May. 31st, 2008 02:31 pm1. I SO wish I could talk about the fic I'm writing for the
rs_games. Have I mentioned how much I hate anonymity? But seriously, I am SO psyched about this one. It's one I've wanted to write since November 1, 2006. I'm dying here! I keep spamming
teamposthogwarts, but I'm afraid to drive everyone there nuts. But I haven't been this excited about a writing project in a while. Okay, lie. I really had fun with Remix this year, and I really enjoyed doing my first
rs_games fic, too. Anyone figured out which one I wrote for that yet? :)
BTW-
rynne, I owe you a ficlet for guessing my Remix, as you're the only one who formally guessed. Prompt?
I do think I'm going to have to cut scenes though. I'm getting a rambling feeling. :P
2. We watched the Lost finale last night. Finally, we're getting somewhere! I KNEW it was Locke in the casket! I knew it! And I knew they'd get found by Penny's boat! Two for two, without peeking at spoilers! Oh, yeah. I'm good. (Not really. It's pretty rare I guess it like that.)
I liked Juliet's Dharma brand booze. It amused me, as did the look on her face when Sawyer swam shirtless out of the ocean. Jack who?
They can have as much assassin!Sayid as they want, as far as I'm concerned. And that fight between him and the Rambo dude? (Thanks, Hurley.) Oh, that was AWESOME choreography. Have you ever seen Naveen Andrews outside of Lost though? It's really funny to hear his British accent.
Sun broke my heart. I hope Jin's not really dead, but I'm afraid he might be. Which sucks, because I love Jin. Funny, because I didn't when the show started. He's an awesome character. And Jin-Michael... my favorite line is still "Picking up on a little Korean there, Michael?" "Yeah, I'm pretty sure I know how to say "faster" and "idiot"." I miss first season. First season was KICKASS.
I do feel like I need to rewatch. One thing about Lost is they leave plotlines dangling too long, so when they answer questions you almost forget they were asked. It's also interesting that I'm almost feeling sympathetic to the Others. I liked the goodbye scene between Ben and Locke. (I am also betting money that there is Ben/Locke slash out there, but I don't want to read it.)
3. We're still playing catchup on BSG. I'm now betting on Gaeta being the last Cylon, with Zarek as my runner-up. I just can't get the girls as interesting possibilities. I don't want Starbuck to be a Cylon, or Roslin, and Dee is too boring, and Cally... nah. And those are the most interesting girls. Plus, I don't like Tory at all. :P
I'm loving BSG, but I find that Lee Adama bores me. And Lee/Starbuck bores me. Probably because I love Sam, and I'd go for him over Lee any day. But it doesn't matter, because there is Roslin/Papadama, and they are my OTP. However, it's odd, but do you know who I would probably be crushing on if I was single and on Galactica? Gaeta. He fits my type exactly- smart, a bit cocky about it, a bit of a geek, and brave in a specific way. Just like Simon would be my Firefly crush.
I think we're going to do Golden Compass tonight, but I look forward to more BSG. And Howard's home all week, so maybe we'll catch up.
4. The 800-word prequel from JKR- that's kind of cool. I like to think she's not deliberately trying to screw over any one section of fandom, and am seriously rooting for James and Sirius on the motorbike and being pulled over for speeding and then flying away. Hijinks ahoy! It would not surprise me if I am right, but it also would not surprise me if I am wrong.
I hope they put out another good sci-fi show sometime. We're almost out of episodes. :P
Oh! I know what I was going to ask. I want to make a sci-fi/fantasy mix- songs that have been used for sci-fi fantasy stuff (or are about it). Anyone have any great suggestions? My list is pretty short so far- "All Along the Watchtower" by Bob Dylan, "Keep Holding On" by Avril Lavaigne, "Storybook Love" by Mark Knopfler, and the song at the end of Prince Caspian, which was pretty cool. Oh, and "Blood of a King", which I don't remember where I got it from but was an awesome fencing/workout song when I used to fence. Other suggestions?
BTW-

Date: 2008-05-31 09:37 pm (UTC)The JKR short story. Let's just say that I want to collectively smack fandom silly for being so. bloody. whiny. The whole 'trying to screw over fandom' and 'she's going to ruin my fanfic' wah wah wah. ARGH! JKR doesn't care about our fanfic, and she's not sitting there gleefully rubbing her hands together and setting out to foil Sirius slashers. She doesn't even give out extraneous information without having been asked a question BY A FAN (or a reporter) who wanted to know something. (i.e. the Dumbledore is gay bit, Draco's wife, etc.) She wrote a short story for charity because they asked her to write something, and that was the idea she came up with. A short story about HER characters, the way SHE sees them.
Such a horrible crime, that. Because, you know, we don't write stories about her characters the way WE see them. No, not at all.
I... um, yeah. Sorry for ranting. It just drives me a bit mad. All the complaining about how she didn't write enough about X in the books, and then when she does write/say something, it's all "oh, I wish she hadn't written/said X!"
Here's a few Sci Fi/Fantasy related songs. At least the ones I could think of off the top of my head. Battle of Evermore is a cover of the Led Zep song, and it's about LotR. (I like the Heart (a/k/a The Lovemongers) version better. :-P The Runner was in the movie The Philadelphia Experiment with Michael Pare and Nancy Allen. Mordred's Lullaby is about, well Mordred :-P King Arthur and all that good stuff. It's an awesome song. And Don't Fear the Reaper was used in Stephen King's The Stand.
As for R/S Games... I'm just glad I was able to pick a prompt. :-P I'm so behind on reading, but since we can't vote anyway, I'm going to wait until I'm done writing. I can't read fics while I'm writing, especially ones that might contain similar ideas to what I'm planning to write.

Date: 2008-06-01 06:01 pm (UTC)But I totally understand your venting. It's not JKR that's making me dread this prequel- it's the fandom reaction. While I admit I miss a bit of good old fashioned HP-fandom-wank, the canon police drive me nuts. Especially with R/S. It's the one ship where there's so much gloating on either side, instead of people just gleefully shipping whatever the hell they want to ship. Well, the one ship I care about, since I've never cared that much about the kid ships. JKR could write the sky was blue and there'd be a small but vocal percentage of fandom that would complain.
Thanks for the song recs!
I'm glad you were able to pick a prompt, too! I'm behind reading as well, especially with the fic I'm working on. It's flowing too much and is way too long, but what else is new with me? :) I'm still not sure it falls into one of the genres though :P

Date: 2008-06-02 01:41 am (UTC)Yes, that's it. I mean, I love fandom, but sometimes I just want to collectively smack it over the head.
For the prompts, I told Brighty I was adding /Drama to the Angst prompt. (I mean, if they're combining Fluff/Romance, I want Angst/Drama!) So hey - go ahead and make up your own genre! Or use mine. :-P I'm still waiting to hear if I need to do a round one pinch hit or not. *headdesk* Either way I should get working on my round two fic, but this week was just too much to even think about writing anything.

Date: 2008-06-06 09:39 pm (UTC)I'm thinking of just putting together a mix CD and sending it to you. How do you feel about scores? I'm partial to them myself, and could produce a whole CD of just good score tracks from various fantasy/scifi I've liked. One thing which will surely be on it: The Hero of Canton (along with the Firefly and Serenity Themes, I'm thinking). :-)

Date: 2008-06-09 06:16 pm (UTC)I'm impartial to scores. They fit my mood sometimes, but I tend to like things I can sing along with. (Especially since part of the goal is to convert my boys to geekdom. HAHAHAHAHAHAAH!)
The Hero of Canton is one of the best sci-fi songs ever :)
