lls_mutantOkay, I'm totally in the minority. I liked it.
Gaeta's secret was getting to Final Cylon proportions in that nothing was really going to be good and juicy enough for us, and still be believable. So this worked for me. The secret being that Baltar knew the Eight was killing all the people Gaeta was getting her to save? Yeah. That really worked for me.
One of the biggest themes of Gaeta's character is that he IS blind when he sees something he should hope for. He follows Adama, without question, even when he's GOT to have figured out a long time ago that Adama has no clue where Earth is. He believes whole heartedly in Baltar, long past when he should. Even at the very end, in Exodus II, he STILL thinks that Baltar will do the right thing. He's the first to trust Sharon. In my world, it's why he trusts Tom Zarek so implicitly- I even had Dee call him on it. ("Oh no. Felix, come on. Not another Baltar!"
He closed his eyes, because even just the name was like briars being dragged over his raw soul. "I'm not in love with Zarek."
"No, but somewhere on New Caprica you decided he was a good guy, and now you're completely blind.") And now this. It's consistent with Gaeta's character. I'm all about this.
Interestingly, I think we also got confirmation that Gaeta tends more towards the gay than the bi side of things. The Eight says something like "I'm a woman, and a Cylon. I didn't seduce you, you seduced yourself." From that, I take it she knew he was gay, and was kind of surprised this even worked. This was total Stockholm's. Also, he never said the L-word, which pleased me. I also got the impression she really didn't like him all that much.
I can't blame Gaeta for what happened. He was cut off from most people, I'm sure. But more than that, she let some people go. When he was seeing some of them around, how can you blame him? That was a masterful stroke on her part, and I'm really glad the writers put that in there to explain, or it would have made much less sense. I have to say, if I'd been Gaeta, I probably would have done the same thing. It must be a terrible thing to get your mind to process.
With all this, I can not at all blame him for how he treated Hoshi at the end, and basically saying goodbye. I do think they've left the door open on their personal feelings, and that Gaeta's not leaving Hoshi because he doesn't care. I just think he's decided that he can't drag Hoshi down this path, and that this is pretty much suicide. I feel bad for Hoshi, but with the shit that's going through Gaeta's mind... Hoshi, sweetie, remember him at his best, and he'll be waiting for you on the other side. Because I REALLY think Felix is gonna die.
Finally, the lessons of the webisodes:
1.) If you want to live, give Felix a gun.
2.) If you want to die, give him a small, sharp, pointy object.
3.) Felix should stop watching reruns of Buffy the Vampire Slayer at the tactical station on slow days.
4.) But before he does that... Felix, here's a pencil. Go get the Lycans, please.

I will mind so much less if he comes back as a head!Felix to Baltar :) (Actually, truthfully, I don't mind much at all. I know he's going to make it pretty far, and I'm prepared for everyone to die.)

Date: 2009-01-07 07:51 pm (UTC)I know we've been assuming that Zarek is the "Him" that Hoshi refers to but I'm thinking...could it be Baltar? Maybe the 'resturaunts shaped like food' scene comes before the Gaeta-Zarek rebellion. Maybe that's why Baltar is the one who tries to communicate with Felix later, because they've already spoken about their issues.

Date: 2009-01-08 12:55 pm (UTC)Hey- I had an exciting (potentially) thought this morning. Remember the io9 interview? The one that Juliani did right after 4.18? He mentioned in that interview that the writers found a way to bring up the Whisper of Doom and tie that up again. So he's known since then that that was the case.
Of course, it might have been originally worked into the series and then cut for time, and after that comment worked into the webisodes. (I still haven't figured out when the webisodes were written compared to when shooting/editing was completed.) But we may see something relating to the webisodes in the final 10 episodes? (::still holds out hope for some indication of Hoshi and Gaeta together, even if it's just their picture on the Memorial Wall::)

Agreed. Everybody would have fallen for that. Except maybe Starbuck but that's solely because Starbuck is Starbuck. Same goes for Adama.
Incidentally, this whole denial / only seeing what you want to see? Isn't that big a deal. Everybody does it, not just Gaeta. I had the doubtful pleasure of writing multiple graduation finals on that very subject. Our memory doesn't have the task to remember the truth. It has the task to remember what we need to perceive as the truth in order to keep our integrity as a person. If you want to go really scientific about it, Gaeta cannot even have remembered the "truth" in that raptor. He just fabricated a memory based upon what the Eight told him on the fly.

Date: 2009-01-08 12:59 pm (UTC)What baffles me is that I'm seeing theories on the web (which should explain it right there) how the Eight was a hero, and her killing all these people kept Cavil from killing even more, and she was really doing it for the good of humanity. And she was only confessing all this to Felix because she truly loved him and wanted him to kill her so he could have all the air.

LOL! That's the best. Except I think you need silver bullets for Lycans. But Gaeta: Rogue Lycan Hunter is a show I'd like to watch anyway. :-)
