So, two hours til new BSG, and the boys are in bed. YAY! Thanks to everyone who commented on my eating hospital post, btw. I'm trying to get around to answering comments, but it's been a bit crazy. Not bad- just crazy. So now I am totally feeling the need to unwind just answering a fun little meme. You've seen it:

Comment to this post and I will give you 5 subjects/things I associate with you. Then post this in your LJ and elaborate on the subjects given.

Gaeta/Zarek. Well, we all know I like playing with Gaeta and Zarek, and in Youth's Final Luxury I write them as very father and son type. I've said it before, but I think they're very much the same man at different points in his life. I can totally believe that if the mutiny had succeeded, Gaeta would have become very much like Zarek- an idealist ready to use most means to accomplish his lofty ends. And I can also very much believe that Zarek looks at Gaeta and sees himself, at the beginning of his journey.

The slash, indicating romantic relationship, however, is very interesting. While my preferred dynamic is definitely the father son one, I'd be totally lying if I said I never wrote them that way. (Amusingly, both those ficlets have Felix springing Tom from the brig.)

I'm of a few minds about the slash idea of it. On the one hand, having Zarek and Gaeta be lovers in the plotline they got together would have gotten a huge rise out of the gay community. (Although to be honest, I didn't see them as villains as much as antagonists. And I think enough straight characters (Laura "Babystealer" Roslin, Sharon "LieaboutCavil" Agathon, Saul "Suicidebombers" Tigh) do pretty terrible things that Gaeta committing mutiny over something he believed in- and Tom too, but Tom also slaughtered the Quorum- is pretty in line with how BSG operates.) But more than that on the con side, one of the non-explicit issues was the President and Admiral were mixing the personal and professional. When they started doing that, it started affects their jobs. Making Felix and Tom lovers would have done the same thing. Now, if BSG wanted to point out the hypocrisy there and play with that theme, that immediately swings from a con to a pro. But if Tom had just gotten retconned in via webisodes, it wouldn't have worked.

Um, if you can't tell, I think it would have been interesting if they'd gone that way. If they wanted to do a big storyline with a homosexual couple (and I don't have an objection that they didn't, actually), this would have been a rather daring one to do. But hey, that's what fanfic is for, right?

Anders I want to say Anders is one of my favorite characters after Felix and Tom, but I'm really afraid that Ron Moore will hear me say that and kill him off to spite me.

I really like Anders. He doesn't come across as the smartest guy in terms of books, but he's no dummy. He's got a street smarts that really comes in handy (resistance on Caprica and New Caprica, anyone?), but he's also really got a smarts about people that everyone underestimates. Like Dee, I think Anders knew exactly what he was doing marrying Kara, and what he was getting into. Unlike Dee, I think he could handle the fallout better. (Except with Leoben, but come on Kara, Leoben is FRAKKED UP.)

I like Anders' loyalty to Kara. I like his sense of justice. I like the fact he's willing to say "no, this is going to far" and walk away, like he did in the Circle. I like the fact that he's one of the only characters that actually CARES that Gaeta lost his leg. (I'm actually far less mad at Anders for that than I am at Helo or Adama.) And the fact he's awfully pretty doesn't hurt.

I really thought Michael Trucco did an awesome job last week, too. I think that last week really showed how excellent an actor he is. Anders hasn't been given tons to do, especially in terms of depth. He Loves Kara, and that's almost entirely his function on the show. Last week, when you could really see the more machine side of him... that was one of the high points of the episode for me.

Dr. Horrible. Dr. Horrible is pure awesome. I am starting to be completely crazy about Neil Patrick Harris, and Nathan Fillion made me laugh SO hard in this. I do think Joss needs to let go of his impalement fetish, though.

The thing about Dr. Horrible is the music. Seriously, it's so catchy. Also, Toby LOVES it. So we've been listening to it at least once a day on our way to Eating Hospital. I wish I had more to say about Dr. Horrible, but it's just cool.

Children For those who don't know, I have kids. Two boys: Toby, age 3, and Trevor, age 1. That's all I plan to have, and I have no issues whatsoever with the fact I don't have a girl. I love having boys- they are so much fun. (And I'm a bit of a tomboy, so I much prefer it.)

So how cute are my boys? Extremely. See?

Mutant Reviews. I write for a website called Mutant Reviewers from Hell. (And I'd better get something written soon. I've been writing there for five years. It's an awesome site, and really worth putzing around on. Our reviews are quirky, and we're pretty honest. We also have different reviewers review the same movies, so you can find completely opposite opinions. The original idea was it was supposed to be like friends sitting around in a basement arguing about movies, and I think that still stands. It's also one of the few sites where I could get away with some of the reviews I've written, like my one for Day After Tomorrow, Lemony Snicket's Series of Unfortunate Events, or Open Water.

Additionally, the people at Mutants are AWESOME. Not just the reviewers, of whom I've met five, but the Forum, as well. We seriously have the nicest, most mature (erm, sometimes ;) forum I've ever come across, and it's just a really fun place to hang out. The people are genuinely nice for the most part, and the writers are just amazingly fun to hang out with. My only regret is we don't all live closer that we can get together more often.

West Wing. West Wing was a surprise to me. I'm not a political person- usually politics bore me. Howard wanted the series and I got him the first season for some gift giving occasion, and then agreed to watch the pilot with him. I was hooked, because the writing is smart and the characters are awesome.

I have to admit, the first four seasons are the best. No question. And I did like the final season (although I would have voted for Vinnick.) A few things from West Wing that I love:

Toby: Yes, this is where my son got his name from, although he's not named after the character. But I love Toby's sarcastic grumpiness. And I really wish I'd been able to pull off writing that crossover where he teaches Muggle Studies at Hogwarts in the office next to Snape's.

In Excelsis Deo: (or however you spell it.) Mrs. Landanham made me cry in this one.

The episode where Josh and Toby are trying to get home from the Midwest: Aside from the fact that Josh and Toby on a road trip is a recipe for funny, it showcased biodiesel. Yay biodiesel!

CJ/Danny: My OTP of the show. I'm like the only WW fan whose OTP ISN'T Josh/Donna. I like Josh/Donna okay, but I prefer CJ/Danny.

"Your President is a geek." So say we all!

Needless to say, this list could go on all night.

Lupin I fell for Remus Lupin as a character in Prisoner of Azkaban. I like the pretty boys who aren't allowed to have nice things, and Remus Lupin is like the epitome of that. Plus, I really thought he and Sirius had a thing going, and I liked that idea a lot. It added something interesting (I thought) to their characters. Lupin was even-headed, patient, kind, and emotionally distant, and I thought he was a really interesting and likeable character.

I didn't like Lupin as much later, but more on that.

Sing-Along Mutiny Buahahahaha. BUAhahahah. BuaHAHAHAHaha. :) Okay, so, yeah. Half of the people I hang out with in the BSG fandom have come to the conclusion that Felix Gaeta is secretly Dr. Horrible, and the other half are watching Dr. Horrible on our recommendation. So, what do you do with that knowledge, and a lot of down time at eating hospital? You write a spoof of the original called "Felix Gaeta's Sing-Along Mutiny."

I did filk all of the songs. There are a few that are largely unchanged (Horrible's part in "My Eyes", for example), but most of them are strongly changed. I added dialogue- almost all "missing scenes." I think it works. I need someone to read it over. I should be posting it on Sunday. I'm almost done the rough draft, but I don't want to post today or tomorrow because of the episode fury.

I'm pretty pleased with it, btw. :)

Lost. Ah, Lost. What to say about Lost?

When Lost started, I REALLY liked it. The characters were compelling and the situation was really interesting. And the frustrating thing is that that's still true. However, there are all these other situations that are laid over it that just make me so confused, and I hate time travel.

However, I still watch it.

The thing is, I feel like I've invested this much time, and there are still characters I care about. I like Sayid. I like Claire. I like Sun and Jin (which is funny, because I didn't the first season). I like Juliet. I like Hurley. If he's not around Jack and Kate, I like Sawyer. (If he is around them, he gets boring.) And while I don't LIKE Ben, he fascinates me. So, I'll stick with it.

But I am so freaking lost.

Remus/Tonks. The fury over this has died down a lot, because come on- Remus/Tonks is a small part of a series I love very much for many other reasons. But I still dislike Remus/Tonks.

I don't feel like JKR added it to "degay" Remus. And I would have liked it better if it seemed like it made either of them remotely happy. But it was just so badly done. Tonks losing her metamorph powers over a man? GAG. I mean, why didn't Snape lose powers over Lily, huh? (Although I felt a lot better about this after writing A Boy Thing.) I'm not saying Tonks shouldn't have been upset, because it sounds like Lupin jerked her around a bit, but the losing the powers thing was big.

The thing was, I really liked the OotP Tonks. And the character in HBP had changed so much from her that it felt like it wasn't the same character. I won't say it was out of character (although I do think that writers can write their own characters out of character), but I didn't LIKE that version of Tonks. My issues with the relationship are much more with Tonks than with Remus. :P (Although I do think he was a jerk to her. But I never assumed he was a perfect boyfriend to Sirius, either. His jerkdom was often in character for him.)

Just popped back to say this was a great read! I always love your Gaeta/Zarek commentary. You need to quit tempting me with slash thoughts and just write them! Of course, your Singalong Mutiny was genius. I'm still giggling.

I find a lot of Gaeta fans are also Toby Zeigler fans. If only Toby was a member of the Quorom. Felix might have been able to team up with an idealist after his own heart.

Yeah, I lost my affection for Lost a long time ago. The first season was great, but I think the time travel has made the show tiresome and gimmicky. Killing my favourite character didn't exactly help. I'm not watching anymore, but I'll be interested to know what 'answers' they'll offer up in the end.

OMG, if you EVER decide to write this, I will be the first in line to read it. That'd be awsome!!

I agree with your reasons for disliking R/T - the whole thing was handled badly, and I didn't like what it did to her character, either.

Thanks! I'd love to actually write the Toby-Snape thing, but it has just never come. ::Sigh::

And yeah, R/T just... It didn't ruin the books for me at all, especially now, but it did ruin Tonks for me :P And it makes me a little less eager to see the movies.

eeeEEEEE your boys are darling! (dino pjs!!!) You *so* need to come visit the left coast, and bring them with you! I have a newfound, desperate need to take them to tide pools and torment hermit crabs with them.

Thanks!!! Heh- Toby and the hermit crabs would be hysterical. I strongly suspect Trevor would try to eat them.

... Felix Gaeta's Sing-a-Long Mutiny?

....

I knew I was going to have to watch Dr Horrible eventually, but I think you just sped the process along.

By the way? Your children are adorable.

I am so with you on the Lost thing. I love it, I watch it faithfully, but I'm so freaking...lost! *whimpers*

And your boys are so damn cute!
