May. 21st, 2010 09:13 pmGorgeous day out today. The kids played out on the slip and slide until Trevor got so tired he wanted to play but all he could do was cry. I felt bad for him, and he fell asleep almost the second he was in his bed for his nap. But he was having so much fun keeping up with the big boys! (Toby had a friend over.)
Can it be Sunday already? Well, not Sunday, but remix! I'm so excited.

Day 06 - Favorite episode of your favorite TV show

My favorite BSG characters: Gaeta, Tyrol, Tigh, Anders (Dee, Cally, and Ellen, but they aren't in this.)
My Kara pairing of choice: Kara/Sam, partly because she's so messed up and he gets her.
My favorite BSG arc: New Caprica
One of my utter loves in stories: how big, nasty events mess people up in their lives after.
Another one of my loves: moral shades of gray, but the right thing happening in the end.
One of my favorite Adama lines: "Keep jumping."
Is it any surprise at all that Collaborators is my all-time favorite BSG episode, despite the fact it's depressing as hell? Great writing, great acting, and very understated in a lot of spots. (Like that least scene, between Tyrol and Gaeta? ::heart breaks::)
I just still wish the show had addressed the fact that Zarek once ordered Gaeta's death.

Hmm, I love all of this, but I don't think I'd name the ep as a favorite. Interesting!

Date: 2010-05-22 02:12 am (UTC)You know, it would have been nice if A Disquiet Follows My Soul had followed Collaborators format more in showing various fractions like the marines and some viper pilots deciding to join Gaeta for their own reasons, not all of which were of good intent

Date: 2010-05-22 02:42 am (UTC)Torn is set about a month later - Kara's nuts, Tigh's a drunk, Gaeta's a wreck - but 13 people died & what - no one came looking for them? There was no controversy in keeping 1 of the killers as the XO (granted in name more than reality at that point), keeping another one as chief of the deck (and that wasn't in name), keeping another as a hand, and three others on Galactica. You couldn't even figure out if it was generally known that Gaeta was the inside man and had saved everyone. It's like they started this really great story and then dropped it with a 'just teasing' shrug and moved onto the god awful quadrangle of doom instead of dealing with the PTSD and everyone sort of falling apart.
It left me with very mixed feelings. I suspect the writers saw Collaborators as the end of the New Caprica Arc with Torn through Unfinished Business as a bridge, but since they got caught up in the quadrangle and everyone else's issues except Gaeta's in those episodes there ended up being this huge hole in the season 3 storyline. It made the entire Season 4 Demetrius/Cylon alliance/mutiny arc a lot more bitter, because they completely ignored that Gaeta might have reasonable rational trust issues with his cohort on-board (hey, Starbuck, Barolay, and Seelix nearly threw him out an airlock & Anders who knew, did nothing to prevent it). I just kept comparing the depth of story telling post-Collaborators to earlier BSG and found it mostly wanting.

Date: 2010-05-22 02:59 am (UTC)I assumed that Bill made it a policy to never officially find out who the Circle was made up of. (I wish we'd seen how he found out about Gaeta, too.) So, if he didn't know, he could just turn a blind eye. I suspect he figured that living with the guilt of what they'd done would be major punishment.
And I really wish we'd seen a bit more of Gaeta and Tigh post airlock, too.
Lesson of the day: less quadrangle, more REAL angst, thanks! :)

Uh, yes - really that's a huge issue, because it really seemed that Tigh directly supervised Gaeta.
I also missed seeing the Dee-Gaeta buddy scenes - they cut the best one (argh) and really didn't give us much friendship scenes. It's weird, but Gaeta ran the mutiny with Zarek (who tried to kill him) and Noel (who I don't think ever had a single scene with Gaeta). He dated Hoshi - who was the guy from Pegasus who occasionally showed up on Galactica's CIC. You really need to do your The Woman King rewrite. It would still be canon compliant, but it might make canon make sense.

Date: 2010-05-22 05:19 am (UTC)Oh, Collaborators, I totally agree with you. I started BSG with S3, and this was the episode that sealed the deal for me. I didn't even know all the character history, and I still was on the edge of my seat. It was so intense.
I can't lie, there was a bitter part of me that wanted Felix to say, "Look, buddy, thanks for not killing me and all, but right now we are on a friend break. Friend. Break. Thanks." But yeah, I get what Tyrol was trying to do, so...
Even a throwaway line! Someone acknowledging that Zarek had been cool with chuck Felix out an airlock! (I mean, there would have been bonus points to actually seeing Felix react to that, but by 4.5, we could only ask so much.)

I agree, though frankly it's amazing that the aftermath of New Caprica was given as much weight as it was. Especially considering the hindsight we have now, of how much impact the mutiny had. (I don't think I'll ever get over being angry and bitter about that.)
