There was fic yesterday: Chapter 8 of Youth's Final Luxury.

Was bored and leafing through the PDH backlogs. This one amuses me greatly. For the record, my adviser did NOT give me away. But he was the reader at our wedding. (Hubby and I had the same adviser.)

Speaking of giving away and dads, Toby's been putting together that "Grandma" is MY mommy. So, today he asked me "Do you have a Daddy? Is Grandpa your daddy?"

Ouch.

I did tear up, and it's funny how I couldn't answer for a moment. Not that I was devastated, just... how do you explain "died" to a three year old without him being worried his daddy will do the same thing? Fortunately, we navigated it well. I kind of glossed over the died part and showed him a picture of my dad, and we talked a little about stepdads (which technically, my mom's husband isn't as he married my mom when I was 23, but it's easier) and that he has another grandfather that would have loved him very, very much. That part made me tear up a little more, because if there was one person living or dead I could spend time with, it would be my dad. He's never even met my husband, much less my kids.

Anyway.

What's with the cold weather today? Not looking forward to my run tonight. Hubby's best friend decided he wants to run a half-marathon and was looking for company. I'll never be able to keep up with him, but I decided I need a goal and started training. I've got until September, so as long as I can keep injury free this time, it should be doable. I'm psyched. I've always wanted to do a marathon. Don't know if I'll pull that one off because of time and propensity to hurt my foot, but if I could do a half, that would be a little closer. (I've done 15Ks before, so I'm pretty sure this is doable.)

Ah well. Should continue typing while Toby's watching Cars and Trevor's asleep. Hope everyone is having a good one!

wow i've had the same conversation with my kids; i think they were 3 when they first started asking about "why "poppy simon" was their grandpa but not my dad. my son seemed especially affected by the whole thing. our dog died recently and that brought up the subject again. the twins are almost 5 now, bur death is still too abstract a concept for them to understand fully, but i think losing Ming helped them start to comprehend.

i feel the same way you do about my dad. he died when i was 11 so i've missed getting to share most major things in my life with him, but thinking about what a great grandfather he would have been is the the thing that can still get me ferklempt about his loss, even though it was over 20 years ago...

wow, i admire you for your running goal. i used to be a runner, too. *le sigh* those were the days.

Thanks :) Yeah, the whole "death" thing... it's really hard to explain anyway, but to someone who's still grasping the concept of using the potty... ;)

I really think the grandpa thing is the hardest. I imagine that you must feel the similar frustration that he's never even been able to meet your partner, but I think in a strange way that's easier to deal with. (At least, it is for me. Maybe because my father would have had a heart attack anyway and not liked my husband just for knowing he was having sex with his little girl. Heh.)

Thanks again :)

Are you going to run the Philly half marathon on Sept 20?

Yup- that's the one! Are you guys going to be there as well?

Yeppers! Will and Rob run it every year. As we get closer to the time, let us know roughly what speed you run, and we'll watch (and cheer) for you!

Lol at the comic. I actually have a friend whose advisor performed their wedding ceremony, so I find it amusing.

Go you for aiming to do a marathon! I'm really impressed by anyone who does them, it takes so much effort. I can't even imagine running for 5+ hours straight.

Wow- performed the ceremony? That makes me feel better :)

I'd love to make it to a marathon, but we'll see. I'm doubtful if that will happen any time soon just because of the training time. Half I can get the time. The full... I'm not sure my husband would be thrilled with the idea for a few more years yet!

the most recent PhD was perfect! It's already on my office door (along with this xkcd and also this one.)

Sorry about your dad. :-( That's definitely not someone I ever want to even consider losing. (((hugs)))

Thanks. It happened about 17 years ago, so I'm pretty used to it. But thanks :)

The most recent PHD one cracks me up. (Very different from Six, huh? :) ) The others are great as well, although I'm definitely not a biologist :) (But I'm a chemist. So I find it amusing anyway.)

I miss science sometimes. (Wow. I think I retired my science icon. Dr. Bunsen and Beaker will have to do.)
