Success!!!!! I have found a chocolate chip cookie recipe that I think I like!!!! WHOOHOO!!!! All praise Alton Brown.

Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookies
(thanks to the Best Recipe)
2 cups plus 2 tbsp ap flour
1/2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
3/4 cup butter (12 tbsp), melted and cooled until just warm
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup white sugar
1 egg
1 egg yolk
2 tsp vanilla extract
1 1/4 cups chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 325F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda and salt.
In a large bowl, whisk together butter and sugars. Beat in the egg, egg yolk and vanilla. Stir in flour mixture, followed by chocolate chips.
Drop by (scant) 1/4 cups onto the baking sheet and pat lightly so the cookie is an even thickness, not a ball shape. Cookies will spread as they bake and this ensures a more even spread.
Bake at 325F for 15-17 minutes, until just turning light brown all over. The edges should only be very slightly more brown, if at all, from the rest of the cookie. Allow cookies to cool before removing them from the baking sheet.
Makes 18-24 large cookies

I'm so not seeing a loss tomorrow on the scale, I suspect. But the kids had fun helping me make the cookies.

BORED TODAY. And everything I'm supposed to write isn't getting me revved and going. Anyone feel like prompting? I never ficlet, time stamp... whatever. I can't promise anything, but like I said, I'm bored.

How do they come out compared to say, toll house? I really like that sort of crispy-chewy mix of the toll house ones but I could be swayed.

I've been tempted to post about my diet (which is actually based off of the one that Alton Brown was talking about- the four list, whole grain/vegetable/good fat thing) which helped me lose five pounds that were really bothering me. It was like, the edge that had tipped me over into uncomfortable in my body and out of being able to fit in my jeans. I don't know how something like that compares to say weight watchers but...

I always have trouble with toll house, to be honest. I'm a good cook, but for some reason my toll house cookies come out flat as paper, with the chips sticking up. These didn't do that. They were a pretty good crisp-chewy mix, actually. Crispy around the edges, chewy in the center. Not cakey, which is something I liked today.

I'm not familiar with Alton Browns diet- I just went looking for CCC recipes that had the same amount of butter as I had in the house :) Although that sounds fairly similar to the Core Foods plan that Weight Watchers does. I did the winning points system the first time I did it- I lost 70 pounds on it. I'm basically doing that again, although I've been struggling this week. (I lost the 10 pounds that made me not fit into my jeans, and now that I can again... harder time. Ugh.) I like Weight Watchers- it's basically just "hey, this is that food pyramid you learned about. Remember this?" But I think anything that promotes balanced and healthy eating is a good thing.

Ah, I can commiserate with you on the "nope, not losing weight today" front. I'm not so much dieting as trying to get back on the wagon of reasonable eating+ more exercise, but I just finished off a sizable gelato with no shame. Guess I'll have to just stay an extra ten minutes at the gym today...

Hmm....how about something in the "Space Between Us" 'verse? The building of that bridge over the stream between the Conoy-Gaeta and Gaeta-Hoshi houses? How Sam became an elementary school teacher (and does he coach Pyramid? :) )? Zarek and Racetrack moving into their new, finished house? Skulls the farmer? Todd and Brooks dealing with Hera's nightmares? Gabriel spending the day with his godsfathers? The Tighs finding a fruit suitable for distilling? :) Maybe something in there will pique your interest.

Space Between Us verse is a happy, happy place. I could go there :) Especially with happy things (although I have to admit, I've still been tempted to write Tom and Hoshi walking into a sexual assualt survivors' support group and the general reaction that would cause.)

I'm not sure if Alton Brown is a god or a demon. I've eaten two of those cookies today, and fully plan on eating a third. I think that's a bunch of my points. (But we're going out to the kids favorite place tonight, which generally means garlic bread cheesesteaks. It's NOT a weightloss day :P )

Helo and Gaeta share the last chocolate chip cookie in the universe. Angst, of course.

He'd been on Caprica for over a month, but the layout of the Galactica was so ingrained that Helo had no problem finding where he wanted to go, even though it wasn't a place that he normally went. Helo opened the lab hatch and knocked on the edge of the door. "Hey, Gaeta. You in here?"

Gaeta looked up from the computer. "I'm here," he said.

"Mind if I come in?"

"Go ahead," Gaeta said with a shrug. It wasn't the warmest reception, but it was a hell of a lot more than Helo was getting from anyone else on this boat. He entered the lab tentatively.

"Am I going to die if I touch anything in here?" he asked. "Chemistry wasn't my strong point in school."

"You'll be fine," Gaeta said, typing frantically. "Unless you mess up how I've got things ordered."

"Well, that was really the other thing I meant."

Gaeta finished typing with a flourish and then pushed the keyboard away. "Sorry about that. I was just- frak, Helo! What happened to your face?"

"Nothing," Helo said, rubbing self-consciously at the bruise.

Gaeta snorted. "Nothing my ass. Who did it?" He thought. "Tyrol?"

"You're good, I'll grant you that."

"Yeah, well, the only other guy I know on board who likes to hit people wouldn't have the guts to take you on," Gaeta said bitterly. "Have a seat if you like."

Helo sat down on the offered stool. "It's quiet in here," he said finally. "Peaceful. Not many places on this ship where you can hear yourself think."

"That's part of why I like it."

"You spending a lot of time in here?"

"A fair bit. I take it settling in from Caprica isn't going too well?"

"Something like that," Helo admitted. "I guess I can't complain, but…"

"Yeah. But." Gaeta's smile was sympathetic.

"Hey, listen. I heard some of the bridge bunnies talking about the virus, and something came up."

"I didn't-"

"They said you called her Sharon."

"Oh." Gaeta stopped his protest. "Well," he said finally, "that's her name." His brow furrowed. "Isn't it? Or is it?"

"It is," Helo confirmed. "And I know it's not a big thing. I know it doesn't mean much. But it means a lot to me, and I just wanted to say thank you."

"Don't," Gaeta said uncomfortably.

"Well, if you don't want me to," Helo said, digging into his pocket and pulling out a small package, "I guess I'll have no choice but to eat this cookie by myself."

"Cookie?"

"Chocolate chip," Helo said. "I brought it off Caprica. It's probably a little stale, but it's the last chocolate chip cookie in the known universe." He unwrapped it, and Gaeta eyed it covetously.

"Helo, I can't…"

"You can." Helo pushed it over to him.

"It's… Helo, it's a cookie."

"I know. And I know how you feel about cookies."

Gaeta shook his head. "These days, it's a bribe."

"It's not." Helo was starting to panic. "It's a gift between friends. Look, if it makes you feel better…" he reached over and broke the cookie in half. "I'll eat half, okay?"

Gaeta smiled at him. "All right." He picked up the half that was still on the desk and sniffed it. "Gods," he said. "A cookie. I know I shouldn't eat in the lab, but if I take it out into the hall, I'll be mobbed."

"You can stand to break a few rules," Helo prompted. "At least for a cookie."

"For a cookie," Gaeta agreed, and took a bite. His eyes rolled back into his head. "I should feel guilty," he said around a mouthful of crumbs, "but I don't."

Helo bit into his own half and grinned. "I don't, either."

Helo was eating alone. Felix stood in the door of the mess hall, watching him. He swallowed hard, and then walked over as casually as he could.

He couldn't do it. He walked by Helo's table and sat down by himself, focusing on his food. He felt the eyes of everyone in the mess hall on him, still speculating about the fact he was back in uniform so soon after New Caprica.

It was embarrassing in its way. When Helo had come back up from Caprica, he'd been able to search out Felix. He'd had the guts to do it, to say I know you've got reasons not to like me, but we're supposed to be friends. But no one had tried to throw Helo out of an airlock.

Except maybe Tyrol.

Felix looked at his tray, and swallowed hard. Of all people, of everyone on this ship… he shook his head. He looked back up, and he noticed Helo was watching him.

Waiting.

Do it. Just get up and do it, Felix told himself. He took a deep breath and closed his hands around his dishes… and then noticed what he had on his plate.

He'd been indifferent to food for so long that he hadn't even noticed what he'd picked up from the line, but now he saw it. The site of it, small and unassuming, made him smile and then stand up and make his way over to Helo's table.

He put the cookie on the table and pushed it over. "I know there's no chocolate chips, but it's not half bad, if you want it."

Helo smiled, and picked the cookie up and broke it in half. "We can share."

*wibbles* Oh my god, even in a drabble you can really destroy with an emotion, you know? Oh, I love this so much. It's so perfect.

I lovelovelove how you mirror them, how the cookie connects the years in between.

One typo; "The site of it" should be "The sight of it".

Your feet. I worship at them.

Can I ask for something in your "Here on the Hill" universe? A conversation between John and that brunette Six from The Plan(I'm pretty sure she didn't have a name)on the basestar a week after the exodus?

Oooh, interesting. I'll have to play with that, although it makes me commit to what happened with John- if it was just one copy or if there were different copies.

But your icon? I nearly snarfed at it. I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!! (I used to have one of Scar rolling his eyes and saying "I'm surrounded by idiots" but it never got used.)

I was watching "The Crackpots and These Women" and thought of another prompt:

Early in the Baltar Administration, Chief of Staff Felix Gaeta tries to have a Big Block of Cheese Day.

I'll need to come up with something for that one. That could actually be really, really, REALLY good, especially given the underrepresentation of the rest of the Fleet. ::ponders this, and wonders if she could work Dee and kitten into it.::
