No update for A Lot to Live Up to today... sort of. I got distracted with another project- keep your eye out for one called "Pain and Heaven". ALTLUT will be back next week :)
Must finish some Mutant stuff. I've almost got a review of Third Man Out done. I don't think I have much to say about it that I haven't seen other people say (good movie overall, loved Donald and Timmy, but good Lord did Rutka get preachy.) I should do some more, as well.
Took the kids to the creek yesterday for the first time in ages. It was really nice, because we were joined by one of my best friends and her two little ones. It was hard to talk, but we haven't seen each other in a while, so the little we could was good.
Also? Trevor playing in the creek is the most adorable thing in the world. He was so proud of himself playing with the big boys, and needless to say he got filthy. And he kept coming over to give me these huge, muddy hugs. SO cute.
Trevor had his 18 month appointment at the doctor's last week, which, wow. 18 months already. He's still not talking, but he clearly understands what we're saying and all, so I'm not too worried about his intelligence. (Mild mental handicaps run in my husband's family.) He's only said one thing that we were sure was a word- I was talking to Howard two weekends ago, and Trevor wanted to be picked up. I was making him wait and he was getting impatient, so suddenly, clear as day, I heard "Mommy!" Heh. I think the stinker is holding out on me. Both my sister and my nephew (both second children themselves) talked very late as well, so... it would not surprise me if he needs speech therapy (his babbling is very indistinct and I don't hear a lot of variation in the sounds), but I think his mind is fine.
And just because Toby's the oldest and gets more attention:

I love the grin. Not such a great picture of me, though :P

The only thing that makes me sad about these pictures is you can't see his curls- they're usually in the back of his head if his hair's long enough.

My current favorite picture of Trevor.

Date: 2009-06-26 11:56 am (UTC)Girls in my family talk very early (well, there's only 2 of us, and we both did) and all the boys late - my brother didn't start until he was 2, and his son didn't start until he was 3-and-a-half, but he's being raised bilingual, which delays things further.

Date: 2009-06-27 12:49 am (UTC)Toby talked VERY early, and is still WAY ahead of where he should be speechwise. So part of what we've always said is that we've had no experience with "normal". And that Tobe doesn't shut up long enough for Trevor to talk! :)

Date: 2009-06-26 01:35 pm (UTC)My brother also talked late, probably in part because I was such a chatterbox. He mumbled a lot, and I did a lot of, "what he's saying is...", to the point where my parents used to refer to me jokingly as my brother's "attorney". But my brother went on to be minister in his church, giving sermons nearly every week, so yeah, clearly early behavior was no predictor of later accomplishment. :)

Date: 2009-06-27 12:50 am (UTC)It's funny you mention the chatterbox part, because I'm convinced that's part of it. Toby never. shuts. up., so I think Trevor just doesn't get a chance to get a word in edgewise! :)

Date: 2009-06-26 02:26 pm (UTC)My little brother was a late-talker. I mean, he said stuff early, but it was this weird gibberish that I somehow understood and translated for our parents. XD

Date: 2009-06-27 12:51 am (UTC)Yeah, I'm not too worried. He's understanding- that's plenty right now. Lots of people talk late.

Date: 2009-06-26 04:28 pm (UTC)this is just something I've noticed but second children seem to often speak later. wether its because there siblings talk for them or the parents just get good at understanding their body language and sounds, I'm not sure, but when they do start talking its pretty much full sentences.

Date: 2009-06-27 02:55 am (UTC)Yeah, that's what I keep hearing. I'm not worried... just READY! :)

Date: 2009-06-26 04:48 pm (UTC)Sure enough, one night I said "moon", a few days later I said "water" and after a couple of weeks I was talking in full sentences. And believe me, I don't have any cognitive problem. ♥

Date: 2009-06-27 02:58 am (UTC)I'm actually not all that worried- late talking seems common in my family and in second children. I'd be even less worried if mental handicaps didn't run in my husband's family. But I think the more likely explanation is that poor Trevor never gets a word in edgewise when Toby's around! :)

Date: 2009-06-26 07:50 pm (UTC)On the other hand, I started talking without any baby talk, so maybe it balances out.

Date: 2009-06-26 10:02 pm (UTC)Heh. I think the stinker is holding out on me.
I think one day he's just going to come out with full sentences and floor everyone. :-)
And he kept coming over to give me these huge, muddy hugs. SO cute.
You are such a cool mom. :-)

Date: 2009-06-27 12:34 am (UTC)And, echoing everyone here, I wouldn't worry about the talking yet, either. :) Boys tend to mature/develop slower than girls anyway, and with that along with being a second child (sibling talks for them, you and Howard read body language better, etc.) it makes sense to me. If he understands what you're saying and will clearly say your name (hee), then I agree he might just be holding out on you. Even personality-wise, he could be an observe-first, jump-in-later kid/person, and there's nothing wrong with that. :) Preschool boys often need speech later, anyway, though kids don't even develop certain sounds for years, well through 4/5/6, as they need the muscle tone and control just to do it, and that takes time.
The 16 month old girl I have this summer is SO ready to talk. Her babbling *is* distinctive and she has lots of individual words -- plus her repeating sounds and words is very good. It's really cute, though, how she'll babble with this conversational up/down to her voice when she's "talking" to you, and along with the tone every once in a while there's a distinct word: "Mommy" or "doggy" or something similar. She clearly knows what she's saying to us, it's the adults that are clueless! XD

Date: 2009-06-27 03:02 am (UTC)Yeah, I'm not terribly worried, to be honest. Toby never stops talking, so I think that's part of it. (Seriously. If Toby's awake, his mouth is running.)
That babbling you're talking about cracks me up. Tobe used to do that too- it sounded like he was talking in an alien language. I LOVE it, and I wish Trev was doing it because it's SOOOO cute!

Date: 2009-06-29 06:33 pm (UTC)THAT would be entertaining. "Mommy? What's slash? Why's that person dressed like a Trooperstorm (that's what he calls stormtroopers)?" And, when I went to get AJ's autograph, "My mommy says your curls are hot!"
Or worse :)
No story, but there was a battle entry posted over on
