Well, Trevor slept last night, which means I slept last night, so things are better. I could have done without Trevor getting up so early, but as it is, I won't complain. I think I'm going to take him to the doctor today though, just to get his ears checked out. His nose is really running again, and two nights up like that... I think last night he slept just because he was so TIRED.

I feel like I ought to attempt taking the kids out in the snow again, too. Even if they mainly play in the driveway. Actually, what I really should do is see if some of Toby's buddies are home. Playing in the snow is always more fun when you have a friend.

I'm looking forward to posting tomorrow's chapter of Not Where I Belong. I've been sitting on it for a week, but I've done the serial thing before and I know not to post early, because I never know when I'll have trouble with another chapter, so getting ahead is good. (And Chapter 4 is hard, for reasons that will be obvious soon enough.) I'm very amusedly wondering how long this sucker is going to be. I have totally lost my ability to write short. Oh well.

We did remix assignments last night, so those should be in mailboxes in the next 24 hours! I have to say, the "How far I want to be pushed out of my comfort zone" question made things a LOT easier. Well, I hope. I hope everyone is excited about their assignments. But I know remix can be scary, but one of the luxuries about doing a challenge that's not huge (compared to like, an R/S challenge or the multifandom remix) is that we can accommodate what people want. But I have to admit, I'm extremely, extremely excited about who I got assigned. (I know I had some control over it, but still. I wasn't going to say who I wanted until we had everyone matched up and it became clear that this person wasn't an ideal match for someone else.)

I've got a few other things that are lurking at the edges of my brain, too. I've got most of the first chapter of the Hoshi backstory for ALTLUT on this computer now, and should post that. I don't know how long that one will take, but I also don't know how many people will read it. It's so Hoshi-centric, set before the series even takes place, and unless you've read ALTLUT, you're probably not overly interested in it. Plus, if any of my stories could get jossed by Caprica, this is the one since so much of it takes place planetside. I still have to finish Teacher's Pet, and I've got the Pigs In Space crossover still lurking. I'm also sitting on a review of The Kite Runner that just needs a few details added, and I have an article about Romantic Comedies that needs finishing SOON, because it's perfect for around V-Day.

I also have a bunny that I've been sort of dying to play with, and I keep wondering how I should write it. I am a firm believer that The Woman King should have been done with Gaeta instead of Helo, and the more I think about it, the more I think I'm right. In addition to not making Helo look so self-righteous, it sets up more tensions between Adama and Gaeta, allows Tom Zarek to have a role where he can be RIGHT without making Adama and Roslin look stupid, gives us a little background for Gaeta and Zarek, and brings Hoshi into the light a little more so he can have a personality. I really think the writers made a mistake in not using the Pegasus characters more, and that there was so much unmined potential there. (I'd love to have seen a Pegasus-integrating-to-Galactica arc, personally.) I'm just not quite sure how to write it.

I suppose I should write while Sesame Street is on. I think I'll open up Cally and the Romcoms article, and go back and forth between them. That should give me a REALLY nice headache :)

Which is funny, because I have always threatened to rewrite TWK so it doesn't suck quite so much. I think using Gaeta would be a great idea (can you at least throw Helo in there? Tahmoh was so touched at getting his own episode, even if it WAS dreadful...) and really interesting.

The Woman King had so much potential. ::Sigh::

I could try to squeeze Helo in there. The Helo-Gaeta friendship was really interesting, and I wish we'd seen a bit more of it. (Also? You know what would be REALLY interesting? A Helo-Hoshi conversation, where Hoshi tells Helo some of the stuff about the Pegasus. Or something where Hoshi and Athena have some run-ins, because I can see someone Pegasus generated having issues with Athena, after Gina, and I can see Athena having issues with Hoshi, because of Gina. Add in the Gaeta-Helo friendship, and Gaeta-Athena, and Helo wanting to accept Hoshi because for once his friend has actually chosen someone GOOD for him, for a change, and Hoshi's one of the few people treating Gaeta decently.... Oh, geeze. I might have to write this one now. Thanks. :) )

I have NO objections to them using Helo... just I think they didn't do him justice. (The only thing that saves that episode is Tahmoh takes off his shirt. That's always a good thing.)

Oh, are you going to link to your Romantic Comedies article when it's finished? I love reading film analysis.

Super excited about my first remix! Having a setting, plot, and characters to work with from the get go basically eliminates the hurdles I've been having with writing lately.

I think The Woman King would have worked better with Felix as well. I mean, I was stoked that Tahmoh got his own episode(he seems like a really sweet guy) but the way he was in The Woman King combined with A Measure of Salvation kind of turned me off the character. It would have been nice to see earlier tensions between Adama and Gaeta as well; in their CIC scene in The Oath it seemed like there was a lot of bad blood on both sides that had been there long before Felix lost his leg or got in the raptor of doom.

I've always wanted to rewrite Black Market because the bare bones premise is rather promising but you wouldn't really know it watching the episode.

Sesame Street! Wish I'd watched more of that as a kid...

I'll link when it's posted! It's not overly analytical, to be honest- it's more a quick "Oh, shit, I need an idea" sort of thing- but it was fun to right.

I hope you enjoy your remix assignment, and that it helps you get over the writer's block. Writer's block SUCKS.

Yeah, I don't begrudge Tahmoh his episode... I just wish it had been a better one for him! One of my problems with The Woman King is that it came on the Heels of A Measure of Salvation, and the two together made Helo look annoyingly self-righteous. I mean, I totally get why he did what he did in Measure of Salvation, and although I don't know if I agree with him given the circumstances (it's one thing to commit genocide on an innocent people, it's quite another to do it on a race bent on destroying your race, I think), I think he's also got an extremely valid point. But for me, the big interest for Helo was this unique position he was caught in, where he loved a Cylon and was still human. I'm actually working on a story which will hopefully see the light of day where Helo has a HUGE run-in with Hoshi about the subject.

I agree that the bare bones premise of Black Market is interesting- I'd love to see what you could do with that!

Yay, remix! I'm so excited!!

Come to think of it, it is really odd that they chose Helo, one of the few main characters who had absolutely nothing to do with New Caprica, for a story about something bad that humans did to each other on New Caprica. I think there are a lot of other stories that would've been better for a Helo-centric episode, and I think there are a lot of other characters who would've fit TWK better, Gaeta of course being high on that list. I hope you do this someday, because it does sound interesting. Though of course, I hope you get to all of those bunnies soon. ;)

And Chapter 4 is hard, for reasons that will be obvious soon enough.

Oh boy, I should go get more kleenex now, huh? I am going to keep my mouth shut, but I have a feeling I might have a guess as to what this is...yep, more kleenex...

I'm pretty sure you're right as to what it is, even though I don't know what your guess is. But I think you might know the original prompt, and if you know that and why TWK is heavy on my mind right now... yeah. Get the kleenex :)

The Helo-Hoshi one is nibbling really, really hard right now. But I'm getting time off- so WHOOHOO! I'm so gone :)

Glad you finally got some sleep.

I'm excited about the Remix! I almost didn't sign up (since the muses have been giving me so much trouble lately), but I seem to do my best writing when I'm on a deadline. Can't wait to see what everyone comes up with.

Re Woman King . . . I'd never thought about that before, but yes. Definitely yes. The whole "mayor of Dogville" assignment would make so much more sense for someone in Gaeta's job rather than, say, a pilot (who, according to earlier seasons, should be flying 15 hour CAP's just to maintain security). I never really bought Helo as the outsider--it just doesn't feel like him. Plus, they'd already established the Gaeta/Dee friendship dynamic, so the end would have felt less like rescuing a damsel in distress and more like helping a friend. I don't begrudge Tahmoh the "Save the Girl" trope--it helped get him his roll on Dollhouse, which was awesome--but it says something that when people talk about TWK, they talk about Tahmoh as opposed to, say, Helo.

Psst . . . bunnies. See Lissa? Go catch.

Yeah, Helo the outsider... well, it worked, but not in this context. I would have liked to see more about Helo trying to balance Athena vs. the Fleet. If I can do that bunny with Helo and Hoshi, it will really bring out what I think is interesting about him. I love the idea that Hoshi is angry and doesn't want anything to do with Athena- we never see him actually voice an opinion on the Cylons, so he really could go any way you want- and then Helo is kind of stuck in a hard place because he loves Athena and he cares deeply about Gaeta, and this is the first time in a long time Gaeta's been happy and with someone that is good for him. But the whole human vs. human thing... that would have been a better plot for Gaeta. Or hell, for DEE. (Although I liked the use of Dee there, too, since we knew she was one of the few Sagittarons in the Fleet, and the fact that Robert COULD treat her with compassion because she was "one of the good ones". It added an extra layer to Dr. Robert that I found fascinating.)

Yay, Hoshi backstory!!

Also, I think The Woman King would be AWESOME with Felix. He'd keep having New Caprica flashbacks! He cares so much about these people already!

(Although I didn't really mind it with Helo--he is sort of one of the most self-righteous. And yet, not wrong (see also re: genocide).)

(they really did drop the ball on integrating the Pegasus folks into Galactica. After they spent a good chunk of time showing us how different the two groups were!)

Holy crap, I still haven't read most of last year's remixes. (they're near the top of the "fic to read" pile, it's just....why do I have to work all the tiiime?) Must get on that.
