Hey there, and welcome to my Journal. As stated in the User Info, I do a lot of fanfic writing in this journal, and this is my official archive post. With the general warnings debacle, I figured I ought to mention: I warn for all the biggies (when I write them), like rape and torture and eating disorders (I don't think I write the others), but I do not explicitly warn for character death, especially for canon deaths (and given that most of the characters I write about died canon deaths, I'd hope it wouldn't shock you.) However, I usually (usually) give you a pretty good idea of the mood of the story. The other thing I don't warn for, but sometimes wonder if I should, is miscarriages. I never write them graphically, but I do write them.

Cross posting testing... all is successful, yes? (I am lls_mutant at dw and lj. Feel free to add me.)

Dear LJ,

Yes, it's not that hard to figure out I'm me on LJ. Yes, I use the same pics for my avatar here and on Facebook. But here's the thing: I like keeping Facebook and LiveJournal separate. Honestly- why is this such an insane concept anymore? LiveJournal is my geek playground. Facebook is my RL stuff. Please get rid of this feature NOW.

No love,

(I will get around to patching in the grease monkey code. I probably won't bother to move to DW, unless it seems like the BSG fandom is making a mass exodus, simply because I'm lazy. However, I'll join the chorus of saying I'd rather not find myself being linked to on Facebook or Twitter, with the exception of fic comments, because hey- yes, I like having my fics read :) I lock what I want locked, so if you're on my flist, please use your head if I've got something locked. Although my guess is the people on your Facebook or Twitter account won't really care about reading your comments to me on one of my locked posts ;) )

I think my biggest objection to this move is not the lack of privacy- I mean, this is the internet, after all. But it's the implication that everyone needs to know our every move. This is why I have held out on having a cell phone (well, a "real" one. Right now I've got a very minimal plan). There are a few people who need to know where I am at certain times; my boys' teachers, babysitters, maybe my husband. And I'm not going to deny there are benefits. But really- why does someone have to get in touch with me THAT MINUTE for some trivial reason when I'm in the middle of whatever I'm doing? I will call when I am done, thanks.

But I am not important enough- or interesting enough- that people need to know every detail of my life. I don't have much of a crossover between FB and LJ because frankly, most of the people on FB aren't interested in what I have to say here. Well, maybe when I post in detail about my kids, some of them might be.

Now, granted, I'm not everyone. This is also where I write my fanfic, and yeah, that's not something I advertise that I write. (Although if more people understood why, I would. But to be fair, I get the same sort of looks when I talk about writing sci-fi in general.) But I'm not so much embarrassed by it (well, maybe a little) as I am thinking that most of my circle has no interest whatsoever in reading it. So why bore them with it? I like having separate worlds. And I can understand why other people don't. But I just really resent this pressure- societal, corporate, whatever- to put EVERYTHING on line and linked to, so everyone knows what you're doing every minute of the day. If people want to, great, but if they don't, that should be easy enough, too.

I'm sounding like my old boss, who reminded me of Calvin's dad in terms of technology. Next thing you know, I'll be saying we should go back to a hammer and chisel.

Ah, well. Mom's reading, so maybe I can get a little writing done.

YES!!!!!!! The rough draft of Agency is FINISHED!!!!!

It still needs some major edits. In fact, I've got a list of scenes I need to write, and I know I have a few placeholders. Plus, when I was doing a lot of the final scenes, I was like "hmmm. I think that plotline needs some strengthening." Especially where Victor and Sierra are concerned. They're really tough, because I didn't use their POV at all. PLUS, there's all the edits from my beta.

BUT. I AM DONE THE ROUGH DRAFT! This is especially good because my mom should be here in three hours, and I don't know what kind of time I have between now and when she leaves on the sixth. I'm really looking forward to her visit- it's gonna be a good one- but I don't anticipate getting much computer time. Which is good. I need to take a break from Agency, and then look at it again with fresh eyes.

I still owe a few ficlets- hopefully I'll get them written soon.

Anyway, I should get cleaning. Although- [livejournal.com profile] amyxaphania- let me know if you want the full copy of the rough (seriously rough- see what I said about "wow, I need to add a few scenes here and there) draft.

Okay, off to cleaning. Yay.

Yesterday was GORGEOUS. Crystal blue sky, high seventies low eighties, no humidity.... Ran 7 miles and felt fantastic. I did have to walk, more because I'm trying to keep my feet from rebelling. We'll see how that all goes.

However, there is one downside. The sports bra I had on rubbed a raw red line across my solar plexus. It looks awful, and it hurts like hell. It's in perfect parallel with my C-section scar, so that looks entertaining. And my husband is thinking he's hysterical by saying it's a slasher scar.

Got another 3 miles today, and then again tomorrow. Then my mom comes- yay! I'm really looking forward to her visit, as are the boys. Well, Toby. He's old enough to remember Grandma from visit to visit. But Trev will be excited once she gets here.

[livejournal.com profile] aome and her girls visited on Friday, which was really, really nice. The kids all got along well, given the age difference, and we took them to the swingset place. It was a really nice visit, and the first time I'd seen [livejournal.com profile] aome's girls in a little while. They're getting so big! (Like my boys aren't.)

Why can I not get Ageny to move today? I am SO close to the end.... ::sigh:: Guess I should keep trying until hubby gets home and it's my turn to run.

Gah. Ever have one of those days that should be good but things just go wrong? Went over to friends' houses this morning, and as we were making our way back (after arguing with Toby if he was going to ride his bike or not), hubby stopped as he drove out of the development. "You have your keys, right?" he asked.

"Yup," I said, jangling my keychain.

About 100 yards from home, Trevor tripped and skinned his knee. Great. So he's howling, Toby wants off his bike, Toby is soaked from playing with a hose with his buddies, and it's getting really hot. I pull out my keys... only to discover that I'd left the house key tied to my shoes when I went running last night.

In a word, shit.

Went next door to the neighbor's and ring the bell, because the Mister's car is in the driveway. Either he doesn't hear me or thinks I'm a salesman or whatever, but I figure I'll go to the other side. Try two more neighbors, no one is home. Go back to the original, because I know they have a copy of our key after I locked myself out of the house five months pregnant wearing only robe and relying on my forgotten Chinese to get back in. However, the Mister doesn't even know we have a key, and can't find it. All does end well- I called hubby and he hadn't gotten too far as he was eating lunch at the local Wegman's (where, amusingly enough, he ran into the Missus from next door), and he came home and let us in. But this entire time Trevor his howling because his knee hurts and won't let me put him down and Toby is asking question after question and my back is KILLING me and my head is killing me.... AND I made the mistake of mentioning going out for lunch, so Trevor is dying to go to McDonald's. (I swear- that kid and McDonald's....)

So this afternoon, after the kids finish naps/upstairs time, we make cupcakes. Usually, this is a fun activity. But it's getting less fun now that they're old enough to fight over whose turn it is. And they keep asking me if they can lick the beaters yet. I finally DO give them the beaters... and it's ever so much fun because Trevor is in that stage where he can't bear to get anything on his hands. One drop and it's "SPILL! SPILL! SPILL!!! NAPKIN!! NAPKIN!! NAPKIN!!" Grow out of this already, please. (Also, kiddo, if you don't like the feeling of hair in your mouth, maybe you shouldn't put your snow leopard's tail in there, huh??? I'm just saying....)

Anyway, the cupcakes should be good. I really like this recipe. It is the one cupcake recipe I've ever made where I truly think that it does not require frosting. This makes it ideal for two reasons: 1.) it's a quick dessert, and 2.) the kids are not allowed to bring anything with frosting as a snack for preschool. (The logic is 2 teachers + 18 kids + frosting = a bigger mess than they feel like cleaning up. I understand this logic.) But I am a frosting LOVER, and I made these once with frosting, and we all thought they tasted better without. They really do taste a lot like chocolate chip cookies, but with a lighter texture. (They aren't quite cupcake texture, though. They're neat.)

So, Chocolate Chunk Cookie Cupcakes )
lls_mutant: (Default)
Wow, it is a GORGEOUS morning out! Not a cloud in the sky, and not too hot. We are so playing outside today. (Just not in our own yard, as hubby needs to mow.) And I pulled 13 ripe tomatoes out of the garden yesterday. I foresee tomato-mozzarella salad.

[livejournal.com profile] bsg_bigbang gave an extension!!! September 20! Whoohoo! On the one hand, I still am at the point where I just want to finish this fic. I want it DONE. But on the other hand, it makes beta turn around easier, and it means I can take my time on the details. Which is good, because I know there are some small scenes I need to put in and some rewrites and all that. Plus, my mom comes in a few days and leaves on September 6, and I really don't know how much I'll get accomplished when she's here. PLUS, that gives [livejournal.com profile] kappamaki33 more time to finish both of her fics and me time to finish the art for her second one. I'm still a little nervous about starting this second picture and posting them at all, because my art isn't horrid but it's not like some of the people's I've seen where my mouth drops open at their talent, but oh well.

However, speaking of big bangs, Narcho... a word? I know you've got someone else in your body right now. That someone else is NOT Jayne Cobb. Just because this is a Joss Whedon invention in space does not mean we pick a Joss Whedon character from space and put him in your body. That's NOT how this works! Okay, okay, yeah, it IS really funny, but the problem is this scene is NOT supposed to be funny, okay? If you MUST be Jayne, do it subtly, like Racetrack. (Don't think I don't know you're not being Zoe over there.)

Futurama is on tonight, and it sounds like a good one. And Katee Sackhoff is voicing. I was going to watch anyway, but after reading the episode synopsis, I'm really looking forward to it. I haven't been turning cartwheels over the new episodes, but they've been good enough to watch. We've also been working slowly through Farscape. We're still in Season 1, but I can tell you that hubby's stopped mocking it :) Aeryn Sun is still my absolute favorite and the incredibly best part of the show and I'm not sure that's EVER going to change (as long as she doesn't pull an Adama :P ), but D'Argo and Rigel are fast growing on me. I'm still lukewarm on Zhaan and we just added Chiana, whose mannerisms annoy me, but hopefully they'll both grow on me even more. But D'Argo has the whole forbidden love plotline (um, yeah, major kink for me) and Rigel is just that great mix of repulsive and can be noble... ::considers a crossover where Tom Zarek and Rigel meet.::

One thing that does make me sad is it looks like BSG has been removed from [livejournal.com profile] crack_van's regular fandom list. :P Oh well.

On a more cheerful note, one of the [livejournal.com profile] twelvecolonies challenges involved making picspams with a brain twin. The idea is you both do a picspam on the same topic without comparing and then post them. [livejournal.com profile] whatever_lj and I did Battlestar Galactica takes the Bechdel Test. Hers is here and mine is here. What I think is really fascinating is that there were a couple of times we picked the same scene and we had different opinions on whether it passed or failed. We also managed to pick some very different scenes as well, sometimes even in the same episode. This was a really, really fun challenge, and I think it's one of the best graphics challenges that [livejournal.com profile] twelvecolonies has had.

This concludes this bout of utter and complete geekiness for the day. Now to get some boys up and start thinking about playing outside!

Hey all-

I've got a great beta for Agency, but she went and got one of those real life... things that I hear so much about. So, would anyone be up for betaing? Here's the stats:

-I'm almost done- I could send you what I have. I currently have six more "scenes" (the one might get divided into more than one scene) on my outline, plus the epilogue. This will hopefully change before I go to bed tonight. However, the scene I am in the middle of- an action scene- will be the most desperately in need of a beta, as I tend to be weak on setting. I am hoping to have the entire thing done by Tuesday, as my mom comes then :)

-It is a Dollhouse/BSG crossover, but the only four characters crossing over from Dollhouse are Adelle, Topher, Victor and Sierra, and Victor and Sierra are in Active form. So, characterization-wise, it's really only Adelle and Topher (although Victor and Sierra need work.)

-I have not put in any of the changes my beta has thus far suggested, although I fully intend to, so it's in it's rough form.

-BSG characters featured:
POV characters: Laura, Bill, Tom, Kara, Helo, Sharon, 1 or 2 scenes from Saul
Non POV characters that stay in character: Lee, Hoshi, Playa, Skulls, and minor appearances from various other characters
Characters that become Actives (thus do not stay in character): Gaeta, Narcho, and Racetrack

-Pairings: very, very background. All canon. Laura/Bill, Helo/Athena, Kara/Sam (ish), Gaeta/Hoshi, past Hoshi/OMC. No one has sex as an Active.

-Warnings, not really. Talk of death of children, set in the past. People are mind-wiped, but really, compared to some of the stuff I've written, this is very tame.

-The fic is currently at 65K words- I anticipate it will be about 70-75K when I'm done. It's currently 134 pages at 10 point TNR font.

-I need to hand it in by September 6 - the faster the better.

If anyone's up for it, please let me know! Thanks so much!
lls_mutant: (Default)

So, I'm writing this fight scene with Kara and Hoshi on the same side (yeah, I know, tell me about it), and this one line occurs to me. And when I look it up, I crack up, because it turns out it IS a Joss Whedon line.

Hey, I make my own fun.

So, speaking of fun! Let's bring out the good old movie quotes meme! That's always a blast, and although I can't promise a ficlet to whoever guesses the most, let's face it- it's fun to guess.

I am hitting that point where I will be so glad to be done with Agency. (OMG, Toby's up already?) I'm at 53K words, and I'm guessing it will go to somewhere between 60-65. That's half the size I wrote last year, which is kind of nice. But since they still haven't posted the reveal list of authors that they kept saying, I wanted to email my author on my own. I mean, they need time, too, right? Even if art doesn't take that long (I have no idea how long the good stuff takes), it might take time to fit it in. Especially right now. I have no idea if my artist is a student, but if she is, that could play havoc. So yeah, I figured the earlier she gets it, the better, right? So I outlined what's left down to each scene and sent it.

I have 15 scenes to go. Yikes.

Well, not yikes, I guess. That's about a scene a day, right? Maybe a little more, because I need time for the beta. (My mom comes August 31. I'm anticipating I won't write much when she's here.) But with the writing, the betaing, and I really want to try to get the art done for [livejournal.com profile] kappamaki33's second big bang... Yikes. :)

One thing I have noticed- I really like Agency. I'm happy with how it's coming out. I do notice I don't like it quite as much as The Space Between Us. TSBU is without a doubt my favorite long fic I've written. This is one of those things that you know will happen- hell, it happens with short fic all the time. I still think my best short fic is The Touch of Your Grace, and I wrote that a year and a half ago. I think I'm just noticing this one more because of the length of the fics.

Hope everyone else is coming along! I suppose I'd better get back to writing instead of babbling. 15 more scenes.... almost there!
lls_mutant: (Default)
Quick question- would Lee Adama believe in a soul? Does he ever mention them? My impression is that Lee's more on the agnostic/atheist side of things, but nowhere near as devoutly as Billy. We're talking season 4.5, in between mutiny and Deadlocked here.

lls_mutant: (Default)
Argh. Very bored today. We're just finishing up Toby's episode of Exodus Earth. Poor Tobe doesn't feel good- I think he's got a cold. And Trev and I are just bored.

It's hubby's birthday, but that doesn't do much for us today, as he's stuck on a business trip. Lucky him. We celebrated his birthday with dinner for him and me, and then a few fun gifts. Toby gave him lightsaber chopsticks. He was delighted with himself. :) He also wrote "I love you Daddy" all by himself, which pleased him to no end.

We were going to have ham and mac n cheese tonight, but I think we're going to have a raid the freezer night instead- let Toby have whatever he'll eat, Trevor can have chicken nuggets and corn, and I'll have leftover baked potato soup. What an inspiring menu, huh? although I need to pick the tomatoes in my garden.

Been working on my big bang- almost done chapter 6 out of 10 (I think. We'll see). Yay! I really want to get up to chapter 8 done by the end of the weekend. Is there going to be a post telling us to send our roughs to the artists? I'm looking forward to seeing what my artist will come up with. I've checked out her page, and I really hope she's not too disappointed with my fic. She's a huge Whedon fan. My fic is a cross-over, but it's really the technology that crosses over. Adelle and Topher appear mainly in their business roles, and Victor and Sierra.... I'm afraid people are going to be disappointed with how little they're on the screen. I intended to have more going on with them, but there's so much going on already, and frankly, the story is how BSG would use the technology. Victor and Sierra don't really much matter, because the focus is on some of the ethical implications. Since Roslin is NOT making fancy prostitutes, the ethical implications here really are tough, and I'm really not convinced that she's 100% wrong in all cases. But really, the main characters are very, very much the BSG crew. I can't even pick out a main character this time, or a main pairing.

I'm definitely getting to the point where I want this fic done, though. I have a few other projects, but I really want to start devoting more time to Adamaey Rising. I've been doing research and outlining for it, and I'm excited about it, but I think I need to really pick it up. Also, there's the Never Spoken challenge, which will start in September, and the remixduello, which I'm really excited about.

Speaking of the Never Spoken challenge, is there anyone who would be up to making a banner for it? Nothing fancy, even, but my graphics are... erm, less-than-impressive :) (Although I still love my cookie banner.)

Okay. Pick tomatoes then make dinner. Yay, what an exciting night. What an exciting post :P
lls_mutant: (Default)
Wee! Fic exchange reveals! I totally did not guess my author: [livejournal.com profile] trovia wrote "Keeping Count", which was an awesome Dee/Narcho fic.

My fic was probably pretty predictable, although at least I refrained from hooking up Narcho and Hoshi (visibly. Yes, they were totally together in my head.) The fic was meant to be even longer, going up through the NC rescue, but I came to a good stopping point and a deadline. Maybe after Agency, I'll write the Part 2 of this, although I've finally realized the reason that Hoshi's bugging me is he wants more of "The Struggles Make You Stronger", particularly the parts with Narcho.

Mentally hungry and very tired. Was going to write, but we'll see. A nap may take me instead.

I've been given the go-ahead to do some running, but I'm supposed to ramp the mileage up slowly. I'm allowed to do 3 mile runs this weekend. However, my training schedule dictated a nine mile run.

I run 12 minute miles. So, 12 minutes times nine miles equals one hour and forty eight minutes. So, I did 2 hours on the elliptical.

That is all.

Gray day today. Is it bad I'm almost hoping for rain? I guess we need to get a birthday present today, and hit the post office. It would be a good school shopping day, but I think think it's going to be a while before we're ready for long pants and sleeves, and I don't trust Toby not to grow again before we need them.

As far as the never-spoke-in-canon challenge goes (I need a better name), overwhelming response (at least from my f-list) is that we should wait until after Big Bang. Since we're also into August and lots of people settling back into schools, I think this is a very wise decision. Several people have suggested comment-style, so I think that's what we'll do. The more fic, the better, plus then all I really have to do is make the community, compile the prompts, and compile the master list at the end. I know I've got a few prompts already- I'd still love to see a story with Hoshi and Starbuck, and I'd also love to see someone else's interpretation of why Zarek calls Hoshi "that little frak" in BotS. I know [livejournal.com profile] puszysty has pointed out there was never a canon scene between Cain and Laird, and yes, that is a crime that really, really, really needs remedying. I'd actually kind of like to see something with Helo and Narcho, given Helo's marriage, or Narcho and Athena, too. That would be cool. This should be a fun ficathon.

Been working on Agency. I'm really happy with where it's going, although the scenes I'm in are difficult to write. Also, thank you SO much to everyone who said "Laura wouldn't do that", because a.) you're right and b.) I came up with a scenario that played into my nefarious purposes even better. Unfortunately, I find myself wanting to take a break and work on "The House that Tom Built", especially the Tom and Louis section. I'm still kind of stuck in The Space Between Us universe, and I really, really want to do some recovery fic for Louis, and the Tom and Louis section deals with that a lot, even if it's Tom's POV. But deadlines are fast approaching, so it's going to have to wait.

Glad [livejournal.com profile] twelvecolonies is going to be moving away from icon challenges for a bit. I'm iconed out. It's not like my graphics are great anyway (although I'm actually happy with the community icons I made for this recent challenge), so yay, less icons. I really, really enjoyed the motivational posters challenge, though- those were hysterical. Mine are under the cut )

Seriously. Such a fun challenge.

Okay. Toby wants a game of Chutes and Ladders, so off I go! Hope everyone's having a great day!
lls_mutant: (Default)
[livejournal.com profile] twelvecolonies just finished with a challenge that I had suggested, write a ficlet between two characters who have never exchanged a word on screen. In her infinite wisdom, [livejournal.com profile] nicole_anell said that this should be a ficathon. I totally agree, so let's run one!

Here's what I'm thinking as far as rules:

1.) A deadline two months after the start date, just because people tend to actually write fic with deadlines, whereas if you leave it too open ended they forget.

2.) Some sort of prompt list- even if it's just a list of characters? Maybe some additional prompts to go with them, but specific prompts. Not things like "Baltar/Sweet!Eight, between the sheets" but "Baltar/Sweet!Eight, a conversation on the basestar". I'm thinking a lot like the setup for [livejournal.com profile] lgbtfest

3.) No porn without plot. Sexually explicit material would be perfectly permissible, but it just has to have the plot, since that's the point of the challenge.

4.) I am currently thinking not an exchange, since that way it's a totally low maintenance challenge, and if people can write, great, and if they find they can't, they can drop with no consequences. I'm also thinking after [livejournal.com profile] bsg_bigbang finishes, especially since people are going back to school and everything.

[Poll #1603563]

Anyway, I'm thinking it could be fun! If anyone's got any suggestions or any big fandom events I'm missing, please let me know in the comments. And please pimp this one out, especially if you're one of the people on my list that's not a [livejournal.com profile] gaeta_squee person. (Nothing against the awesome Gaeta girls, just that we tend to be a fairly insular group.)

Twelve colony ficlets! This was such a fun challenge. And it produced such great fics. I had two, both using the same grouping (Billy and Hoshi). One was conventional, and the other was... oh good GOD, what happened to my brain????? (Fractured Family is the frakked up one- Stripped Naked is much more conventional.) I think I'd like Fractured Family more if I'd had another 1000 words to work with. ::sigh::
