The boys are so not cooperating. Well, the fictional ones, and one of the real ones. Fortunately, Trevor is behaving and is asleep in his room. It sounds like Toby might be accepting his fate as well.
Ooops. Nope. Not yet.

falafel_musings: Comment here and ask me anything about any fandom I'm involved in/have been involved in. Controversial or innocent, silly or serious, ask and you'll get my honest opinion on the subject. General or specific, anything goes.
Stuff I get fannish about are the obvious two (HP and BSG), but also Firefly, Buffy, West Wing, LOST, Heroes (which SUCKED last night) and Pern in the past.
Okay. Maybe I can get a workout in now.
roses_griffes, sorry if I'm a little late, but I will be there!

Date: 2009-04-22 02:05 am (UTC)Hurm... I know you've got two parentages for Felix- Adopted by a gay couple, and the 'miracle baby' of a doting older couple. If you've got the rest of Felix's past figured out, does his past differ depending on the parentage, or is it the same no matter? Also, what colony do you think he's from?? And when am I getting a toddler!Felix vignette? XD

Date: 2009-04-22 04:08 am (UTC)~Cylons with Jackhammers~
"Daddy?"
Chris groaned. "It's four in the morning. Don't you dare," he told Brian.
But Brian was already sitting up. "What is it, Felix?"
"I had a bad dream," Felix said, snuffling.
"What about?" Brian asked sympathetically. Chris made an inarticulate sound and pulled the blanket over his head.
"It was a bad dream," Felix insisted.
"So take him back to bed and make sure his nightlight is still on," Chris mumbled.
But it was hard to do that when a four year old in feetie pajamas looked up at you with big eyes and riotous curls. Brian patted the bed.
"You're spoiling him," Chris muttered. But he moved over.
Felix lay down between them, clutching his worn stuffed tiger. "Now," Brian said. "Tell me all about it."
"There were Cylons," Felix said. "And they had jackhammers. And they were coming to get me."
"That sounds like a scary dream."
"It was."
"But you know, the Cylons are far, far away right now," Brian said. "And even if they weren't, your dad and I were two of the best Viper pilots in the Fleet. Right Chris?"
"Damn straight. Whatever. Shut up and go to sleep."
"See? So even if the Cylons came here, we'd never let them get you. Does that make you feel better?" Felix snuffled again and nodded. "Good. Now you can stay here with me and Dad and sleep."
"Okay." Felix curled up against him. "Daddy?" he whispered, as Brian draped an arm around him.
"Yes?"
"Why do Cylons need jackhammers?"
Chris just groaned.
***
Felix walked through the streets of New Caprica, trying not to look around.
It's not a gunshot. It's not a gunshot, he told himself, and it wasn't. It went on too long.
He couldn't help it. He looked over at where they were building the new detention center. Humans were doing the heavy work, but Cylon crews were handling the heavy machinery, probably because they didn't trust the humans.
A Two stopped and wiped his forehead. And then went back to using his jackhammer.

Date: 2009-04-22 03:16 am (UTC)2. What's your favorite episode of "Firefly"?
3. And I asked falafel_musings this one, too, but I like this question a lot, so...
You're hosting a dinner party for eight guests, yourself not included. You can invite characters from any and all of your fandoms. Who do you invite, and how do you arrange the seating so people get to sit next to folks they'd find interesting dinner company yet sit far away from those who don't or wouldn't get along well?
*edited because adjectives are my friends, and I shouldn't leave them out of sentences that really, really need them*

Date: 2009-04-22 04:17 am (UTC)2.) Ariel. It's such an awesome episode and has the comedy, the action, the drama... everything.
3.) I have to admit, I totally have a girls' night. Kaylee Frye, Cally Henderson, Willow Rosenberg, Dee, Buffy, Ainsley Hayes, Lily Potter, and Daphne from Heroes and I all sit around and eat lots of fondue and drink a ton of wine. Afterwards, we put on Moulin Rogue! and pretend to mock it while we all end up crying at the end. And we're drunk off our asses :)
Our few husbands go out together, except that when they get back, we find out that Howard (my husband), Chief, and James "accidentally" ditched Lee. (Tara hung out with other friends.)

Date: 2009-04-22 11:26 am (UTC)The second thing that can kill a fandom for me is distance from a source material. Although I had issues with Deathly Hallows, it DID close canon. I didn't feel that driving need to speculate on what was going to happen, and because I haven't had time to read much of anything, especially anything hardcover, I haven't gone back and re-read the HP series in a long time. I still love the characters, but they aren't living in my head. Which is good in it's way, because I'd really like to work on my original stuff.
The final thing that kills a fandom for me is migration. This seems to be really related to the second. Eventually, people do move on. Most of my favorite authors stopped writing HP fics. They're all in different fandoms right now, and most of them are fandoms that I know nothing about. (I feel like I'm the only person on my list that doesn't watch SPN.) There's nothing wrong with new authors- heck, I was one myself- but I don't have that connection. Especially in a larger fandom that attracts younger writers who are inexperienced.
Felix Gaeta is from the new Battlestar Galactica. (I VERY highly recommend the new series, even if the final episode will probably leave you fairly unfulfilled.) He's mostly a secondary character which makes him ideal for ficcing. For the first two seasons, he was basically the technobabble guy on the ship. Then they realized the guy could actually act, and decided to start torturing his character. Because (and here's the big attraction) Felix Gaeta is a Pretty Boy Not Allowed to Have Nice Things. But like the Marauders, he was given enough plot to make him incredibly compelling, but not so much that there isn't a lot of room to fic him and stay canon compatible. He even had the vague sexuality to go with it, although BSG actually gave him a boyfriend (in an offscreen webisode, but still). BSG has a lot of those interesting-but-neglected characters to play with. (That would be the younger guy in the icon, btw. The older one is not the boyfriend, but Zarek, my other pet character.)
Fun questions! :)

Date: 2009-04-22 11:31 am (UTC)I always thought I was more invested in Remus. He's more of a woobie at times, and he was originally presented as more sympathetic than Sirius, just because of their roles. But then I got involved in a Sirius community. I was one of the few Sirius/Remus shippers in the community, and fairly vocal about it. There was a silly "Sirius Black is mine" contest, and one of my friends joked that I should write an essay for Remus. So I did. Somewhere in that essay, there was one line about the only time Remus had ever seen Sirius cry was when he left his family. The same friend said I should write that story. So I did. It was gen, and my first epic.
After writing Deny Thy Father, I definitely got more invested in Sirius :) (The icon, btw, is art that

Date: 2009-04-22 07:00 pm (UTC)First of all, my afterlife!Tom doesn't think Lee is so expendable militaristically that he should have sloughed off his responsibility. His second theory is that if he WAS going to, then what they should have done was held a vote to promote someone else already within the Quorum. Would we have known that person? Well, if you'd put Romo in the new Quorum, we could have. But promoting a Quorum member would have made more sense. Sure, it isn't a GREAT answer, but it's a democratic one. Who died and left Lee in charge? Oh, that's right. Felix and Tom.
So my afterlife!Tom joins Dee and Felix on the couch every once in a while and gleefully tosses popcorn at the Adamas heads :)

Ok, now that Tom has that out of his system, maybe he should go ahead and kill the Quorum already. :)
