It's March 15. Remix stories are due in about one month. Why won't mine move? ::kicks Remix:: (ETA: YAY! Daughtry just doubled the length. Daughtry makes awesome writing music.) I'd better get my butt in gear on AIL13 too, because March will fly by. ::Grumble::

I'm grumpy today. I broke my Lenten resolution last night, which is annoying (a few tablespoons of cold hot fudge and 4 mini Hershey's bars. Oops.). I'm tired, and I don't know why since I got a good 7-8 hours of sleep last night and Toby has been absolutely fine. American Idol sucked last night because WOW was it BORING, except when Ryan actually got the better of Simon for a change. And I need to make something for fellowship supper, although I won't be surprised if I stop at the store and pick up some bread or something. I was going to make chedder and scallion puffs, but am seriously tempted to make soda bread instead, given how close it is to St. Patty's. No one will quibble if I bring fresh baked bread, I'm sure.

Anyway. Ficlet. Enjoy!

Title: Daddy's Girl
Prompt: from [livejournal.com profile] snorkackcatcher, Why Lily didn't get into trouble with the Ministry for turning teacups into rats. (also fits for one of [livejournal.com profile] shaggydogstail's prompts.)

"Lily!" her father yelled. "One of those dratted owls is here!"

Lily sat bolt upright on her bed. "I can't believe it," she muttered. "Don't go anywhere," she told the rat in the shoebox. "I'll be back." She closed the door firmly behind her.

"It's for me!" she called, thundering down the stairs. "I'll get it! I'll get it!"

She was brought up short by the sight of Petunia, letter in hand, standing at the bottom of the steps, a smug grin on her face. "Too late," she told Lily.

"Give me that!"

Petunia held it over her head. "Come and get it. Or even better, magic it from me. But oh, I forgot. You can't do that, can you?"

"Petunia!" Lily lunged for the letter, but Petunia side-stepped her.

"'Dear Miss Evans'," Petunia read loudly. "'We have received intelligence that a teacup was Transfigured at your place of residence this afternoon at thirty three minutes past two..' That would be about when you dangled that filthy rodent in my face, wouldn't it Lily? 'As you know, underage wizards are not permitted to perform spells outside school, and further spellwork on your part may lead to expulsion from said school.'"

"Give it back!" Lily shouted, and grabbed a good handful of Petunia's hair. Petunia screeched.

The girls were flung apart by two very firm hands. "What's going on here?" their father demanded. Lily opened her mouth to answer, but Petunia beat her to it.

"Lily's in trouble," she announced. "She's not supposed to do magic outside of school, and she did. See?" She handed her father the letter. He read it carefully.

"Lily? Is this true?"

Lily thought quickly. "Well, yes. But it's not that serious."

"Expulsion sounds serious enough," he said, looking at her from under lowered brows.

"Well, yes. But Dad, it wasn't like the letter makes it sound. I was doing my homework."

"Ha!" Petunia spat. "You were not! And besides, why would a teacher assign magic if magic isn't allowed?"

"She does have a point, Lily."

"Well, Professor McGonagall didn't assign it exactly," Lily admitted. "But I was doing my Transfiguration reading, and Dad, it's just so interesting! And my tea cup was right there and I just had to know if I was understanding it right. I didn't even think about the consequences!" She was pleased that she was managing to force wet eyes. "I was just so excited! I know I should have thought more, but Daddy, I promise you, I didn't mean to break the law!"

Their father softened visibly. "Well," he said. "That's very admirable of you, Lily. Yes, you should be more careful, but I'll write a letter to this Ministry here. I'm sure they'll understand. And Petunia, you should take a lesson from Lily, here. This sort of enthusiasm in your studies would get you both very far." With that he took the letter and headed towards the kitchen, muttering about finding a pen.

"I don't believe you!" Petunia hissed.

Lily smiled sweetly. "But Dad does. If you'll excuse me, I have a rat to take care of."

Bwahahahaha!

Yeah- I've often wondered if maybe it isn't all Petunia's fault that she's bitter at Lily.... Every story has three sides, and I think that's especially true for sibling relationships!

Cute explanation. :D And I can totally see Petunia dancing around and singing "Lily's in trooouubble".

Thanks!

I can too. I totally based this on me and my sister. I'm sure we would have done this if, y'know, one of us had had magic!

Brilliant. You really nailed the whole sibling-rivalry thing and I loved who easily Lily wriggled out of trouble.
