Pimp and Bottle
Jan. 3rd, 2007 03:55 pmI'm sure many of you will appreciate this little gen fic: Pretending to Be Human, where
mysid has clearly had enough of chocoholic!Remus. Great premise and really heart-tugging, and I know a lot of my f-list gets tired of this cliche, too :)
We're still going through the "eat like a big boy" battles with Toby. He's still refusing to eat table food on the whole. The doctor still insists it's a silent tantrum, and maybe it is, but I can't bring myself to use his method of present the baby with table food only and if he doesn't eat it, nothing else. I agree with the principle, mind you. If Toby doesn't eat the baby food we give him, he doesn't get another option. But I do think expecting him to suddenly up and eat table food instead of jarred is too much to expect- too big a jump.
We've had progress. We've finally gotten him to eat Stage 3 foods. (You would think he'd prefer my cooking to those. I am a good cook and those are disgusting. It's very humbling that he does not.) He'll eat Spaghetti-O's. Chocolate chip cookies, Ritz crackers, Nutrigrain bars, muffins, and biter biscuits have joined animal crackers, graham crackers, fruit-flavored Cheerios and puffs in things he's willing to eat. No mac and cheese, though. Nothing else. He's still clinging to his baby food. :P
We've also begun pushing the cup hardcore. He's capable of drinking out of it- he just chooses not to. So, one bottle is completely gone, replaced by a cup. If he wants milk, he must drink it from the cup. I'm hoping that by the end of the week, he'll be cooperating with that. We'll see.
::sigh:: But on the bright side, he says both Mommy and Daddy now :) Nothing melts your heart like hearing that!

Date: 2007-01-04 01:42 am (UTC)Two has been much more sensitive to textures than her sister - it's probably why Toby prefers Stage 3 mush to "real" food. Just keep presenting a bite of "real" food - whatever you're having - on his tray when you feed him whatever else he's having. That way, he's continually exposed to the items, over and over, with no particular pressure - and eventually, he'll try it. If we'd given up and hadn't continued to put a bite of "Yeah, I know you don't like it, but here it is anyway" foods on her plate, Two wouldn't be eating eggs, apples, carrots, or half the stuff that's in her present diet. It just took her a hell of a lot longer to get used to them, and we still encounter similar issues with new foods now. Sounds like he's at least making progress!
And yay for talking! ♥

Date: 2007-01-06 04:25 pm (UTC)Thanks for the advice on the textures issue. I do think textures is a lot of it! I've also, for some reason I can't define, had the impression that the incisor he's cutting has been particularly painful. My mom has the theory that he'll be much more receptive to food once he's got eight teeth. (Hope she's right!) We'll keep at it!

Date: 2007-01-04 02:31 am (UTC)The preference for bottle over cup is nearly universal, but stick to your guns and he'll accept it before you know it.
Thanks for the pimpage! Now I know why so many people found my new story.

Date: 2007-01-06 04:27 pm (UTC)And we're sticking to it! We may change our approach a bit, but that morning bottle is gone, whether he likes it or not!
And you're welcome- I really enjoyed that story. :)

Date: 2007-01-04 04:33 am (UTC)I can't believe Toby's old enough to be eating table food. You're right about the Mommy and Daddy. It's wonderful to hear Elizabeth say "Uh-Cuh" (her version of Aunt Jessica). :-D
