoever. And while yes, I love the MWPP crew, they aren't my favorite. Ron is.

I love Harry. Harry is fantastic and relateable and although he escapes the consequences of his later actions, he's a pretty realistic good kid. I really, really like him. I like Hermione, too, with her intelligence and her earnestness and her determination to do the right thing. But Ron... I adore Ron.

Ron is funny. Ron is smart, although he doesn't always realize it. Ron might not be the most sensitive guy (<--- understatement), but we aren't meant to think that he is, either. He's loyal and he's really a good guy, and I would love it if my sons turned out like Ron. No, he's not perfect, but his flaws are forgivable. :)

So, yeah. Ron Weasley is my favorite character, although really? I like them all :)
