Lee Adama and Souls

Quick question- would Lee Adama believe in a soul? Does he ever mention them? My impression is that Lee's more on the agnostic/atheist side of things, but nowhere near as devoutly as Billy. We're talking season 4.5, in between mutiny and Deadlocked here.

He's never mentioned souls iirc, and according to the actor he's an atheist. But there's no statement in canon one way or another.

I'd probably be surprised to read a fic where Lee was portrayed as religious.

Not religious, per se. But I think a lot of people who aren't religious still believe in souls, if that makes sense. I'm not sure. It's a hard one to separate the two.

Yeah, that does make sense. I think you could possibly get away with him being interested in some of the philosophy (he read it in college) or something like that. He might be interested in the mind and perhaps even accept that there are some things that can't be explained by science. There are lots of ways you could go with it, depending on what you need it for.

I think it depends on the context. I can't see Lee as religious, per se, but "souls" is an easy shorthand for individual consciousnesses, too. I could see Lee buying that humans--and maybe Cylons--each have an individual consciousness that, though maybe created by the firing of neurons, is separable from the body in which it was first created. Especially in the BSG 'verse with Cylon resurrection, a person would almost *need* some kind of word to deal with that concept, even if they didn't believe in an indestructible soul in the traditional sense. I have no idea if that helps or not. Good luck!

I see the concept of souls as being very basic and not tied to religion. Thinking you know what happens to them, that they were created with specific intent by a deity is religion. I've met atheist who don't discount the existence something that can only be described as a soul. Given Laura's and others use of the word souls through out the series. I think it's a fundamental cultural concept through out the twelve colonies.

I don't think he's an, 'it all goes black and there is nothing' guy. He's so concerned about doing what is right as opposed to necessary and needed. Not that you can't be ethical and not believe in a soul. But much motivation for people doing what is 'right' tends to stem from the idea that there is a soul which gives us value beyond our actions and faults. He seems to have this in spades. Thus I would always have him believing we are more than the sum of our parts which is a basic definition of 'soul' to me.
