So. It's December 1. Thanksgiving is over, November is over, NaNoWriMo is over, and I'm finally okay with Christmas music being played. It's sort of a let-down day here at Casa de My Place, what with the holiday being done and Dad not only going back to work, but going on a trip, leaving me with the kids, one of whom (Toby) is sick (just a cold, I hope).

So. First of all, according to The Chicago Tribune, BSG webisodes start on the 12th. I was pretty much expecting that, because that's 5 weeks before the preview, and I figured they'd post 2 a week at this point. I was disappointed anyway, because apparently to me "mid December" means "any time after 12:01 AM December 1" and I was hoping that would be one of the "clues" tomorrow, but oh well.

I have to admit, the reason I'm so excited is pretty obvious. Given that we know Gaeta is in this one and it's called "The Face of the Enemy", I've got a pretty good guess that it might deal with his alliance with Tom Zarek. And if you can't figure out why I'm excited about that, you might just need to re-read the headers of that frakking 80-page fic I wrote. If that was the case, it would make me SO happy.

However, at the same time, one of the reasons I wanted to avoid getting involved in fanfic is I know I tend to get invested in the plot. I got part of my wish- we do know that Gaeta is officially gay, and if they don't have it that he was ever interested in Baltar then I'll smack them upside the head, because to me, that's the big plot point of Gaeta's sexuality- that he loved this person and then was so completely let down and betrayed by him. But if Tom and Felix don't really like each other, I can't pretend I won't be a little sad. I keep thinking Tom looks firm but sad in that trailer when Felix grabs him and shouts that it's murder, like he doesn't want to force Felix but he totally will, but who are we kidding? I'm seeing what I want to see.

Oh well. I'm just hoping that I'm write that the revelation of Gaeta/Hoshi means that there's a lot of screen time for the two of them and they're two of the big focal points of the webisodes. (And that the webisodes don't end with Hoshi on Adama's side and Gaeta on Zarek's and them bitter and angry and not speaking.) Please let Gaeta be happy for more than five minutes, writers?

Oh, and just for the record (and this is not a spoiler- I've been thinking it for a long time), although I like my Cavil-is-the-fifth-and-he-created-the-other-Cylons theory, my REAL guess for the Final Cylon is Ellen Tigh. It was Gaeta until D'Anna said the fifth isn't with the fleet and Gaeta's eyes didn't flare red at the end of Guess What's Coming to Dinner, which is right where the Gaeta reveal should have gone, and now I've switched over to Ellen. I really don't believe the identity can be a shocker- I think the shocker will be something like she knew she was a Cylon from the second Adama brought her aboard the Galactica, and the reason she encouraged Saul in his drunkenness is that she hoped it would somehow override his programming or something and he'd remember, too.

Argh. First Monday of the month- nuclear powerplant is testing its alarm system. Great.

Anyway. BSG aside, NaNoWriMo. I'm really, really glad I did it this year. It wasn't so much about the word count for me (I wrote both He That Believeth Me and Youth's Final Luxury in less than one month each, and I'm pretty sure they're both over 40,000 words. HTBIM is, for sure. TFL is close.) For me, it was about getting invested in my original fiction, so I have a drive to work on it.

I was not disappointed in that regards.

I did find it interesting, however. Going in, I knew what I thought my plot was. However, I also knew that it was missing some chunks, and that the lack of those chunks was going to require subplots, and I was worried about them being filler. Well, what happened was I ended up creating a co-plot that takes place in a different location. And that was exactly what the story needed. Not in terms of length, but in terms of substance. See, to give you a tiny bit of background, there was a revolution in a city that was tantamount to 9/11 and is really much more politically driven than the surface suggests. The original plot focused on a group of people who were fleeing the city, and that's where I was feeling like it was a journey story, which I didn't really want. I mean, I like that aspect and it's necessary, but it's not the whole story. So when I started NaNoWriMo, I ended up writing about the people who want to take the city back as well.

It was neat, because all of a sudden these characters started coming to life for me- characters I didn't know existed 30 days ago. One rapidly rocketed to favoritism (Gesh Tharamis, a journalist/activist who used to be dedicated to helping the slaves until their revolt killed his wife), and there are a few others that are headed there quickly (including Gesh's potential love interest, Annah Mervine, a young woman who was pretty wronged by her family and betrayed her own people and actively helped the slaves revolt, and yeah, she's a little crazy.) The HP people on my list know this but the BSGians don't- I LOVE OCs. Sure, I'll run screaming from a lot of them in fanfic, but let's face it- OCs done right are fun. And let's also face it- characters like Alphard, Caradoc Dearborn, and the Longbottoms? They were as close to OCs as you can get.

I did find myself repeating what I'd written a lot, just from another person's POV. And I'm positive I told more than showed, although that's something I've been getting a bit better at these days. I'll be very interested to see how many of those 50,000 words remain after a good hard edit.

It was also interesting because I found myself falling back to a trick I used in Pern fandom, which is celebrity reference. I'm not at all saying I base characters on celebrities, but rather "if this was a movie, who would play this part?" And it was weird where a few of them leapt out at me from. For example, that Gesh character I mentioned? Goldberg, from Schindler's List. I have no idea why that occurred to me as I haven't watched Schindler's List in years, but that's exactly what he looks like in my head. If I ever publish, feel free to play "spot the actor" and see how many you can get :)

I'm also finding that I've been pretty influenced by both HP and BSG, which is no big shock. And let me tell you, when you squish those two influences together, it ends up very interesting. Magic and suicide bombers. (Seriously.)

The one thing it really forced me to work through though is a big weakness I've seen in myself that's derived from writing fanfic. Now, I personally think anyone who thinks fanfic isn't "real" writing needs to read some of the good stuff, but I do have to concede that there are some negatives to writing the stuff. Aside from not being able to get paid for it, there's the huge disadvantage that you get used to playing in someone else's sandbox. And that's made me very... shaky on some things. I used to think it was things like setting, but that's not totally true. Yeah, I didn't do much of in YFL, but if you read AIL I take you to all sorts of places we never see in canon- Sirius's flat, Dearborn's lab, Turkey and Russia, the MWPP houses.... I can do setting. I've also started skipping over character appearance, especially in BSG, but it's not because I can't do it. I think I painted a very vivid picture of Caradoc pretty quickly. But what I find suddenly I'm shaky on is the creation of a world and a plot and a conveyance of that vision.

In the end, what I have feels like a good beginning, but I have to admit by the time I hit the 50,000 word mark I was feeling like I'd just really gotten the story going. And I think there's a lot of truth in that, and when I go back and edit and rewrite I'll find a lot of stuff getting cut. Oh, there's some good stuff in there, but there's a lot of stuff where I'm just feeling my way around, too.

Now that we're done, I'm going to insist on 1000 words a day from myself, with the only writing taking precedence over it being MRFH. I'll still probably write some fanfic (Dee and Hoshi are chomping at the bit, although I'd really like to see if we're going to learn Hoshi's real name), but I have to do my 1000 words original first on any given day.

So, other news... we had a good Thanksgiving, although it was hectic. I made turkey with bacon, dijon and herb butter and cider gravy, which was amazing, and we had Toby's birthday cake for the family on T-day. We had Toby's birthday party yesterday, which was a major endeavor and went quite well. We had four little boys here with their families, and it went for two hours. The kids just played and we ate lunch and the cookie cake I made (and OMG- YUM!), but it was still exhausting. I think (hope) that Toby's got the bad day of a cold today, so napping is essential and I think we'll just watch a movie after naps. And figure out what we're doing for Trevor's birthday, which is in two weeks.

December 12, huh? SciFi, you're killing me.

Dude. Look at this. Read this. My squee has just gone through the roof. We might as well call this series the Gaeta-sodes.

Congrats on finishing NaNoWriMo! Again, I think. But it bears repeating. :) I'm jealous I couldn't participate but I really didn't have time.

December 12? Huh. I was hoping it would be after December 15 when I'll write my last test. So I could look forward to it without worrying about my study schedule at the same time. But still. Yaih! I am so damn curious about these webisodes. I wonder about the kissing. Whether it will be all special and romantic or just wild making out. I'm all for Gaeta charging in passionately. :D

These differences between fanfic and original fiction are interesting. I do have problems switching back to original fic sometimes, too, but it's more of a social issue. It's hard to remember that there are different rules. I can't write about gay people without automatically making a political statement in original fic (which is especially annoying if you write a historical novel set in Rome where there are known cases of gay marriage, for God's sake). Similar problem with strong female characters in some situations. Sex has to be tackled very differently. I can't try around with style and format as much as I like to do. It's very irritating on occasions. Concerning world building, not so much of an issue because I tend to create "worlds" in fanfic as well, probably more so then I should (like in "Lilacs", I tend to make up random background details anyway). I agree that writing fanfic is very much "real" writing. Let's face it, there are things fanfic writers are usually better at. They often have a much more detailed and specific idea about their characters, especially in love stories. They often handle gender issues better. I'd also love to introduce Gene Roddenberry or RDM to the concept of Mary Sues. :D

Oh, and the thing with celebrity references. This is interesting! I've never done that but it sometimes happens on accident, confusing the hell out of me, so I'm surprised to hear that it works for you. I have a character called Felix who happens to have black curly hair (he's Sicilian! I can't change it!). I've had him since before watching BSG. Now I keep picturing AJ who doesn't even look Italian to me and it's very confusing to remember that no, he's not a navigator on a battlestar, he's actually used to wearing a toga.

Anyway, enough of the rambling. This was a very interesting entry. Writing meta always makes me happy. :)

::SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!:: (Feel free to snag the icon, btw, if you haven't made one already!)

Although from the sounds of it, I wonder if Hoshi will even be in the episodes for the most part. Because I can't see Gaeta and Hoshi making out in a Raptor (erm, filled with other people, that is). And I'm wondering if this is going to make us suspect that Gaeta is really the final Cylon and is a sleeper agent like Boomer, and he's going to realize he killed the person.

But. In honor of that picture, and that thought that Hoshi isn't actually in these....

"You shouldn't be going," Lucas insisted, looking over his shoulder at the Raptor.

"I'll be fine," Felix said, with a lot more bravado than he felt. "It won't be for long."

"I know." Lucas stepped closer, touching his cheek. It wasn't like them to be this open when others were watching, but for once, they couldn't help it. "But last time you left, I almost lost you. I don't want to take that chance again. This time I might..." his fingers traced Felix's jaw.

"You won't," was all Felix had time to whisper before Lucas's lips closed over his. And then he had to hold on, hold on or lose his balance, hold on to this anchor or be swept away. He lost himself for a long moment in the kiss, until Tigh walked by them with a meaningful growl. Felix didn't want to let go, but they pulled apart reluctantly anyway.

"Be careful," Lucas said as Felix began to make his way to the Raptor.

"I will be."

A Marine reached down to help him in. Felix took his hand, trying to stifle the embarrassment at his awkward ascent.

"Felix," Lucas called before he sat down. "I love you."

Felix smiled. "I love you, too."

From the little they mentioned and the screencap, I'm betting it's Hoshi saying goodbye to Gaeta as Gaeta gets into the Raptor. And it looks tender. :)

Interesting differences you bring up in fanfic vs. original fic. Because I write fantasy, I don't feel as compelled to not make political statements, I guess. (Especially since this one is a so-not-thinly-veiled-9/11 story.)

Similar problem with strong female characters in some situations.

It's so funny you mention that, because one of the things I noticed during NaNoWriMo is how often I create male characters vs. female characters. I mean, I have some strong female characters. But as me to create a character, and odds are good that it will be a "he". I really noticed it when this crime lord type (sort of) came into existence. I automatically made him a guy, and then later wondered why I did that. There was absolutely no reason that character couldn't be female. (Of course, now I have it stuck in my head that Mark Shepphard (Romo Lampkin/Badger) would play that part, so he's come to life and I'm not going to change it. But still.)

so I'm surprised to hear that it works for you.

I've found it has to be very specific. I can't say "this girl looks like Kandyse McLure", but "This is a part she would play." (the aforementioned Annah.) I think it helps me hear the lines a bit better, if that makes sense. It gives the characters more of a voice. It also keeps the characters straight a bit more from what I'm used to seeing them in and my own characters. (Because Annah is NOTHING like Dee. Heh.)

Glad you enjoyed it, and thanks for the response! I always find it interesting to read people's writing metas as well :)

Brilliant! You don't waste time, do you? Great icon. Lovely ficlet. I think you're right that in the first webisode we will see Hoshi worrying about Felix going away again after what happened on the Demetrius mission. And yes, am I right in thinking that is Hoshi's hand cupping Felix's cheek? LOL, I loved Tigh growling in disapproval.

In regards to the rest of your post...

But if Tom and Felix don't really like each other, I can't pretend I won't be a little sad.

Look on the bright side. Felix can't hate Zarek as much as he hates Baltar! Yet I'm sticking with my Baltar/Gaeta ship for better or worse. Remember, angst is good! I can imagine Felix disliking Zarek based on a) Zarek signing his death warrant, and b) his BFF Dee hates his guts. However I think that Zarek might have sympathy for Felix after he lost his leg on the "classified" Demetrius mission that Zarek clearly did not approve of. At least I hope so. It'll hurt if Zarek is just using Felix in a cold tactical way.

my REAL guess for the Final Cylon is Ellen Tigh

Have you read 'the final five of the fifth' spoiler then? If that list is true and it's one of those five people, well - I'm torn between Ellen, Gaeta and Roslin. I'm such a big Ellen Tigh fan (I don't care that I'm in a minority here!) I've always thought she was a terrific character, so I'd love it to be her. But then I also love the "Ellen is an aged Six model" theory. Anything that brings Ellen back is fine by me.

If the Ellen/Six theories are right then I'm placing my bets - Roslin or Gaeta for the final cylon. I had convinced myself it wasn't Gaeta after the D'Anna line but his major role in the webisodes has got me wondering again. Frak it, I still say it's Laura "I'm coming for all of you!" Roslin.

And it looks tender. :)

Damn. ;)

No, I saw right after writing the comment. I'm fine with tender. Felix deserves tender. :) Still, passionate would have been nice.

But as me to create a character, and odds are good that it will be a "he".

There are less stereotypes that have to be avoided with guys. It's easier in a way. We're not used to seeing complex female characters, either, so they're harder to think up. Or that's my experience, anyway. :)

I usually write fantasy, too, btw.

It's been a long day- I needed something good and fannish and fun! :) (Toby's sick :P ) And yeah, I'm 99% positive that's Hoshi's hand cupping Felix's cheek. ::grin::

Look on the bright side. Felix can't hate Zarek as much as he hates Baltar!

EXCELLENT point :) I won't be upset if they don't go that way, because honestly pretty much any direction makes just as much sense, just a little bummed. :) I'm actually a little happier knowing the webisodes AREN'T dealing with Tom and Gaeta, just because it keeps that more vague and fanfic more open :)

Have you read 'the final five of the fifth' spoiler then?

I did, although my guess was Ellen since Revelations. I also found another source that said that the "Cylon's not in the Last Supper Picture" and D'anna's statement about them not being in the Fleet can be taken at face value. Ellen requires a LOT less explanation than Cally- especially with her "BOO!!!" when she came on board. :)

I'm still liking the idea that Gaeta is a sleeper Seven and the rest of that line has been boxed, and maybe he does kill the person who dies in the webisodes. But the biggest argument I have against that is that I don't think that they'd put something so important in the webisodes. I think the webisodes are just going to explore the state of mind of the Fleet, and will get the barest mention in the show, like the earlier webisodes did. (Still hoping that Gaeta/Hoshi makes it to the show, though, although I think it will. But that's just me being very optimistic.)

I like the Ellen/Six theories, but I also like the idea that it's not true, and that Ellen and Six just happen to look alike because the actresses look similar. I feel like the last final fiver MUST be a woman (and I think it being Roslin would be a cheat- she's too major of a character, if that makes sense). I also really feel like the identity can't be a surprise, and we as the fans have really blown that piece of the puzzle way out of proportion. I think more of the surprise is something fundamental about their makeup or what they know or something. Or that it IS Ellen, and Starbuck was actually the first Cylon-Cylon child and Tigh and Ellen are really her parents and gave that copy of her to humans to raise :) Or something like that.

Aww, so sweet. I really start liking Lucas. I hope he'll be like that in canon. I'd ship them immediately.

You know, when I read about the raptor mission my first thought was "You're sending GAETA on wherever-it-goes? He lost a frakking LEG! Don't you CARE?" I'm worried like Hoshi. Gaeta is still in recovery. I had an immediate wave of dislike for Adama there. Although I realize I don't know anything about that mission. I'm just being protective.

Gaeta has a totally smug expression of "finally!" in that picture...

Aww, this was just absolutely lovely. I love the pacing of the lead-up to the kiss, it felt very filmic, if you know what I mean. And I loved the beat you put in there with Tigh's growl. Perfect.

But this was the line that got me the most:
And then he had to hold on, hold on or lose his balance, hold on to this anchor or be swept away.

*sigh* I really do hope Hoshi's as protective and loving in canon as he has been these little ficlets you're writing. I'm with [livejournal.com profile] trovia. Although I could never give up Gaeta/Baltar completely, I'd totally ship Gaeta/Hoshi in a flash if he was this nice to him.

As you can see, I've already snagged your icon in preparation for the possibility. :D

Thanks! I'm hopeful he'll be like that in canon, too. In all seriousness, Felix needs something good, or you'd really have to wonder why he isn't considering airlocking himself right now. They really need to let him up for air.

And yeah, I thought the same thing about him being sent on a mission :) Either that, or all of these "strangers" are people from sickbay. (Because how else does Felix not know a lot of the people from Galactica?)

I hope he's that protective and loving, too. I'm cautiously optimistic, because they really do need to give Felix SOMETHING good, otherwise the viewer is going to start asking why he hasn't offed himself yet. But the way Hoshi's touching his cheek in that picture looks so tender....

I gleefully gave up Gaeta/Zarek in favor of Gaeta/Hoshi, promptly regulating Zarek back to manipulative father figure :) I was surprised how easy it was, but I guess it's more because Gaeta's my OTC (character as opposed to pairing), and really, I could have gotten into Gaeta/just about anyone. :)

And snag away, although it's not nearly as funny as some of the others ;)

Can't read the spoilery stuff, but the writing stuff is interesting. I think you are right there are some writing muscles you don't exercise writing fanfic. I write so AU I'm always creating worlds. But how do you ever end a novel? How do you not make it too large? Fan fic boundaries rein me in and I think I need that.

You tend to write long too. It's a good thing but I worry about it in myself. Are you ever worried it might just go on . . . forever?
