2008 in Writing
Jan. 2nd, 2009 11:05 pmFirst, a medical question. Does anyone who's had surgery find that the scars from that bug you in inclement weather? It snowed today, and the spot where they cut into me for the C-sections has been driving me nuts.
Anyway.
I wrote a LOT. More than I thought. Six Harry Potter fics. Fourteen BSG fics. And NaNoWriMo. That might not sound like a lot, but He That Believeth in Me and Youth's Final Luxury both clocked in around 40,000 words, NaNoWriMo was 50,000, and AIL 14, Butterfly Casualties (The Time Traveler's Boyfriend Remix), and The Line in the Sand were all probably over 20,000. With those right there, that's 190,000 words, and add in the others, I easily cleared 200,000 words. Plus anything I wrote for Mutant Reviewers from Hell.
Wow.
So. The meme.
Best story I wrote: He That Believeth In Me. The "Sirius wanted to be a Catholic priest" story. I really liked this one, especially the parts that took place in Morocco. It's probably some of the best work I've ever done, and I think it will be a while before I feel like I've topped it. Plus, it's the one that seems to have genuinely touched people the most, which makes me very, very proud.
Most underappreciated story I wrote: Probably The Grass Is Always Greener. Gen (and this is close enough to gen, even though it's got Petunia/Vernon and Lily/James) is always underappreciated in the Harry Potter fandom.
Most fun story to write: Youth's Final Luxury. This was when I let go of my BSG reservations, and just went nuts with the plottiness. I really like this version of Zarek and Gaeta, and really, really wish it could be canon. I know it probably won't be, but that doesn't mean I don't like it.
Sexiest story: Oh geeze, I don't really write sex well for the most part. I tend to avoid writing it, unless I get into a strange mood. And then I tend to go more for comedy than I do for actual sex. That said, I'll go for Discovery, which was Gaeta/Billy/Dee. And very silly.
Story I wrote to fix things: Easy one! Measure of a Man. Total wank-away fic regarding the Gaeta/Eight relationship, because I still have a hard time believing that he was in love with her, given that she was one of his Cylon overlords.
Hardest story to write: Anything to do with Accidentally In Love. (Part 14 was posted this year.) I'm starting to get out of the canon, and it's tough to get back into it. Unfortunate, but true.
Crackiest story: The Stories We Tell, a BSG crackfic. Well, mostly crack. If you've been around me long enough, you know that except for Accio Bananas!, my crack usually has some sort of serious twist at the end. (Ooh, that's right. I forgot that I wrote the thing where the Order of the Phoenix all gets their T-shirts, too.) This one is no exception. I want to tell you what the crack is, but if you've read it, you know, and if you haven't, telling you sort of spoils it.
Biggest surprise: The co-plot in my NaNoWriMo project. See, there's this city that's essentially destroyed and taken over by uprising slaves. I've known about the group fleeing the city for a long time. I also knew their plot was good, but too thin to carry the book. I did NOT know about the group that was ready to fight to take the city back.
Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you: Anything I wrote with Gaeta/Zarek. Not Gaeta-Zarek, but yes, with the slash. I think there are two, but there might be more. I'm getting lazy to look up the links, because my copy-paste function isn't working.
Most revealing story: He That Believeth In Me, I think. I talk a LOT about faith in that one, and I think it's no secret that a lot of the ideas on faith (both from Sirius and Remus) come from my own beliefs.
Themes, or absence thereof: Ever noticed that I don't write much infidelity? There is none in my HP stuff. There isn't even technically any in my BSG stuff, because Gaius flat-out tells Felix he will have other partners. It's not Gaius's fault if Felix doesn't take that seriously. (It will have to show up in my Dee-Hoshi story, but not because I put it there.) And it might come up in my NaNoWriMo stuff, but I'm not completely sure. And it won't be much. I don't like writing infidelity. End stop.
Noteworthy event: I got sucked into BSG fandom. And I have to say, the Gaeta community is one of the nicest communities I've EVER encountered on the internet, with the exception of the Mutants.
Fic goals: More original stuff!
Sweetest moment: Hmmm. For Harry Potter, I'd have to go with Remus telling Sirius why he never liked Gabriel in He That Believeth in Me. For BSG, I'd have to go with the entirety of Ten Good Things Happen to Felix Gaeta. The reason's in the title.
Sentence I thought was well-crafted:
The stories we tell say a lot about us. They lay our hopes and dreams on the line in a way that makes us quite vulnerable, should anyone choose to read into it. -Baltar, The Stories we Tell
Sentence that amused me most: Well, it beats butterfly princesses and fairy friends, so he obligingly opens the manual. -Ten Good Things Happen to Felix Gaeta
Other notable scenes I liked:
-Peter going with Sirius for the HIV test in The Line in the Sand
-Cedric's conversation with his mother in Butterfly Casualties (The Time Traveler's Boyfriend Remix) (I was also really pleased with the title)
-Tom and Felix getting stoned on New Caprica in Youth's Final Luxury
-Gaeta and Jammer on the swings in Youth's Final Luxury
-The Adama section in Through the Cracks
-Felix's two fathers in Measure of a Man
-Gesh Tharamis, one of my new characters in my NaNoWriMo project
Anyway.
