Okay, I think someone might have to stage an intervention.

A little background: a few months ago, I let Toby see ten minutes of Battlestar Galactica, tops. Ten innocuous minutes. And those ten minutes have launched a love affair with space. We've done our best to redirect him towards more age-appropriate stories like WALL-E, but Toby has a passion for the non-fiction section of the library, and we're working our way through the picture books about the planets right now. (We just finished reading about Saturn- last time was Jupiter. I swear my two year old wanders around the house reciting bits about Io and Europa and Saturn's rings.) We've also discovered The Black Hole and he's in love with that book.

Anyway. Toby's birthday is at the beginning of December. I asked him what kind of party did he want this year. Did he want a dinosaur party, a truck party, a space party... "Space, Mommy! Space!" And he's been stuck on it. So, space it is.

Would you believe there are NO space-themed paper goods at our party store, save the Attack of the Clones? No WALL-E, even. I haven't introduced Toby to Star Wars yet, because I remember being pretty terrified of Darth Vader. We're thinking more at 5-8 for that.

Anyway, it's an excuse for creativity, right? So, I picked up some adult invites that had stars on them (the invites don't matter as much and they have to go out by tomorrow, so I couldn't be creative). I got a black paper tablecloth that I'll glue silver cutout stars to, and got black and silver plates. I'll hang stars and planets made from cardboard or foam balls from the lights, and I can get maybe some space coloring books or WALL-E and galaxy bouncy balls as favors. Cute, right? (The cake will not be space themed. The cake will be this, but probably with chocolate frosting between the layers. (Especially since no one seems to like the recipe's frosting.)

Well, of course, the reason Toby loves space is the spaceships. And so I got this idea. For decorations, I'm going to print and cut out pictures of spaceships, which I guarantee will delight Toby to no end. So, my kid's three year old birthday party will have Serenity, Battlestar Galactica, the Millennium Falcon, the Cygnus, the Axiom, and any other ships I can think of zooming around. But the true geek idea? Well, I was thinking of a game, like pin the tail on the donkey. I could blow up a huge picture of the Galactica and do land the Viper on the Galactica, or a huge picture of Luke's X-Wing fighter and give them R2-D2's and do land the droid on the X-Wing.

Dora? Wiggles? Bob? Sesame Street? Hahahahahahaha. Forget it. Although, obviously, I can't pretend I'm not enjoying this.

On a less amusing note, Toby's suddenly freaking out about pooping on the potty. Great.

Go with R2D2 for the "pin the tail" idea. A LOT of little kids can identify Star Wars stuff because of the Clones cartoon that came out this year - even if they didn't see the movie, they saw all the previews, merchandising, etc.

(Otherwise - pin Pluto on the Solar System? ;))

What a wonderful idea... and just so you know, my brother introduced my kid to the original Star Wars movies when he was only 3 and there don't seem to be any lasting side effects. I don't think he was old enough to know to be scared of Darth Vader. He's 12 now and I am quite proud that he likes the 3 originals better than the 3 new ones overall, though he admits he likes the fights in the new ones better because of the advanced special effects.

You've probably read this book with Toby already, but one of my favorites when we did space week at school was "Dogs in Space." It's fiction, of course, but these dogs are, well, visiting the different planets in space.

I got it for the little boy I nannied for this summer as the gift that came along with his baby sister's gift. He and his sister loved it, but the best part is that one time we were reading it, they started laughing because the dogs were wearing sweaters -- how silly it was for dogs to wear sweaters! But, you know, dogs in space are a perfectly reasonable situation. :)

Anyway, if you haven't read it, I highly recommend it. Also, we used to paint those little styrofoam balls as a craft during space week -- they soak up regular tempra like a sponge and can turn out really cool. So if you're looking for decoration and/or activity ideas that might work.
