It's 5:45 in the morning, and I am seeing if Toby will go back to sleep. This is such an awkward time- he's had a good 7 hours of sleep, but he is still a bit tired. How long do I let him cry at this hour, y'know? I did feed and change him, but I don't want to let him cry it out for two hours.

We began the crying it out-Ferber campaign Friday night. I wasn't going to, because we were going to have company. But when I put Toby down, he woke up and started crying. Overtired, truthfully. So we began. It took him an hour and a half, but he slept through the night.

Saturday night it took ten minutes.

Last night, he fell asleep before I put him in his crib. But he did wake up twice in the night, fussed for five minutes, and fell back asleep. Success!

The 5 AM thing right now is really awkward, like I said. The crying it out thing really only works well if they're truly tired, and while I think Toby could stand to sleep more, he's also been in bed since 9 PM. I think I'll let him go until 6, and if he doesn't stop, I'll get him up and we'll play. Maybe he'll go down for a nap after his next feeding or two or something, and I can take a nap as well. (He's had a good 7.5-8 hours sleep, but I've only had six.) The only thing I don't want to do is cuddle him until he goes to sleep. That will just undo everything we've done.

::Sigh:: Babies and sleep.

If he's been down for close to eight hours, it might be legitimate - like a need for a diaper change. You're right that it's an awkward time of the morning, but he's definitely improved. That's cool!

Yeah. I changed him (his diaper was soaked) and fed him- he took four ounces, which is a good feeding for him in the morning- before I even tried to let him cry it out. We tried crying for a bit, and then I got him up and we played on my bed. He fell back asleep for a bit, but he's up again. But still- just the fact he went back to sleep the first two times, when he really DID need the sleep... I'll take what I can get. Kids getting up at 5 wanting to play is far from unheard of!
