So... sign-ups are open! [livejournal.com profile] rose_griffes and I are running the BSG specific Remix. I'd freak out more, but it's not going to be anywhere near as huge as the multifandom regular Remix that [livejournal.com profile] musesfool runs/ran. So, come on over and sign up: here's the info!

Ah, spring. Rain, flowers, showers, and Remix!

Well, not THE Remix. Not the big multi-fandom one. But the BSG Remix! Come on- you know you want to play.

(Yes, this remix challenge and these rules are completely based on the Remix ([livejournal.com profile] remixredux08 being the most recent) run by [livejournal.com profile] musesfool and her cohorts. We thank them for their brilliance.)

What the frak is a Remix?

Have you ever read a fic and thought to yourself: that was so good, I wish I'd written it? Of course, if you had you would have done a few things differently. Have you ever wished that more people would write the kind of fic you like to read? Or have you ever done the multifandom Remix challenge, and wished there was more BSG fic in it? Then this challenge is for you. You'll have the opportunity to try your hand at re-imagining someone else's work, while also giving them a chance to re-imagine yours.

After all, what else is our BSG but the ultimate Remix?

Good luck with your challenge! I'll be interested to read the results. I don't think I'll sign up myself cos honestly I suck at challenges. I prefer to stick to my own bunnies and not restrict myself. And after S&W I'm really needing a breather from BSG fic altogether.

Thanks! Yeah, I can see where you need a break after Secrets and Whispers- that was an intense one :) And I'm knowing exactly how you felt with that- I'm SO ready to put YFL to bed. I'm curious to see who all will sign up- we're getting a decent turnout already, which is exciting.

I'm hoping I'll have my LGBTfest fic done for beta in the next day or two. (I'd better.) Are you still game for betaing? (It is kind of heartbreaking, just to warn you.)

Yeah, you bet! Heartbreaking is kinda my thing.

I am excited for this, although I'm saddened by the sheer volume of people saying they will not write slash of any kind. I feel like that's over 50% of my stories! Ah well.

Are you going to assign remixes or do the writers get to choose?

That was so my thoughts! Because every single piece I have is overtly slash. I don't actually have ideas that aren't. I guess I'm just not a gen writer. D:

Well, maybe we'll end up remixing each other. Certainly, *I* wouldn't think that was the worst fate ever. :)

Judging by what I'm seeing there on the list, I'm pretty sure that's a likely possibility. ^^ I was torn at first between the 'i should get out of my comfort zone' idea and the 'i should do what i know' idea and I think I picked a happy medium there, but. D:

We're going to assign a writer to remix, but writers get to choose the story. That way everyone gets one :)

Tell me about it with the slash! I have some sympathy for it, in that I wouldn't ask someone not comfortable writing m/m sex to remix some who wrote the sex as a large part of their stories. But Gaeta/Hoshi IS canon now, and I'm trying to think of a single story I have that's not slash in some way. I can think of... one, maybe? And that's only because it wasn't canon at that point that Gaeta had a lover, although I did insinuate he slept with Baltar. But you don't have to write sex, that's the thing. Heck, you could make it almost totally gen. I mean, hubby and I are married, but I'd say 95% of the time, we're G-rated, y'know? Most couples do things besides have sex ;)

At least we have a few Gaeta girls, and a few people who haven't said they won't write slash. I'll be interested to look at the signups anyway and see how much crossover we can do, pushing people not so completely to their preferred pairings. On the one hand, I want this to be lots of fun for people, and on the other, I want to challenge people a little, too. Should be entertaining ;)

Hah, yeah... I almost freaked out and said that I wouldn't write Kara/Lee either, but I already had three things on my list, so... Hopefully we can get a good balance of comfortable and challenging when we start matching people.

Poor [livejournal.com profile] millari has already seen me whine that she doesn't write more het or gen, because that's what interests me. BSG was a good fandom for me to start with because it is quite het-friendly compared to some others. (Heh, the first time I read an explanation that slash was being written by women for women, my reaction was, "Really? But why? I don't get it.")

eta: I hope that last comment didn't sound rude; it's fascinating to me what different things people like in reading/writing fanfic.

No- it didn't sound rude at all :)

What I find interesting about Remix is that, for the most part, you can turn anything gen. I can't do it with CapSix/Tigh, because there was so little to their relationship, but if I was handed anything else, I could probably do it. I mean, you have to keep them paired, of course, but you don't have to delve so deeply into their relationship.

It's funny that I don't read or write much het, because Adama/Roslin used to be my OTP until 4.5. (I got a little ticked with them, and truthfully my OTP is now Gaeta-Zarek, but in a father-son sort of way as opposed to sexual, although I'm not above writing the sexual AT ALL.) But it is definitely a het-friendly fandom. Frankly, I don't see much slash in it at all, which is weird coming from the HP fandom! Well, I see slash in what I read because I read so much Gaeta, but outside of that...

I've been going through the 23 people we've got so far (23!), and actually only 4 or 5 have given a flat out "no slash." There are some that have said femmeslash only, or have said they won't write canon pairings, but Gaeta/Hoshi is canon, so there :) But about 9 either didn't mention it or were obviously into slash, so it won't be as desperate as I was worrying for a moment.

23 people already. Wow.

23, woohoo! This is v. v. exciting! We haven't even gotten the news to the K/L and A/R comms...

Frankly, I don't see much slash in it at all, which is weird coming from the HP fandom! Well, I see slash in what I read because I read so much Gaeta, but outside of that...

I've only peeked at the edges of HP fandom; it's a bit notorious, yeah? Nicknames for various shipping groups, crazy crazy fangirls... though it would be a fun universe to play in. (No plotbunnies in my own mind for it, but I can see the appeal.)

It's funny that I don't read or write much het, because Adama/Roslin used to be my OTP until 4.5.

I've had problems with Bill Adama for a long time, so I was never a fan of the pair. Every once in a while a really well-written story can convince me that they're good for each other.

I'm actually not very shippy--and resented my brain for deciding to care about Kara/Sam, since I knew logically that they were doomed. Heh.

Wow, we haven't? That's pretty scary, but in a good way. ::bounces with excitement::

HP fandom IS scary. I've stuck to my own little corner, which frankly, is probably about as big as the BSG fandom. Well, no, that's an exaggeration, but yeah. I was a Remus/Sirius shipper, and there was always TONS of room there. Although I think at this point I've just about said what I want to say about them. ::sigh:: And the gen community was pretty normal.

Oooh. What were your problems with Adama? I fell out of love with him in Season 4 and never completely regained my love for him (I need to rewatch the first three seasons again!), so I'm always curious. I also REALLY want to make the point at some point in Youth's Final Luxury that Bill Adama is in no way without ambition and can't say "I never wanted this" in terms of command (although I don't think he does), because you have to be pretty committed to make it to Commander.

I'm not super shippy myself. I have a lot of fun with Gaeta and Hoshi, but that's my main writing ship. I REALLY like Gaeta and Zarek, but I really put them together as more of a father son pairing. (But I confess to being very intrigued by the idea of them as lovers.) But I never got into any of the Kara ships or the Lee ships or anything like that, although I love Sam Anders.

I know we have a while to decide this, but we've both tossed our hats in the ring. How are we going to assign ourselves? :) I have a couple of ideas, (you assign me and I assign you, or we remix each other if you don't mind Gaeta/Hoshi non-explicit stuff) but nothing too concrete yet. Thoughts?

Ooh, this sounds like a lot of fun. I may have to hurry up and try to write a couple shorter fics so I'll qualify.

I was surprised by the number of folks who wouldn't write slash, too. I mean, I essentially don't write sex scenes at all (or more accurately, I belong to the Thomas Hardy school of sex scenes: "...and then he leaned over and caressed her cheek." [chapter end] [new chapter] "The next morning,"), so maybe I'm not one to talk, but that does nix a rather large chunk of canon (Gaeta/Hoshi) and very-well-could-be canon (Gaeta/Baltar).

This is a bit off-topic, but does anybody know of some good meta on why women write slash? I've read some scholarly research (yes, there is scholarly research on fanfic--in a weird way, that's kind of how I discovered fanfic), but I'm curious what writers have to say about it. I admit, I had the same "but why?" reaction to it at first, too, because it's very odd that something would be quite popular with a segment of fan producers and consumers but that commercial producers have pretty much ignored the market.

Anyway, sorry for hijacking, and I hope I can pull enough fics together in time to join in!

I just sent a request for a post to two Kara/Lee comms and to the adama_roslin comm mod. Woohoo! And sometime soon I should poke around people's profiles on LJ and figure out what other comms we're missing. Apparently there's one called bsg_women, for example, and I'm sure there are more that I don't know about.

Oooh. What were your problems with Adama? I fell out of love with him in Season 4 and never completely regained my love for him (I need to rewatch the first three seasons again!), so I'm always curious.

*flails* It's hard to put into words. I never really connected with him in the first place, though I appreciated that he got stuck with a lot of hard choices. Then he said lines like "Because you're my son" to Lee and I wanted to appreciate those phrases the way the show intended, but it didn't quite work for me. Add to that my feeling that Laura Roslin was way too good (and too complicated) for him.

I do think the show did a good job with the Roslin/Adama slo-mance up through season three. Even though I didn't ship those two, I appreciated that there was a depth of emotion, some connection between them... and that they had good reasons not to act on it.

I REALLY like Gaeta and Zarek, but I really put them together as more of a father son pairing.

Heh. I'm just a fan of Zarek plotting something mysterious. Though I never did think about him a lot. (I'm much more likely to pay attention to secondary female characters than secondary male characters. I once wrote almost 5000 words of fic for Jean Barolay, for example. Really. My brain is a weird place.)

Thoughts?

Hmmmm. *thinks* For the second option we should probably peek at each other's fic lists... you might not find much that interests you in mine or vice versa. (If you've done more remixes, maybe that doesn't matter to you. Since I've only done one, I like the security of knowing there's something for me to connect with.) Otherwise I think the first option works well--assigning each other so that no one can say we're being preferential.

Cool. I saw that both thewireless and galactica_news picked us up, too. We're already up to 24 (25 once [livejournal.com profile] proxie_allie signs up!), so we're doing pretty good, given that we're first time mods. I've been writing down a little bit just to see how we're doing on matching, and it seems like we won't have TOO big a headache.

Interesting thoughts on Adama. I liked him for a while, although I have to admit I adore the idea of Roslin/Zarek or Roslin/Maya on New Caprica (and apparently the manga went and implied the second, and I'm perfectly happy with Zarek just lusting after Roslin because she is Awesome and All Must Realize This. Except sweetie, you don't put someone you can't handle as president in the VP slot, okay?????)

I'll have to check out your Jean Barolay fic! I've never read much on her, but she's right up my ally as much as any secondary character for ficcing. I like the secondaries because I feel like we get the stories from the primary characters on the show, but the secondary ones... they have a lot that they're doing and we never hear. I'm doing a BSG fic for [livejournal.com profile] femgenficathon, and I'm thinking it might be a Seelix fic. I want to know more about Seelix on New Caprica and then why she mutinied.

I know I can remix something from yours, because I could easily play with that Gaeta/Racetrack snippet that you had up last year. But I'm comfortable remixing anything (except a CapSix/Tigh shippy fic), because I'll just put on my gen glasses if I don't like the pairing. But I definitely have a pet character (I think I have ONE fic where Gaeta isn't a major presence, and it's a Hoshi fic), so if Gaeta's not up your alley, we'll assign each other. I'm TOTALLY fine with either option, and would not be at all offended if you wanted to assign each other. Just cause we're the mods doesn't mean we shouldn't have some fun, too! :)

Why women write slash is totally one of my favorite topics and I could probably chew your ear off about it. I know I got inducted into a women's slash/yaoi community at like, 13 or 14 and have been doing it ever since. I read some good stuff about the origins of it in the Star Trek communities at one point (I guess the very first slash fanfiction was Kirk/Spock).

Someone from said community just suggested a book called Bonk by an author called Mary Roach. I don't know anything about it.

Oh and someone came through. http://www.jmu.edu/writeon/documents/2006/Hinton.pdf is a term paper on the subject with a bibliography? I think. D:

Yeah- I'm totally with you on the sex scenes. Every now and then I'll write them, but when I do, it's usually PWP and I'm in a VERY silly mood. (And it usually reflects it. The two graphic sex stories I've done had Racetrack and Cally catching Gaeta and Skulls in a Raptor, and a very awkward Dee/Billy/Gaeta geek-sex threesome.) I might actually go into a few details, but it's usually still pretty vague. You can figure out what they're doing (or I'll flat-out state it), but I'm not giving details. It especially bugs me in BSG fandom, because there are actors playing the characters. HP fandom it didn't bother me, because I was writing the fic long before Remus and Sirius showed up in the movies, and they aren't MY versions of Remus and Sirius, so it doesn't wig me out.

Here (http://www.livejournal.com/tools/memories.bml?user=musesfool&keyword=on+slash&filter=all) are a whole bunch of metas on slash :) I haven't read through them, but you might be able to sift through and find something to your liking. I'd be more than happy to babble at you as to why I like slash, but I certainly can't speak for a large segment of the population :)

Hope you're able to join as well!!!!

Thanks for the link. I'd heard of a couple of the books mentioned before, and now I think I'm going to have to pick up "Textual Poachers" this summer sometime. The part about the article on yaoi where the author posited that there were three "ages" of slash addressed something that had been bugging me about the other scholarly essays I'd been reading: they all seemed to operate under the assumption that all slash was buddyfic, but there are so many examples--like pretty much anything involving Baltar--that don't seem to fall in that category.

And feel free to chew my ear off about it! One of my favorite parts of fandom is trying to better understand why we fans do the things we do, especially when those things are not what the producers of the original text probably expected or intended.

That's a *lot* of meta! That'll keep me busy for awhile. I was really happy to see some essays relating slash back to the "male gaze" and subverting or at least experimenting with stories told outside those usual limitations--again, an idea that I hadn't seen much in the scholarly articles I read but that came to my mind. It also seems to me to be the best explanation for why slash has a strong fandom presence but there's not much commercial m/m targeted at women (unless there's a slash section in the romance aisle in the bookstore that I just don't know about--I wouldn't be caught dead with a Harlequin paperback, so I don't venture into that territory very often ;).

I do wonder how the relatively recent advent of canon gay pairings in Anglo-American TV and movies affect a lot of the theories behind slash. Anyway, the biggest lesson I've taken away so far is that there's no such thing as a unified theory of slash--lots of people like it for lots of different reasons.

And please, babble away! Like I said to blue_crow, I find the whys and wherefores of fandom fascinating.

I'll have to check out your Jean Barolay fic!
I don't know your feelings about Leoben, but he's a big reason that particular fic ended up so long. (He JUST.WON'T.SHUT.UP. heh.)

But I definitely have a pet character (I think I have ONE fic where Gaeta isn't a major presence, and it's a Hoshi fic), so if Gaeta's not up your alley, we'll assign each other.

Mmm, that does make me think I should get someone else for the remix; he's not a character I've written very much, and I've lost a lot of interest since the end of the mutiny storyline. It was an awesome arc for him, and I'm NOT in the 'hate Gaeta' camp--things were definitely in shades of gray. But right now I'm not even reading most of the stuff being linked to gaeta_squee.

Though possibly I should hold off making up my mind until after I finish the fic that's currently eating my brain I'm writing now. I'll be able to think more clearly then.
(Leoben again. Oops.)
