Jul. 16th, 2009 03:52 pmA Lot to Live Up To might be a day or two late, as I have yet to finish the chapter and send it to
trovia for a beta.
On the one hand, this chapter frustrates me a little. We're in a weird spot. The Lee/Kara thing is over (which ought to make the Lee/Kara shippers happy, because I think reading it from Dee's POV was hard for you guys), and Lee and Dee are into the honeymoon phase of their makeup for the whole chapter. So there's no Lee/Dee conflict now, but as we all know, she DOES leave him eventually. This chapter seems to be a bit of an agglomeration- I'm starting some of the stuff for why she DOES leave Lee when Lee takes up Baltar's defense, and I'm also winding down a few plotlines. Like, all the Noel/Louis stuff is pretty much out there now. And Louis was mentioned to be in remission, so there's some stuff with that aspect, and him and Felix. But between the winding down and the starting up, it makes this chapter a little... well, I think it works in the context of the full story, but it's definitely got two plots going in it.
On the other hand, this chapter has some very happy stuff in it. That's nice :)
I watched the second and third Strachey movies this week since hubby was on the road. I really enjoyed them, although there are aspects that are definitely made for TV movies. I also always have a hard time writing Narcho after watching them, because although Sebastian Spence played both roles, Narcho is most definitely NOT Timmy Callahan. (My version of Narcho is a little closer to redneck than Brooks Brothers:) ) One of these days I ought to read the books the series was based on. I do have to say that my movie three, the writer's gotten a little predictable. I always ignore the first person I suspect and go for someone who seems sympathetic, and one of the jerks at the beginning will inevitably turn around and... not see the light fully, but see that they're hurting someone they love.
I really like the relationship between Donald and Timmy, though. It really avoids certain cinematic pitfalls. For example, when a guy hits on Donald (and this has happened two out of three movies, and frankly, he's hot enough that I TOTALLY get why), rather than this long, drawn out play thing, Donald immediately makes things clear with "no, I'm married." And although the guys that hit on him are hot and the physical attraction is clear, Donald's answer is immediate and irrevocable. I like that, because I think a lot of people I know and like would respond that way if they were married. I would. I mean, my meet-the-actor fantasies don't ever involve sex. They usually involve getting together for a really good dinner and a lots of wine, or more recently running the half-marathon and by Amazing Coincidence we meet up and run it together.
And I wonder why my son makes up imaginary friends.
ANYWAY, yeah. You know that Friends episode, where they make the list of five? I don't have one. I mean, I have actors I think are hot, but nowhere in my wedding vows does it say "until death do us part, unless someone really hot and famous comes along." Which probably makes me sound really sanctimonious, but it's not, really, because I know that people have them because they're fun, and most people would never actually act on them, even in the chance that it would actually happen and the celeb would actually be interested.
Wow. I'm procrastinating.
I totally thought of
blue_crow watching On the Other Hand, Death last night though. Twice
blue_crow's commented to me about how she gets a kick out of people incorporating the female voyeristic element in slash fic. There was a scene in OtOH,D where Donald and Timmy are having a very nicely written conversation about why Donald didn't tell Timmy that Timmy's friend hit on him, and it's really sweet and very nicely done and it ends with Donald saying that he loves Timmy. It's totally romantic. And at the end of it, there's this sigh, and they both look up to see four young women watching and basically squeeing over how romantic the two of them are. I totally cracked up, especially since I'd pretty much been doing the same thing.
But yeah, I've liked the series so far. It's funny, there's good banter, and the relationship between Don and Timmy is really nicely done in that they bicker, they fight, they support each other, they have sex, they tease each other, they banter, they drag each other to things that the other is totally not interested in and bribe each other with sexual favors... in short, they actually act like a real couple. And the mysteries have been pretty good so far, although like I said, I'm catching on to the author's style.
Looking forward to the posting of
remixredux09. I'm dying to see what my remixer wrote, and desperately hoping my remixee likes my fic. This year is fun because I'm dying to see what fandom my remixer even chose. (I know it would be possible to peek- I've been very, very good.) I also suspect it will be a while before I get to see HBP- schedules are crazy, and if I do get a chance to go to the movies soon it will probably be to take Toby to see Ice Age 3.
Should really work on ALTLUT. I'm almost done the chapter, but it's gonna need major smoothing....

Date: 2009-07-17 07:11 pm (UTC)I'm wondering if I'd like Don Strachey as much in print. The way Chris Allen plays him is just so endearing. I get such a kick out of him when he gives Tim that "That's why you love me, aren't I adorable?" sort of smile. (And he totally is.) I'll have to read these at some point.
You know what we need to make? We need to make Donald/Timmy icons for you, me, and kappa. (and anyone else who's watched them.) I'll have to see if I can find some screencaps. Because they're on my awesome couples list :)
