And back to fake life :)
Aug. 2nd, 2005 01:54 pmPimp time!
ignipes wrote a great essay on the whole Terry Pratchett-J.K. Rowling "scandal" that hit the fandom yesterday. It's much more intelligent than what I would have said, which would be "the people who are ticked need to read the actual article that Pratchett is responding to, and hey people? JKR's not perfect. Besides, he never said anything bad about her anyway." (Like I said, her essay is much more eloquent and intelligent, and touches on a lot more points than I just hit.)
Also, two art recs:
nassima drew a lovely version of my least favorite scene in Half Blood Prince here. As always, it's absolutely gorgeous- and even better, it's a colored one. I like Lupin in this one, but I really, really like how she did Fleur. Fleur seems to glow without being overdone or sparkly or silly. And you also must check out the pre-drawing sketch right below it, because... yeah. It fits.
And
buttfacemakani also drew the most ADORABLE version of the Mollywobbles scene here. I really like the humor in her stuff, and this is just too funny and too cute at the same time. I quite like her pic of Rufus there, too. (Although, I must admit that I keep looking for the version that will become Damien. Damien was based on that description, so somewhere out there there has to be a version of Damien that someone's drawn. If anyone sees good fanart of Rufus, could you point me that direction, please?)
A question: has anyone found a place where the art from the Deluxe Edition has been scanned? I'm sure it's not all that legal, but I'd like to see it and it annoys me that they shrink wrap the stupid thing.
There seems to be interest for a Patronus Charm challenge (thanks to
topaz_eyes for the name!). Not an overwhelming amount, but when you look at my LJ and the number of writers I have on my f-list, it's not like I have a huge list. We also found when we did this in Pern that it was something that picked up slowly.
Writing: The fic tentitively titled "Doing It Right" (which won't be the name that sticks) is coming along at a rather scary pace. For a R/T fic, that is. (I still can't believe I'm writing this. So much for my solemnly swears, huh?) Other than that, writing is slow, because I wanted to get out a review for Mutant Reviewers from Hell, and I need to get work accomplished.
And with that in mind.... back to my book. Chemical Applications of Molecular Modelling. Feel the joy.

Remus/Tonks?
Date: 2005-08-02 06:20 pm (UTC)*snicker*
I actually went to a charity shop and bought romance novels today - Nora Roberts, Sandra Brown and another author. If Remus/TOnks are supposed to be romance, I need to go back and see how its really done.
I do have a Remus/Tonks on my PC right now, and it's bitter and biting. It's a touch character sketch... even for me.
I'll like to see it when you're done.

Date: 2005-08-02 06:27 pm (UTC)I know how you feel with writing R/T - am trying to get myself into exploring it and have some bits and pieces written waiting to be joined together.
I'm on the horns of a dilema myself, because my fic in the Lupin/Tonks ficathon means I have to turn my entire vision of the pups upside down.
Like you, it's a pairing I never thought I'd write (although I have written a bit of het Remus before).
Sigh. Worlds change. Just make sure that your offspring is fully aware of the one true way.
Re: Remus/Tonks?
Date: 2005-08-02 06:27 pm (UTC)I'm doing it exclusively Remus's pov, and it's definitely not the great love story of all time, although it's not too evil on either of their parts. And naturally, it's post Remus/Sirius. But I think more than anything it's catharsis- maybe if I can write it RIGHT with what she's given us, I won't hate it so much. ;) (Thus the title.)
I'll definitely show (it's actually for the

Date: 2005-08-02 06:33 pm (UTC)It's kind of a bizarre pairing. It's actually rather hard to make work, but I can't tell if that's my shipping preferences or the characters (I'd like to think both!). But I can cheat. I DON'T have to turn the boys upside down for mine, and the artist I'm working with actually likes both ships. (Actually, it's HER fault ;) She posted a very, very well-done sketch of Remus and Tonks, and whenever I see a well-done artwork... ::sigh:: I write. So SHE started it. Heh.)
The funny thing is, I was going to have Remus realize he's bi in an AiL outtake. There's a story there from the Lost Years that I know (and is hinted at in another fic), where he actually does hook up with a woman. I have the best idea from doing it from Sirius's pov, where the woman tells him everything and then later miscarries in Azkaban.... But I'd better finish the main story first ;)

Date: 2005-08-02 11:38 pm (UTC)BTW A new member on Immeritus (LupineAura) asked me to say that she's been admiring your posts on Immy and has sent you a PM. :)
Oh and is there any chance you could send me your email address so as I can contact you without going via LJ? (moonanddogstar @yahoo.co.uk)

Date: 2005-08-02 11:48 pm (UTC)Funny thing is, I actually wrote that whole thing before checking out the fandom responses over on Mugglenet and the like. I think it would have been much more of a rant and less of an essay if I'd seen what those idiots were saying beforehand. :)

Date: 2005-08-02 11:59 pm (UTC)Thanks for the heads up. I actually won't be able to get the PM regardless, because I haven't sorted out the login issues over there. :P I know I should, but I'm so freaking lazy at this point... ::sigh:: And I'm kind of afraid to go back there, because I'll get sucked back in, and I need to cut down on my net time ::sigh::. And definitely on the email address- drliss @comcast.net :)

Date: 2005-08-03 12:02 am (UTC)It's probably better that you did write it before you checked out the fandom response. I looked at the response on Leaky Cauldron because I thought "oooh, I'll bet this is going to tick people off", and yup. A lot of people ranting about how Terry Pratchett is jealous and doesn't compare to JKR. (Although, to be fair, there were a lot of people ranting about how the phrasing of the news items on TLC and other places made it sound like Pratchett was ranting at JKR when he was really upset about the Time article, and thought that he was very unfairly represented and people needed to get a grip and actually read everything involved.)
And he did have a point. There's no way HP can't at least fall into the genre of fantasy ;)
