Is it just me, or does LJ seem quiet these days?

I can't believe it's Friday already. I feel like I've gotten nothing done all week. :P Of course, I've been sick, but still. Although we've watched a good 10 episodes (I think) of Heroes.

We are so not renting a movie this weekend, and just continuing through the series. I am LOVING it. My one disappointment was I was secretly hoping one of the characters would have an awesome name that would jump out at us as a name for Baby#2. No such luck, and ditto on the actors. And our next series is Rome (Season 1 again and then Season 2). I don't think Titus or Lucius are the names we are looking for :P

I definitely need to find a good Hiro icon though.

So not into any shipping type stuff, but I have to admit Hiro/Charlie is the epitome of cute. She was just as sweet as he is- they seemed like they would have been such a good couple. ::Sniff:: And I like(d?) Zach/Claire, too, because it was obvious he was head-over-heels for her. Actually, I like how romance has been handled in Heroes so far in general, because it's... well, normal.

I actually like romance in my fantasy. I really do. I just don't usually like the hero/heroine romance, especially when it takes precedence or when it becomes nauseating. Too often it's so obvious they were created for each other, and that's boring. I also really hate silly misunderstandings. And brooding bores me. That's why I never got into Buffy romances. Too much angst.

I do like complicated, messy romance though. I'm getting drawn into DL/Nikki more and more. And I'm finding Matt/Janice interesting, especially as he's struggling with how to deal with knowing about her infidelity. It's nice to see a fantasy genre actually explore romance within the context of marriage.

I was thinking about the romances I have planned for the original fiction I want to write, and it's funny what I've got. One is a not-really love triangle. There's a woman who has two kids with a man that she's now divorced from, but she doesn't hate him. I don't think he hates her, either, but neither of them feel like they should be together. She's currently engaged. Naturally, the new husband and the old one hate each other, not only on principle but on philosophical grounds, too. But the principle is more the father seeing the new guy horn in on his kids, not so much his wife. There's a gay couple that I have no intention of splitting up, but they've been together so long they might as well be married. It's discreet, but it's there and there are a few times where it's relevant. And there's one romance that appears to be the classic hero/heroine, but what's going to happen is the girl is going to realize that this ISN'T right, for either of them, and break it off because they both deserve better. The novel/series will end for her with her being good friends with the guy- especially as they'll be working together- but clearly single and NOT looking, but focused on friendship and her work (which will be very important civil rights stuff). And the women in the group are actually going to encourage her in this line (including the "villainess"), because it's obvious to a casual observer that the romantic relationship is Not Healthy, although not remotely abusive.

Other canon romances I'm thinking I really have enjoyed in fantasy:

1.) Jamie/Brienne from ASOIAF: Okay, so this isn't really a romance yet, but I'd kind of like to see it be one. I actually really like the dynamic between the two.

2.) Dany/Drogo from ASOIAF: My other favorite romance in ASOIAF. I like that Dany actually adapted to her new life, and that although Drogo acquired his bride, he still treated her as a human and with some respect. I really can't believe that all arranged marriages in the history of the world have resulted in terrible abuse (although all arranged marriages in fantasy sure seem to), and I give both Dany and Drogo credit for how this one turned out.

3.) Molly/Arthur in Harry Potter: I like married couples. :) I actually like Harry/Ginny well enough when kept on the page, and Ron/Hermione, although I saw them coming from the first few books. And while I think Arthur being killed off would have been far more poignant than Lupin croaking, I'm glad he lived, too. :)

4.) Zoe/Wash from Firefly: I really wish we'd gotten to see more in their child decision. That was really interesting. I also really liked how the role reversal was done. Zoe had some of the more "masculine" traits and Wash had some of the more "feminine", but it wasn't a case of genderswap. It was very well done. Plus, I liked that there was a very real friction there, but they worked with it. (Someone- maybe [livejournal.com profile] musesfool- commented that during Ariel, River slashes Jayne's shirt and Jayne hits River, and when that happens half the crew goes to Jayne and half goes to River. Interestingly, Zoe goes to Jayne and Wash goes to River. It's a very eloquent expression of that friction between them, I think.)

5.) Taran/Eilonwy from Prydain. It's much more the classic hero/heroine, but it's just so freaking cute. And Eilonwy is not your average Mary Sue princess :)

6.) I don't know if anyone else has been reading the Uglies trilogy by Scott Westerfield (ooh, good! Specials is finally out in paperback), but I've really been enjoying it. And I actually like the love triangle between Tally/David/Zane. It's set up in a believable manner, and both guys are actually (so far- I haven't read the last book) good guys. I have my suspicions it's going to come to a realistic conclusion, too.

Incidentally, if you enjoy YA fiction, this is a worthwhile series to read. I find the writing (in terms of prose) rather clumsy, but I really enjoy the story. It's set in a future Earth where, when a person turns sixteen, they undergo an operation to make them super, fantastically beautiful. Obviously, there are consequences. But it's a very interesting concept, based on a world where the people in power take advantage of the desire to conform physically and the pressure that we see in our society for people to look a certain way.

(Speaking of paperback, anyone know when Princess Diaries 8 comes out in paperback?)

7.) Han/Leia in Star Wars. Because really, how can you not love them?

8.) I did like Faramir/Eowyn in the extended edition of LOTR, but I think that was more because David Wenhem is really cute.

Can't think of too many more, though!
