You know, there are some days that ice cream really does make everything better.
I see TWOP hated last night's Fringe episode. Me? I LOVED it.
First of all, I love Ella and Rachel and I wish we saw more of them. I LOVE Ella's relationship with Olivia. I'd like to think Olivia doesn't actually want kids of her own, but it is so clear that she adores being an auntie to one of the cutest kids ever on TV. And I actually kind of like the idea of Peter/Rachel. (I like the idea of any option BUT Peter/Olivia.) So I was just as happy to see Emma and Rachael again. And the babysitting trope can be amusing, especially since Olivia asked Astrid, not Walter. Granted, that kind of meant poor Astrid was babysitting two kids (Ella was easier, I'm sure), but hey.
And then Walter getting stoned out of his mind and telling a story? That was really... Walter. I liked that. (Although only Walter would kill off the kid's mother in a story. Sheesh.
With two notable exceptions, the musical aspect kind of fell flat after a bit (which you can also put up to Walter's buzz wearing off). Astrid's little Chorus Line moment was well-sung (can someone PLEASE give that girl more screen time?), and Broyles's sex appeal went from "meh" to "off the charts." And the singing fit his character, so even if everything else was cut, that could have been kept.
That said, the 40's film noir thing? TOTALLY WORKED for me. Especially Olivia. It was clear that Anna Torv was having a blast with her part, and I loved that they kept her very "masculine" in her behavior. (Also, hello Olivia/Astrid vibes, which although I prefer them as friends, I could handle that.) Anna Torv looked AMAZING, and the film noir thing really fit the show. And as long as she wasn't singing, the film noir really fit her acting, too. (Actually, I've also liked her in the Pacific. I think Anna Torv was born 70 years too late in some ways.) Olivia and Astrid completely stole the show. And the anachronisms cracked me up.
Anyway, I suspect this one's very polarizing, but I loved it. Plus, it had singing corpses.
You know, there's a lot I like about Fringe, and what it's doing within the genre. Like BSG, it really has played some havoc with gender roles. Olivia is cold, logical, a great shot, and all about work, whereas Peter is the people person and intuitive and has a gift for getting people to trust him. Nina Sharps runs Massive Dynamic, rather than a guy. And I still think (even more so) that Astrid and Gaeta need to go out for drinks together. Between their roles, their hair, and their voices, this just needs to happen. Also, I really am liking the relationship between Walter and Astrid. A bit Adama and Dee-ish, and hopefully, the Fringe writers won't let me down there. And Walter... he annoyed me at first, but they've toned him down a bit and we've gotten more of his darkness, and I'm loving it.
Although, please. Just NO Olivia/Peter. They have no chemistry together as lovers, but they totally do as friends, and there's nothing wrong with that. Hook Olivia up with anyone. Hook Peter up with anyone. Just don't go for the cliche... it will be BAD. Thank you, writers.
So, yeah. Really liking Fringe these days. (I might need to get me a Fringe icon.) Still need to catch up on last week's LOST- I think we're going to watch that tomorrow night. Tonight might be Avatar, which I have yet to see.
got my fest fic back from
kappamaki33, so I should be doing some serious editing, as my posting date is tomorrow. I have to confess, I'm really glad to post tomorrow. For one, I'm glad this fic is off my plate. I like it- a lot, actually- but it was a hard one to write, and I'm eager to get on to some other stuff. And for two, I like posting early in a fest, when interest is still high. Granted, if a fic is good it will still get read, and some fics are going to get a sparse audience regardless, but still.
Okay. I should edit before the kids come down. I really want to take a nap (Trevor was up several times last night), but I only have 40 minutes and Toby's not napping today, which means he'll be down when he said he'll be down. So, onward!
