You probably all know it, but go Iowa!!!!!

Honestly. Parts of the article (quotes from the opposition) made me want to hit things (explain to me how ANYONE ELSE'S MARRIAGE IN THE WORLD affects how sacred my own is, please?), but those are the losers in this battle today.

Go Iowa! May the other states (like Pennsylvania!) not be far behind you!

ETA and totally unrelated: Apparently, defecation leads to the Dark Side. Direct quote from Toby, "I'm not Starbuck anymore. I pooped on the potty and then I was Darth Vader!"

Come to the Dark Side. We have toilet paper.

BOO-YAH! Liberty marches on, baybee. Not only that, but a *unanimous* decision! And apparently no possiblity of repeal for at least three years.

Look, people, there's civil union and then there's religious marriage. I don't know why people can't get it through their thick noggins that these can be two different things.

No kidding. Especially since there are plenty of straight couples that have civil marriages. One of my good friends (and also an ex) did. It was a beautiful wedding, and I'm pretty sure he and his wife hold all the love, respect, fidelity and those sorts of values that me and my church-married husband do.

And besides, the only two people who have any say on what a marriage is like is the two people in it. And frankly, I've known plenty of het couples that "devalue the sanctity of marriage" or whatever all on their own, thanks :P

I was actually reading an article in an old Newsweek (I was in a doctor's office, which explains why it was from December) pointing out how anti het-marriage the Bible actually is. I mean, it's anti-divorce, but in the Old Testament, they're all polygamous, and Jesus preached a different sort of family, and Paul... heh, well Paul basically said "If you MUST have sex, fine. But get married. But SEX IS EVIL!!!" I'm not remotely enough of a theologian to know how accurate this article was and what they were skipping, but I remembered everything they were referencing.

(would that be the Dixie Chicks?)

Yeah, I remember that lovely thought of Paul's. I wonder if he was jealous because he wasn't getting any. }:> (ohhhh, I have to go to confession now!)

A-FREAKIN'-MEN. I really wish all these politicians who are all up in arms about "OH NOES THAT'S NOT GOD'S LAW" (...usually the ones who are actually gay) would maybe, I dunno, worry about adultery before they worry about same-sex unions. @@→∞

Wow, Iowa. That's not exactly the first state that jumps to mind as being willing to do this. YAY for them! :D

Yeah, I know, right? But that's what makes it even more exciting! :)

Heee! Aww, Toby.

(didn't feel that the actual Toby icon was appropriate...but at least this is WW-themed. As my lunch break is about to be!)

I love Iowa. I'm not sure I've ever really thought about Iowa before, but right now, I would like to bake them a really, really, really big rainbow cake. :)

Your son never ceases to amuse. ♥

Whoo-hoo! *breaks out my Iowa sweatshirt* I love my state, but I am super-proud to be an Iowan today.

I'm a law student, and today at school was about as crazy-happy as law school gets, aside from the end of finals week. It was a huge win, and probably one of the biggest cases the Iowa Supreme Court has decided in a long time. And on top of that, the opinion the court issued is just beautiful. It may not mean a lot to non-lawyer-wannabe folks, but as far as I can see, the judge dotted every "i" and crossed every "t" of that opinion so clearly and thoroughly that it's going to be darn hard for anybody to attack it on rational grounds--not that anybody besides the Iowa legislature can anyway, and as prophetkristy pointed out, it takes a long time for a constitutional amendment to even come to a popular vote in Iowa. Also, the judge explicitly addresses exactly what you're talking about with the separation between civil marriage and religious marriage in an incredibly respectful and thoughtful way. Really, one couldn't ask for a better outcome.

In terms of Iowa being a bit surprising--it's funny, but Iowa tends to be more progressive on civil rights issues than one would think, considering our geography (one of the very few states to never ban interracial marriage, and the first to admit a woman to the practice of law, for example). But anyway, yay, go Iowa!

As I said to a friend, we in Illinois should be mighty embarassed that Iowa (!) beat us to it.

And Toby! That just cracks me up!
