I wonder if the "commands universal respect" thing isn't meant more as an Adama-ism than Adama making a statement that's supposed to accurately reflect others' opinions. Adama does tend to project his feelings about a person on to everybody else, so "universal respect" could be code for "my respect," which he got for not mutinying.
The other way to look at it might be that Hoshi never really had to choose a side in the mutiny, so neither side hates his guts. That's not exactly "respect," but it's a trait that not too many other characters have at that point.
That said, I like your re-write better. Especially the part about the drastic re-write of "The Woman King."
