Fuck That, She's Awesome
Because it's fun. I'm actually going to keep my list to ten. No, twenty- ten fictional, ten real life.
Ten Female Fictional Characters that Are Awesome
1. Kaylee Frye from Firefly. She's a technogeek AND a girly-girl. I want to be Kaylee.
2. Turanga Leela from Futurama. She's a one-eyed space captain with real insecurities that can kick the butts of the wierdos she hangs out with.
3. Mia Thermopolis from The Princess Diaries (the books). She's a 15 year old (to start) with true convictions, and although she questions them, in the end she stays true to who she is and what she believes. In high school.
4. Laura Roslin from Battlestar Galactica (I've only seen through Season 2.5). Because she rises so supremely to an occasion she was not prepared for, makes hard decisions without twittering, and is gracious in bitter defeat.
5. Scarlett O'Hara from Gone with the Wind. Say what you will about the sequel, it made a good point. Scarlett did nothing that she should have been ashamed of in terms of public life. (Her personal life is a whole other kettle of fish.) God forbid a woman do a man's job better than him or not want her husband to join the KKK. Scarlett dared to go against societal mores because they were stupid.
6. Nanny Ogg from Discworld. I think she's as smart as Granny in her way, but she has a better understanding of when discretion is required and of people in general. (NOT that she always listens to it.) Plus, she has the confidence to sing "The Hedgehog Song" in public, sober or drunk.
7. Menolly from Pern. Lessa might be the world leader and Brekke the survivor, but I always liked Menolly, especially as she transformed from talented but meek girl to strong woman.
8. Tally Youngblood from Uglies/Pretties/Specials (although I haven't read the latter.) If you haven't checked out this series, you really should. It's a fascinating look at a conformist society where so much emphasis is placed on appearance.
9. Abbey Bartlett from The West Wing. It takes a lot to be First Lady, and Abby is one of two people who can successfully kick the President in the ass and have him grovel at her feet. (Leo would be the other.)
10. Hermione Granger from Harry Potter. Because she makes book-learning and geekiness cool.
Ten Real Women Who Are Awesome
1. My mother. She's a fantastic mom, a teacher, and a great role model. Plus she involuntarily raised three kids half by herself, and took care of my dad's mother the last five years of her life, despite having no obligation to do so.
2. My dad's mother. She was a nurse who went into the army and rose almost to captain, making her the highest ranking military officer in that generation of my family. (My uncle made it to Commander, I think, so he far outstripped her. But she was much higher ranked than either of my grandfathers.) She was engaged and then broke it off and eventually married my grandfather at the old, old (back then) age of 40. They had two children, one who died at birth or not long after, and one whom they both outlived when he died at 42. She was sharp as a tack until the end, when she died at 95 a week after meeting her first great grandson.
3. My sister. When she realized she wasn't happy, she sucked it up and went to nursing school while working a full time job. She's now an RN, even though she once believed she sucked at math and science. (Also, kudos to my BIL for totally supporting her emotionally through all that.)
4. My mother-in-law. She raised four kids- one special needs, one gifted, and a pair of twins. How she did it I'll never know. Her three boys all went to college, even though no one in the families (that I know of) ever had before. And she did it all on a very limited income.
5. J.K. Rowling. I might criticize elements of the books, but she made me care enough to even bother. She made millions of people care about her stories- and got millions of kids interested in reading again. (My mom the fifth grade teacher swears that's true.)
6. The female senior scientist in my old research group. She was an excellent mentor to a lot of young scientists, incredibly bright and articulate, and is one of the most respected names in leather and hide chemistry.
7. The youth minister at our church. She puts in so many extra hours for these kids, and goes above and beyond her job description. AND she still has time for her own four kids. I don't know three of them well, but the eldest (whom I've had in youth group) is a joy.
8. Elizabeth Dole. I'm not fond of Hilary, but if Elizabeth Dole had run for President instead of her husband, I so would have voted for her.
9. Angelina Jolie. I never thought I'd say this, because actors and actresses generally annoy me when they hit the level of stardom she's at. And I'm not putting her here because of her acting. But she really does a LOT for other countries, and she's one of the few stars where I don't feel like she's doing that sort of stuff for show.
10. The Dixie Chicks. I'd say FUTK, but I really like Toby Keith, too, and respect his right to completely disagree with them. They just happened to be in the wrong genre for their sentiments.
And to round it out, Five Men who are Awesome With Respect to Women
1. My husband. Well, duh. :)
2. My old boss. Best mentor I could have asked for, and very conscientious that his female employees got the credit they deserved.
3. My brother-in-law. See the comments about my sister.
4. Joss Whedon. My f-list knows why.
5. My sons. Well, not yet. But believe me, they're going to be!

Also, yes, Abby Bartlett rocked. But then, so did CJ.

CJ also rocked, very much. CJ/Danny was always my West Wing OTP. :) I like how Aaron Sorkin writes women in general, I think.
