Observations, mainly on Buffy

And a little on Toby. I'm so proud of him. He sat through me reading The Lorax and the entire The Sneetches and Other Tales book. This kid has one heck of an attention span, I like to think. (16 months soon. Wow.)



1.) Dear Harry Potter fandom,

Rupert Giles and Remus Lupin are not the same people, just because they're British. Thank you.

2.) Willow is so. freaking. adorable. SO cute.

3.) However, I will not say that Xander is being an idiot. Not at this point. Actually, I have a lot of respect right now for Xander. Why? Xander is totally aware that Willow is crazy about him, and that with a little bit of effort, he could probably get her to sleep with him. And unless Xander is 100% gay, how can he not be somewhat attracted to Willow on a physical level? But despite the fact that Xander is a horny teenage boy, he has too much respect and too much love for Willow to take advantage of what he must know to be true. And I'm positive the thought has crossed his mind, like in the frist episode of Season 2. You can't force a feeling, and I can't be mad at Xander for not feeling what Willow wants him to feel.

4.) Best visual gag ever? Xander frantically trying to find a stake in Buffy's purse, finding a tampon instead, and doing the "GAH! EW, NO!" thing with his hands. Hehehehehehehe. I laughed so hard at that, because every teenage boy I know would so do that. Well, almost every one.

5.) Okay, we've met Spike now. How in the world did a certain sector of fandom decide that Draco Malfoy is Spike? Really? Here's what they have in common so far: 1.) they're blond. 2.) they have English accents. That's IT. Okay, Spike thinks humans are beneath him and Draco thinks non-purebloods are beneath him, but that's apples and oranges. What seems to be a better comparison would be that Spike thinks humans are beneath him and Draco thinks cows and pigs and rutabegas are beneath him. Get what I'm saying? Maybe the mystery will become clearer as we forge on in Buffy.

6.) Favorite ship so far: Giles/Miss Calender.

7.) My new theory, especially now that I know Willow survives the series because I totally peeked at Wikipedia: Kaylee Frye is Willow's great great great great... great granddaughter. There's a definite similarity there in that they're very bright women who are adorable and sweet and yet can stand on their own two feet and take care of themselves pretty darn well.

8.) The student death rate at Sunnydale High is extremely high. Is this not worrying the parents?

9.) Boy, Seth Green was a skinny little thing back then, huh? It amazes me a bit that fandom seems to equate Giles to Remus when Oz is the werewolf. (I didn't even need to peek to know that one.) Why aren't there fics with Remus playing lead guitar in Lobulugs ate my Pigmy Puff?

10.) The girl who played the Incan Mummy (and I kept thinking the name was Empada, like the dish) really was very, very pretty.

Hmmm. Must make myself a Buffy icon. Preferably with Willow.

1. Also, they have light brown hair and mentor the protagonist. Except that Remus is a very reluctant mentor who shirks his duties after PoA, and Giles loves Buffy like a daughter and acts it. I love them both, but people it makes me grrrr when people write Remus as if he were Giles's twin.

2. She is. She annoys me sometimes, but I just adore her in the first few seasons.

3. *sits on hands* Xander frequently does the right thing for the wrong reasons. I love him.

4. How do I not remember that?

5. Draco as Spike? Spike as Draco? Whoah. Weird. OK, hmmmmm...They're both platinum blond, British aristocrats (though Spike tries desperately to hide it). Honestly, I could probably draw more lines between Spike and Sirius.

8. I sometimes joke that I attend grad school on the Hellmouth. Seriously, the death rate here (just for my own field of study) is so disturbingly high that I almost wish I'd thought to keep a tally since the beginning of the semester if not year.

1 and 9. Huh. Interesting. If people are in fact equating Giles with Remus, I would think they'd be doing it with Watcher Giles and Professor Remus. Not Sorcerer Giles. Not Marauder Remus. Not Werewolf Remus. Just two tea drinking, tweed wearing, quiet professor/father figure types for the hero being compared. I can kind of understand that. I think the reason Oz doesn't work is that Oz is a bit more independent than canon Remus.

10. Meh. The only thing I really liked about Ampata was the music associated with her.

I've written Remus/Xander, and Remus/Faith, and Sirius/Faith. But Lissa hasn't met Faith yet. And a bit of Xander/Oz, who are my BtVS boyslash comfort pairing.

There isn't much Remus/Oz out there, as far as I know.

Help me understand the Xander/Oz pairing. I'm really curious and I'll try to keep an open mind. I've never understood the Xander/Oz pairing. I've always been in the Angel/Spike camp. Help me understand.

1.) Ah, yes. Hair color and protaganist/mentor! But I agree totally with you on how they approach their roles. I was giving Remus a little slack through OotP because I could say he didn't want to interfere with Sirius, but I was so frustrated with him in HBP. He could have written. :P I'll bet Sirius was trying to smack him upside the head from beyond the Veil.

3.) He's so much a teenage boy, though. Deep thought is beyond him... :) (sorry to any guys reading this.)

9.) I need to do a crack-turned serious pre-Azkaban fic. I just need crack professions for James and Peter. Sirius wanting to be a priest, Remus as the lead guitarist for Lobolugs Ate My Pygmy Puff... it could be Major Fun. Seriously. I need to do this. I'll bet I could do it and make it pre-TDH canon compatible.

4.) It's just a very quick thing in, I think, episode 3 or 4 of Season 2. Xander doesn't actually say anything- he just nearly throws the tampon. It's quite cute.

5.) Yeah, I don't get it either. But I also rarely read fic involving Draco because he bores me. Draco's always been "what you see is what you get" to me- a whiny, bigoted poser who thinks he's a lot tougher and more bad-ass than he really is. :P

8.) Good lord, where do you go to grad school?

1 and 9.) I'm looking forward to meeting Sorcerer Giles. I totally peek and I've seen he's got a bad boy youth, and I find that thought very entertaining. I can already see your point about Oz, though, given that he was introduced actually arguing with one of his friends, which Remus never would have done at that age.

Um. Xander's my favorite character, and he and Oz are friends and they know each other, but not well enough that there isn't always something new to discover, and they're kind of opposites, but they're also geeks-together, and it just makes me warm and happy, especially post-Chosen.

4. That's it. I'm putting Seasons 1, 2, and 3 on my Christmahannukwanzukah list.

5. Yeah, he kinda bores me too. Though, he did start to become kind of interesting by the end of the last book. He couldn't kill Dumbledore, and the whole bit with Snape sitting down with his mum and auntie was rather intriguing.

8. I could tell you in a custom entry if you're really curious. We've mostly had people die from auto accidents if I remember correctly, but I think there's been a cardiac arrest or two in there. Oh, and by people, I mean almost entirely students and young alum (like, just graduated). It's really strange.

1 and 9. When you do, we may have more to discuss.

10. I used to have that as well as some BTVS character death songs and some clips of speeches by Spike. That computer died :(

Oh, Jenny/Giles. I forget just how cute they are together. She always makes me smile when she's around Giles. I could gush about them for hours.

I think I'm with thistlerose, Xander does so often do the right thing. You just may feel the need to pummel him for the reasons he does them.

I could go on but I'd be here for hours and I should be asleep.

2) I love the early series Willow. She does annoy me slightly in the later series but she's incredibly cute in the earlier ones.

3&4) Heh. I love Xander so very much.

5) Canon Draco Malfoy and season two Spike really don't have any similarities, but if you read some (non-Buffy) fanfiction Malfoy with him being in the right kind of situation, he's quite similar to season four Spike in my opinion (hope that wasn't too much of a spoiler!). I think it's the sarcasm. I love Spike. Possibly my favorite character.

7) Kaylee Frye is in Firefly I am assuming?

8) Haha, yes. I love the gags they make about this.

9) He's so little! Yes, I think Marauder Remus is quite Oz like, but the Remus/Giles obviously stems from PoA Remus.
