This day has "I am going to suck" written all over it.

The kids were terrors yesterday, and today isn't shaping up to be much better. Toby's got... something. Right now, it's borderline cold and something-else MAYBE- or it could just be a cold. He's got a stuffy nose and a cough, but that's it. No fever, no sickness, no nothing else. I sent him to preschool, letting them know I'll be home so if they need to, they can call. (I keep my cell phone on anyway, but still.) But given the number of tantrums he had before we went to preschool....

And then there's Trevor. Trevor, who's finally starting to talk. However, he's got this thing he's doing now when he says something, he wants you to repeat it back to him. I'm sure that it's pretty simple- he's sorting things out that this is a car, this is a truck, this is a hat, this is a whale, this is an alligator... I get it. But it also gets real old that I have to keep repeating it all back, and he freaks out if I don't. And his enunciation is bad enough that sometimes I just don't understand. Sheesh. Plus, last night we had to cry it out. He's had an ear infection and gotten used to being cuddled.

Last night, when I called my poor husband, I just burst into tears. Not a good day.

THEN, to top things off, I made my caramels for [livejournal.com profile] help_haiti yesterday morning. Great, right? I fully planned to spend today cutting and wrapping them, but... Yeah, but. I was out of parchment paper, so I lined the pans with wax paper.

You know, I'm a frigging Ph.D. In science. So why was I dumb enough to think this was a good idea? The wax paper completely fused to the caramel. If this was for my family, I'd trim off the bottom and ignore the fact they looked like shit. But they're for the auction, which means guess what I'm doing today? Yeah. After I pick up Tobe, we need to stop at the grocery store and get all the stuff to make both batches all over again. 8 cups of heavy cream, 8 cups of sugar, 1 pound of good chocolate, and 4 cups of corn syrup, all down the drain, because I was stupid. ARGH.

On the bright side, my fic for [livejournal.com profile] frolicndetour seems to be moving along well, although I'm totally getting carried away. Although I still need to finish that Nine review. Which is all very difficult with Trevor perched in my lap. (But he's just so darn CUTE!) And it's sunny out for a change. And I watched "Frozen Seas" from Blue Planet with Toby yesterday, and there was a baby polar bear in it. (OMG- CUTE!!!!!! Toby and I agreed that we just wanted to hug him.)

Can we just get to the end of the day already?

Aaagh, sorry about the caramels. Consider it an experiment?

The suckage of this day needs to stop, asap. agreed!

Or a learning experience :P ::sigh::

I hope your day stopped sucking!

Oh, sweetie, that just sucks. Especially about the caramels. Sometimes the learnings we acquire just don't kick in at the right time, do they?

I hope the kid starts feeling better soon.

I know. As one of my labmates said back in grad school, some days you're a genius and some days it's all you can do to keep from drooling on yourself. Guess which day this was?

I hope so, too, but he started a fever today. Which might be good, since it means Dr. and medication (if he needs it.)

Oh, ARGH for all of that. I HATE feeling like I put a lot of time, effort and money into the kitchen, only to have it fail. Pam-sprayed foil wouldn't work, I take it?

Sigh.

As for Trevor - it's reminding me that when MiniPlu was 2.5 yrs old, we had the reverse problem - she repeated everything I said, probably testing out that this was how sentences were structured.

"Let's go upstairs."
"Go upstairs?"
"Yes. We can play there until Daddy comes."
"Until Daddy comes?"

All day long. Drove. Me. Bananas. So - my sympathies.

Time to pick a Tuesday, perhaps? :)

Thanks!

Yes, time to pick a Tuesday!!! Let's not say this coming Tuesday, because Toby's likely to still be dragging. (I know it's only Wednesday, but I'm thinking he's got something.) Maybe the 9th of February? Does that work for you?

And wow, that would get old REAL fast!!!!!

Tues the 9th sounds good. Want to make the road trip this time? Or shall I come down again?

You've been kind enough to make the trip out this way a few times- I'll come on up to you this time, if that works! Save you the trip.

What time's good for you?

Sounds good! How about the usual mid-late morning, 10-11ish? What kind of lunch would your boys like? PB&J? Grilled cheese? Mac & cheese? Something else? Any particular fruits or veggies they prefer?

Also, glad you were able to get the ear infection taken care of. :)

Wax paper? Eep. Ah, well, we all have these sort of disasters from time to time. My mum - a qualified domestic science teacher with over 40 years cooking experience - recently tried to make lemon meringue pie with Splenda in the meringue. I managed not to laugh (much) when she told me about the soggy little puddle she got on the top of her pie. ;p

Splenda scares me a bit. Most artificial sweeteners do, truthfully.

But yeah, wax paper. It was one of those days where all I could do was not drool on myself, apparently.

Oh, sweetheart. I'm sorry you're having a rubbish day. Can you salvage the first batch of caramels for you and your family?

xxx

Thanks!

I thought about salvaging them, but I'm the only one who would eat them and I'm dieting. I just tossed em :P Such a waste, but still.

Heh... well I've made the same mistake before too. About parchment and wax paper. Don't feel bad.

(((hugs))) It's stuff like that that makes me worry that I am not cut out to be a mom.

Also: I'm a PhD too, but I didn't know there was that much of a difference between parchment paper and wax paper. :-}
