A Rewatch Thought

So, I figured I'd look and see if I could glean anything additional about Hoshi off of some of the old episodes. Unfortunately, that meant I rewatched The Captain's Hand, which while far from my least favorite, is definitely in the bottom third.

1.) Hoshi has a mouth on him. He swears several times on deck. Mild, made-for-TV swears, but swears nonetheless. Watching this episode reaffirmed my theory that yes, he does have a very different professional side and personal side. And while I've been writing Narcho as my swearer, it's nice to know Hoshi's not always so clean and sweet.

2.) Dee and Lee have NO chemistry. At least not in this episode. The actors are trying, but it's just not there. Granted, given how their relationship works out, that's not necessarily a bad thing. But Kandyse McClure is SO freaking pretty.

3.) I forgot this was the episode with my favorite ever Starbuck-Apollo line... "You have a brain?" Hee.

4.) It was funny to watch Hoshi knowing he eventually becomes Admiral. And you know, thinking aobut that line about someone people respect, I STILL wonder if that wasn't supposed to be Gaeta, and they changed the person but not the line when they gave Gaeta the mutiny storyline.

5.) Brad Dryborough was officially saddled with the absolute worst haircut on the show. If he's got a wife, I'll bet she giggled every time she saw him with it.

I didn't rewatch the more interesting storyline that they never again did anything with of Laura struggling with the abortion issue, because I really just had it on for something in the background as I cleaned the room.

I miss my show.

Toby started back up at OT today just for general body issues. Apparently, he's got really weak trunk strength, which I kind of knew but then makes me worry that I'm doing something wrong. I'm trying not to think that, because that's not productive. I hate the therapy game. Plus, I had to chase Trevor all over, and try to get him away from whatever Toby's doing.

Ugh. Is it the weekend yet?

Ah, The Captain's Hand.

Full confession: I ship Lee/Dee, and for no good reason except that some of the Lee/Kara shippers really piss me off. Yes, that's an awful reason to ship a pair. I have total sympathy for most Kara/Lee shippers - certainly anyone whose list I normally read, but some of the crazy folk are *awful*. Their crazy starts with Dee bashing and goes (I'm told) to full on racism against Kandyse M. I was so appalled that I started shipping Dee/Lee. But yeah, they got more couple screentime in this episode than almost any other yet their chemistry was never quite right. Except for SAGN. So clearly they weren't incapable of chemistry, it was just a bad directing choice. Or acting choice. Or something.

I wonder about that "someone people respect" line too. Regarding it being for Gaeta, my thought is that the timing doesn't seem right, because if I remember correctly, Juliani was told about the mutiny storyline while he was shooting GWCTD. That had to have been well before Daybreak was written. The line really does fit both Dee and Felix very well, but I think it was just RDM doing a bit of telling-not-showing for Hoshi. (But I love Hoshi, so I'm going with it.)

What I find interesting about Hoshi is an acting choice that Brad D makes - he jumps on his response lines. Watch the pacing between Hoshi's answers to his commanding officers, and any of the other military folk's responses. Hoshi's lines come at a much quicker pace. It makes him seem a little more anxious than the other characters, but it also shows that Hoshi comprehends and reacts very quickly. I can't exactly recall how Brad D paces his lines when he's not on duty - which is basically his scenes with Felix and his scenes in Daybreak - but I think his pace is slower. I like dissecting acting choices. :)

I love Dee (as is evidenced by the fact I'm writing much fic about her), and it makes me sad that the crazies say so much horrible about her. After all, it's LEE that was the one who couldn't figure out what he wanted :) I have a lot less respect for Lee in that relationship than I do for Dee. ::hugs Dee:: I mean, at least Dee came clean with Billy, and broke off with him properly. (Eventually. But still.)

you're probably very right about RDM telling-not-showing with the respect line. (Which is funny, because what we do see of Hoshi in Daybreak is him trying to clean up coffee.) I can't help but think that there was a large percentage of the viewing audience going "WHO?" when they saw him :) (Especially since the haircut REALLY makes a huge difference.)

That's an interesting point about BD's pacing. I hadn't noticed it, but I'd noticed the effect that it makes him seem anxious and competent. (Very much like Seaon 1 Felix, amusingly.) There's so little to go one with Hoshi... which definitely has its advantages at times! ::sigh:: I think all his real development came in the webisodes. Even Daybreak didn't give him much.
