Just watched the first episode of Dollhouse. Yeah, I know I'm so behind, but with Fox's record of canceling shows I like, can you blame me for waiting for the DVD?

Enjoyed it very much, to be honest. Yes, I'm sure there's some major Things to Think About there, in terms of imprinting and the whole premise of the Dollhouse, but so far (one episode in), it's not driving me crazy. What IS driving me crazy is two things:

1.) the people looking like this might not be a great idea and shaking their heads as they try to sound meaningful about having some reservations

and

2.) Paul Ballard's hair. Seriously, do you know what I think happened?

On the BSG set:

Tahmoh Penikett: Hey, I know this is a silly question, but I've just got to know... who did your hair?

Brad Dryborough: Ugh. Don't ever go near the stylist. Here's their card so you can AVOID THEM AT ALL COST.

(TP looks at it, tucks it into his pocket, and then six months later finds it again and totally forgets how he got it.)
Tahmoh Penikett: Hmm. I need a haircut. Maybe I should give this guy a call....

Okay. Maybe it wasn't THAT bad. But it was close. Really close.

Also? Someone misses writing River....

I might need to make me a Dollhouse icon at some point.

XD Paul's hair IS pretty bad. BUT DUDE DID YOU SEE THE BOXING!?

Actually we had a good chuckle when the father of the little girl was saying hostage negotiators should be comforting grandfatherly types and my friend next to me (hilariously enough? Named Sierra) goes "Like Adama." and then dude on the screen goes "Like Edward James Olmos"

Give the show until about.. episode 6 or 7 and it starts getting good.

THE BOXING. GAH. My husband was laughing his ass off at me.

You can tell Joss is a BSG fan :) Definitely!

Are you kidding? The Active/Cylon parallels are like... through the roof. Especially as the season goes on. :D

Heee!!

It takes a while to get going, but the last half of the season is pretty awesome.

I'm actually enjoying it a lot already- my standards might be lower because all my shows are off :P

Your icon reminds me that I wanted to rewatch some Firefly. I miss my other other other gay space show. ♥

Yeah, like everyone is saying, episode 6 is where the magic happens.

Your fake Tamoh/Brad conversation is hilarious.

Dude, someone likes writing frakked up in the head fragile powerhouse girlies is what it is. It almost verges on a problem for me, as much as I admit that I lurved River. Honestly, I've been more into Sierra. But be prepared for some disturbing backstory revelations as you proceed through this season.

The whole meaningful reservations headshakes gets way better in the second half of the season. It starts to grow some teeth. I can't tell if Joss was trying to lull us into a false sense of annoyance, or if he was just trying to get the nastier stuff by the FOX censors by putting it in later in the season.

So far, my fave non-Doll characters are Boyd and Adele, with Victor as a close second. I kinda hate the Ballard character, much to my surprise.

I'm actually very much enjoying it already. ALL my shows are off or in haitus- my standards might be lowered :)

I'm really liking Boyd a lot, and already setting up some ships in my head. (like Boyd/Doctor whoeversheis, and Paul/Neighbor, although it's Joss- none of these will have a happy ending.) But already, I'm determining the ship I'm going to be fondest of is the platonic Boyd-Echo father-daughter like ship. Because yeah- that's like crack to me.

I can't look at Ballard and not think "Helo." Especially "Woman King Helo." Oh well.

Well, I literally turned off the episode in the middle that had Echo hunted as human prey, and resolved to stop watching the show. But I kept hearing great things about it as the season progressed and then Episode six came and there was this explosion on my friends list of OMG! and I had to find out what was going on. It got way better. Joss is playing around with some very touchy issues around sexism and free will that it was hard to know at first if he was commenting on them or falling into them at first. And what's interesting is that by the end of the season, I was sure he was commenting on them, but I couldn't say that he didn't fall prey to them a little too. But really, the things he was trying to do was pretty daring fare for prime time fare, and certainly for FOX.

I *LOVE* Platonic!Boyd/Echo, even though it's well um...kinda paternalistic. I can't help it. I'm right there with you. He's so protective of her, it's very appealing, damnit! But it will get very interesting once Ballard gets closer to the Dollhouse, just you wait and see. Ballard will make you think twice about the Boyd/Echo relationship by the end of the season, I think.

Yeah, Ballard's kind of a little inflexible, no? He is kind of "Woman King" Helo, isn't he? I hadn't thought of that. :)

The episode with Echo being hunted down as prey bothered me more for the fact that I still remember my husband making me watch "Surviving the Game", which was the same basic plot than anything else.

Joss is playing around with some very touchy issues around sexism and free will that it was hard to know at first if he was commenting on them or falling into them at first.

I think this is why I've been enjoying it. I've assumed from the beginning he's commenting on these issues. I mean, Joss likes his anti-heroes. Mal's a thief and a criminal- I mean, he's got his ethical code, but he still has no problem swiping what doesn't belong to him. Ditto the rest of the crew, really. And then there was Dr. Horrible... so I never assumed that we were meant to like the Dollhouse.

Actually, I find the character of Topher very interesting so far, and Joss is doing an experiment I always wanted to try. He's making a character that I despise ethically, and giving him such charisma that I can't help but like the moments that the guy is on screen. I do consider what he's doing with programming dolls fairly tantamount to rape, and I think we're meant to. (At least, from the five episodes we've watched.) But yet, Joss is deliberately giving him the sense of humor and the dialogue he knows fans eat up, in an effort to make us like him. I find that a fascinating writing exercise.

I *LOVE* Platonic!Boyd/Echo, even though it's well um...kinda paternalistic.

That's exactly why I like it! I mean, you've seen my Tom-Felix stuff, and my favorite relationship on Buffy was platonic Buffy-Giles. I LOVE father figures... they are crack to me.

Yeah, Ballard's kind of a little inflexible, no? He is kind of "Woman King" Helo, isn't he? I hadn't thought of that. :)

He IS! he's also (and Gods, please no because I DON'T need to start writing Ballard fic) starting to come across as a Pretty Boy Not Allowed To Have Nice Things. If he does do that, I am so, so, SO doomed.

BTW- happy birthday! I wrote you birthday fic- it's on my LJ. Hope you have a fantastic one, although I strongly suspect you will :)
