What scares him far more is a meaningless death. This brings him even closer to Laura since Bill accused her of having the same fear.
I think it would have changed a great deal if Laura had been in love with Tom instead of Bill, true, not for Tom and his actions but for how things in season 3 and 4 involved. Many actions were solely based on Bill and Laura being so damn close. I like them (Bill and Laura) being in love, but they acted a lot out of those personal feelings. How could they not? They were just human. I don't think Bill would have listened to Laura quite so often if she had been involved with Tom. They would have uphold their deal from the beginning: Bill = military, Laura = civilians. But with them being involved during and after NC their territories intermingled. Bill didn't run from NC like he'd done in the Miniseries albeit Lee reminded him that this was the only logical thing to do. I got the impression Lee mentioning "Roslin" only confirmed Bill's plan to go back to NC.
But yeah, I agree- Tom is such a gray character. I think everybody is and not only their characters but each of their actions as well. What I like to no end about BSG is the irony of fate. Change just one little action and their journey would have taken a very different path to whatever end - or to the same end. Who knows.
I haven't heard of either interpretation until now. But what I thought about Tom was a mixture of both interpretations. Tom wants power without a doubt otherwise he wouldn't have pushed Baltar for settling on NC. And Tom is an idealist and wants to see his ideals come to pass. He wants democracy only when he gets it (the Quorum not confirming him) he doesn't want that democracy because it's against his believes. At least he stays true to his believes: The Cylons are the enemy and they don't negotiate or ally with the enemy. I think the difference between Gaeta and Zarek is that Zarek wants his ideals come true and thinks the ending justifies the means. Whereas Gaeta has his ideals and does even want to go the "right" way to make them come true.
and realized that to achieve his ideals, he had to take routes he might not have wanted to take Cain said that in a similar way to Kendra in Razor, that they have to unbelievable things to be able to become human again.
Erm, no, I don't think about this way too much :) Me neither. ^^
