Today is Veteran's Day in America, where we honor those that fought for our country, and we remember the sacrifice that they made for our rights and freedoms.

It's a bit of a surprise to me every time I think about it, but I come from a military family. So thank you to all my family, who have all been touched by the military in some way....

Thank you to my grandfather who manned the rat trap in a fighter plane in WWII.

Thank you to my grandfather who- I think- was something of a chaplain during WWII. There's a reason he won't talk about the war.

Thank you to my grandmother, who is one of the most inspiring women I know and who served in New Guinea in the Nurses' Corps during WWII and then spent years nursing at a V. A. Hospital.

Thank you to my uncle, who attended Annapolis, went to Vietnam on a gun boat, and spent his later years working in the Pentagon.

Thank you to my other uncle, who went ROTC through college and then served his country in Vietnam, diving in rivers to dismantle mines.

Thank you to my father, who enlisted in Air Force for Vietnam but never had to go overseas, and then spent 19 years in the Air Force National Guard. He served until he died.

Thank you to both my mother and my grandmother, who knew what it meant to be a soldier's wife and supported my father and grandfather through their service.

Thank you to my cousin who served in the Navy.

Thank you to my cousin who still serves in the Navy, who risked more than just his life in Afghanistan and other places in the world, and who is now a flight school instructor.

Thank you to my brother, who might be being a complete jerk, but served at least some time in the Air Force.

Thank you to my sister, who is a nurse in a Veteran's Association Hospital- largely thanks to my grandmother's lead.

Thank you to all of the people who worked with me on my grad school project, designing supersonic jet fuels for the Air Force.

And thank you, to anyone who's served in any way.

As a final note, for anyone who hasn't seen it yet, I would encourage you to go see Jarhead today. It's an interesting portrayal of what it means to be in the service today.
