Three key pairings in my own personal canon:
Remus Lupin/Sirius Black. Duh :) Remus and Sirius are the reasons I started writing fanfic. Their story intrigues me. I didn't start shipping them until OotP- I saw nothing in PoA that convinced me that they were together. It was the way they treated each other- and were always together- in OotP that really just made me say, "hey, wait!" I have to admit I love the pairing partly because of the dramatic history of their relationship, and partly because back when I thought it was canon, I thought it was really neat that someone had written a gay pairing where the focus was not that they were homosexual.
Peter Pettigrew/Tina Lovegood. Tina is kind of key to Peter's demise in Accidentally In Love, but it's important to note that Peter made all his decisions himself. "Key" is, in a way, the right word. Tina was the exposure. She was what introduced Peter to the Death Eaters. But if Peter hadn't been Peter, he would have dropped her or something long before that. Tina is meant to be an absolutely ideal catch on the surface, and at first, Peter couldn't believe his luck. He still can't.
James Potter/Lily Evan. Because, really, aren't they key to the whole series? :) I adore James and Lily.
Three OCs in my canon
1.) Damien Lupin. Damien is one of my all-time favorite OCs. Crusty, angry at the world, and utterly lacking in social graces, but a good heart and fiercely protective of people he loves, especially Remus. Despite his father's less-than-demonstrative exterior, Remus knows very well that his father loves him. They can't always (often, rarely) relate to each other because they are such different people, but the love is there.
Just for the record, Damien is still alive, as I thought he was "the lion man" that turned out to be Scrimgeour.
2.) Alex Sommers. Alex is my second favorite. He was Remus's first boyfriend, and came on way too strong at the beginning. Because he was a potential rapist? Because he was a potential Death Eater? No. He came on strong because he was a seventeen year old boy still figuring out his relationships and how to cope with his sex drive. After he and Remus parted ways, Alex realized (over time) that he'd been a complete jerk. He didn't plan to think about it any more until they met again at St. Mungo's.
Alex is destined to meet a rather bitter end, I'm afraid. I'm one of those that does believe Wizards can contract Muggle diseases (remember the colds in CoS?), and I'd like to think that if they came up with cures for some of the nasty ones they'd somehow manage to share them with the Muggle world. Alex died during the Lost Years. One day I'll write that.
3.) Stern. Stern still needs a first name, but he's the werewolf that was helping Lichtenstein and betrayed Sirius and Damien back in Chapter 5 of Accidentally In Love. He's working for Voldemort because he wants his rights as a human, not his rights as a werewolf. He's not happy about the arrangement, but he's not happy with any of his options. He's an older man (probably in his seventies) and has a second wife (his first divorced him after the bite), and is quite dignified.
Three plot points that are integral to my canon
1.) Remus was a spy for the Order. This is a biggie, since it leads to a lot of why he was deemed the traitor. Also, please note that thanks to Imperius and Legilmens, it's not necessary for Sirius and James and Lily to believe that Remus wants to betray them.
2.) Peter turned Death Eater partly to protect his family. Or so he says- at least to himself. One of the things I'm not as crazy about with AIL is Peter's characterization. I think it's not too late, but man, Let the Water Hold You Down Peter blows AIL Peter out of the water. :P
3.) Damien Lupin has used the Unforgivables, and will again. (After they've been authorized, naturally.) This is vitally important in Sirius's arc, because Sirius can't handle this.
Three concepts that are integral to my canon
1.) Remus was largely responsible for the others believing he was the traitor. This is vital, and it goes back to the fact that Remus likes to keep his secrets. Some he kept with good reason- heck, most he kept with good reason- but it worked against him. Point one and a half is that Remus knew this. That's why he wasn't shocked in PoA when he realized Sirius thought he was the traitor, and that's why he didn't hold a grudge. It made sense.
2.) Sirius, although technically brilliant, made a pretty crappy Auror. Sirius was far too ruled by emotion and impulsive to make a good Auror. He also thought in black and white too much- he needed more subtlety. He did much better when he was paired with Frank Longbottom or Moody. (Pairing him with Damien was not Doge's best idea ever.)
3.) Heroes don't have to be nice people all the time.
One of the bestest things ever that JKR did was make Regulus so fucking cool. And I'm so glad I started writing him the way I did before I knew that, because I love my version of Regulus. I love that he is flat out mean to Remus, he's bigoted in many ways, he's rough edged, and he can be positively nasty to people he doesn't like, but he's a history geek and takes care of his mentally incapacitated father (and resents that Sirius left him alone with that burden). But Regulus ended up having more guts than I ever gave him credit for, and it's so interesting. Same thing with most characters. (And there's a part of fandom I really wish would take this to heart.) People come in all shades of gray, and that's one of the base concepts for AIL. Did Voldie tear the Marauders apart? Well, yes... but they sure had a hand in it, too.

Date: 2007-01-25 04:58 pm (UTC)I agree about heroes. And a lot of time they don't even set out to be heroes, it just happens that their personal code aligns with someone elses for a bit. Long enough to be of help. Fanon Reg tends to annoy me because he's either a whiny brat or a someone who cuts himself to feel pain (oh, the teen angst!). I tend to think like you that he was incredibly cool, and a scared little boy at the bottom of it all, just like the rest of him. Plus I love him. :p But then, Peter is kind of close to my heart too.
There's something about the bad ones. ;)

It is one of the things I think JKR has constructed well (to date) in this universe - bad and terrible things happen but they aren't random acts put upon people. The characters, and the wizarding world as a whole, very much have a hand in what has happened both in their own lives and in their society.

Date: 2007-01-25 05:10 pm (UTC)Alex and Damien are very vivid characters--they're among the few fanfic OCs I remember clearly and could talk about at a dinner party. The love shines through.

This is part of my canon, as well. It makes so much sense! *smile* JKR should stop by and read our journals.
This is making me very impatient for the end of AIL. How many chapters are left?
So glad you did this! Hope you don't mind if I link to it? Maggie

Date: 2007-01-26 03:33 am (UTC)And yeah, I am loving the Blacks. Regulus just really surprised me- that letter was the ultimate "fuck you". Amazing how he's dead and can be such an utterly fascinating character!

Date: 2007-01-26 03:40 am (UTC)You know, I'm not sure how many chapters of AIL are left. I know I'm up to end of July, 1980 right now. I know how the story goes. I'm just never sure how many chapters there are going to be, y'know? I didn't think certain things would be so drawn out, and others take up much less space. So, we'll see!
