Monday Night TV
Sep. 29th, 2009 08:00 amFirst, I apologize about sucking in answering comments. In theory, I'm supposed to be done my big bang draft tomorrow. It won't be totally done, but a lot is done so my artist can get a good feeling for it.
I haven't been watching Heroes yet this season, because the 8:00 timeslot sucks for me as I'm still putting the kids to bed. Plus, I just... well, Heroes has jerked me around enough. But a few thoughts:
The spoilers: Claire's gonna go bi.
Is it reasonable to be annoyed? I mean, okay, yeah, pretty teenage girls ARE bisexual or lesbian. But at the same time, making a pretty teenage girl get into a girl-girl encounter doesn't so much raise awareness as make teenage guys go "hubba hubba!" (Well, maybe not THOSE words. But still. You all get what I'm saying.) I'm not totally opposed to it, because 1.) almost everyone in TV land who gets a romance is ridiculously attractive, and 2.) I haven't seen how they're handling it yet. Maybe it will actually be done with sensitivity and class. But this is Heroes, and so my faith in #2 has frankly dropped significantly. (Although they DID handle the Indian lesbian couple very nicely- I actually really liked that plotline, where Hiro stopped the wedding and was TOTALLY OBLIVIOUS to the fact that the bride had a lover.)
But at the same time, why not have some of the new characters coming in be gay? Or even someone like Ando (who never REALLY got a romance, even though Ando/Hiro's sister was darling). Or the Haitian. Granted, Claire is young enough that it's really easy to work into her story arc, because she's still at an age where she'd really be figuring stuff like that out. But none of that changes the fact that she's a hot blond chick.
You know, as an aside, that is one thing I liked about them using Hoshi for Gaeta. Yes, Narcho is much better looking, but I actually kind of like that Hoshi was a regular-looking guy who was in his early forties.
So, I'll withhold any judgment, but I'm dubious.
2.) My husband was watching Heroes as I was prepping for my run last night, so I caught a little bit. Matt has Sylar living in his head? Making him do things?? DOES THIS REMIND US OF ANYONE? ::giggles uncontrollably.:: Matt, sweetie, take lessons from Baltar. If you're going to hallucinate an imaginary friend, make it a hot blond in a red dress. (Since they aren't going to make MATT bi, even though I think Matt/Mohinder would have been far more interesting than Matt/Daphne (I liked Daphne/Ando, thank you!) and they had the setup for it and everything.) Of course, I just don't think Zachary Quinto is all that hot. He's just not my type, I don't know why.
I also watched Big Bang Theory, which I've been catching up on. This is one show where I am completely, utterly shipless. I much prefer the plotlines where they're focused on some crazy geek thing than romances. I am amazed- in a good way- that this show is so popular though. It doesn't seem like it should be, but it is, and that makes me happy.
I would watch How I Met Your Mother, but that 8:00 time slot really kills it. Plus, I haven't watched the previous season yet, and HIMYM is actually best watched in some sort of sequence.
Okay. Off to get the kids up. Hmmm. I took my Heroes icon out of rotation.... That says a lot.

Date: 2009-09-29 11:04 pm (UTC)I never got into Heroes, and I'm kind of glad now that I didn't get invested so I'm not let down now. As for the cliche of the hot blond chick going bi, the only surprising thing is that it's not on FOX. I'm starting to think that perhaps bisexual women are over-represented on TV, weird as that sounds. For current shows, there's "Bones," looks like "Dollhouse" (with the weird Whiskey/Echo flashback last ep.), "House," plus "Grey's Anatomy" on ABC, off the top of my head. The only gay men I can think of on current broadcast TV are actually boys--Kurt on "Glee," and I think I remember a very young gay couple on a daytime soap that was on at the gym. Oh, genderfail. Do you suppose that some men (ie, the guys in programming) are just so uncomfortable with depictions of gay men in a non-humorous context that they decided no one must be interested, without actually testing the water? I mean, it didn't exactly kill "Six Feet Under."

Date: 2009-09-30 01:36 am (UTC)I think the gay soap couple in on As the World Turns or All My Children, and I think they've done very little kissing. I'm trying to think of other shows we've watched...
Weeds had a gay cop. It started off as a joke, and then suddenly turned around and got really serious and almost made me cry in the space of one line. I haven't watched this season yet to see if he's still around.
Modern Family has a gay male couple raising a baby. Didn't watch the pilot, but...
The Office has a gay male character.
But, like you said, all comedies.

I still think this is why Gaeta never got a love life until the webisodes, and even then had to have sex with an Eight. I mean, the Baltar thing needed a line or two to make it canon- that was IT. You can't tell me there was never enough time.
So yeah. TOTALLY agree with you.

Date: 2009-10-02 09:31 pm (UTC)From what I gathered at the Heroes panel at Comic-Con, Claire's not really going bi in any big way. There may be a bit of experimentation but it didn't sound like they were going anywhere with it. If they were, I'd expect them to play it up!
Also, I thought they learned not to give Claire a love interest? Of course, she never learns not to lie to her father, so....
I haven't seen a lot of love for the Head!Sylar story, but I'm loving it, if only because Head!Sylar is SO VERY SNARKTASTIC. Which is redeeming because Matt otherwise makes me @@.
YEAH BIG BANG!
