I finally finished the writing meme!
21. Do any of your characters have children? How well do you write them?
In most of my fandoms, the children are adult children, with the exception of the Agathons. I write Hera… well, here's the thing about Hera. She never speaks on the show. Which, on the one hand, could be how Hera is. On the other hand, it could be a reflection of how Ron Moore hates working with children because they can't really be relied on to do things in a timely manner. (I have two children. I understand his point completely.) I think I write Hera as a very accurate three year old, because I base her on Toby, but I don't know that write her as a very accurate Hera. But with little kids, you can get away with it.
I do enjoy writing parent-child interactions, but I feel like I can write teenagers and adult children (like Lee Adama and Bill Adama) fine.
No child characters have emerged in Adamaey Rising yet, and I suspect it's going to largely stay that way. The characters I'm focusing on have unmarried adult children or are the unmarried adult children. But there is a pair of couples I've got on the edge of my mind that three out of the four of them run an orphanage. I don't know how much the kids will play into it, though.
I do have a hard time writing kids that aren't my kids' ages. Outside of my own children and their friends, I don't spend much time around kids. It doesn't matter much anyway- the storylines I write tend to be more adult issues, so unless the kids are important, I actually kind of agree with Ron Moore :) There's a lot of cliched behavior with childhood wisdom that I prefer to avoid, so… yeah.
22. Tell us about one scene between your characters that you've never written or told anyone about before! Serious or not.
Hmmm. I talk a lot, so this is hard.
Harry Potter: Accidentally In Love. Damien Lupin was going to be the Auror who arrested Sirius, and the one who took him to Azkaban without a trial. I think that sort of behavior – especially knowing that Sirius hurt Remus – is totally in character for Damien, and because it's Damien rejecting him, who Sirius loved so much, it was going to really take a lot of the wind from Sirius's sails. And because everyone in the Ministry knew that Damien and Sirius were close, the fact that Damien could believe it convinced a lot of skeptics.
However, Remus wasn't going to be happy about it, and cue a huge argument that led to years and years of estrangement between Damien and Remus. (I came up with Damien not long after JKR released Scrimgeour's description, but we didn't know who he was.)
I also had this Lost Years fic idea where Remus was serving as a tutor to a wizard child who had Down's Syndrome, and spent time teaching him to control his magic. Also, if I ever had ever had the chance to remix
copperbadge, I would have done "Stealing Harry" and set it in the AIL universe. Just Damien's presence alone would be a big change to the story.
BSG: The Struggles Make You Stronger: The next chapter is going to focus on Hoshi's introduction to the military, and how lonely it is for him once everyone discovers he's Sagittaron. He also gets involved in an extremely inappropriate romance with a superior officer MOC. It should be fun
BSG: The Space Between Us: I forgot this one! Gage did not survive long. Adama wouldn't execute him, but once Tom became President, one of the first things he did after the Galactica and the Fleet were reunited was put Gage in an airlock. I don't know exactly how this plays out, but he either offered Louis the chance to press the button, or he decided that where Louis was in his healing process, pushing the button would be a step back. But I think it might have been Felix who pushed the button, because hey, yes, Felix is furious about what happened to Louis, and that’s something I never really got to address.
Adamaey Rising: One scene I KNOW that happens is that Aman keeps bitching (in the tone of an old joke) about how if they had to be thrust so far into their future and have this miserable existence and now live on a space station with lasers and space ships and all that, the least that the universe could do is give him a light saber. And he does get his light saber (a character named Sabrina happens on an outdated weapon that's very similar to one at a market type thing.)
23. How long does it usually take you to complete an entire story—from planning to writing to posting (if you post your work)?
The longest completely one was probably 4-6 months for The Space Between Us or A Lot to Live Up To.
The shortest was a matter of hours for Ten Galleons.
24. How willing are you to kill your characters if the plot so demands it? What's the most interesting way you've killed someone?
Oh, hell yes. I throw bricks. Of course I kill people. I usually don't do it very interestingly, though. I think they're almost always killed in battle though. Let's see, a short sampling…
Alphard Black- executed via the Veil
Marilyn Lupin- died from wounds related to torture
Sirius's father- I think dementia, I forget how I killed him
Let the Water Hold You Down!Sirius – killed by James to keep him from being tortured further
Let the Water Hold You Down!James – killed by Peter to keep him from being tortured
Let the Water Hold You Down!Remus – killed by Voldemort defending Peter and Harry
Caradoc Dearborn- We don't know how he died, but we found out he became a zombie
Narcho – executed by Adama in pretty much every variation
A Lot to Live Up To!Hoshi – died of recurring acute myleoid leukemia eventually, although he killed himself via poison rather than go through the whole course of the disease.
Not Where I Belong!Hoshi – took Dee's place as the suicide
Here On the Hill!John – "died" in the NCP bombing
The Space Between Us!Helo – Died during the Colony Rescue
The Space Between Us!Athena – Died playing out the Opera House vision
The Space Between Us!Tory – Executed by Adama and the Cylons for mutiny
The Space Between Us!Roslin – Died of cancer
The Space Between US!Cottle – Died of a heart attack or something. ::sigh::
The Space Between Us!Jaffee and Sian – killed during the hostage situation
The Space Between Us!Thornton – shot by Cavil in the CIC
The Space Between Us!Cavil – shot by the Tighs
The Space Between Us!Boomer and Tyrol – died detonating a nuke on the Colony
The Space Between Us!Vireem – shot by Hoshi (along with a Marine, and another marine shot by Athena)
The Space Between Us!Gage – executed quietly via airlock
Not Where I Belong!Racetrack – attached her Raptor to the Colony via maglocks and blew it up.
Our Very Special Guest Stars!Gage and Vireem – killed via airlock after trying to eat Miss Piggy.
25. Do any of your characters have pets? Tell us about them.
Nope. For one, I go for space these days, and pets and space isn't really the best combination. But for two, I'm not a huge animal person. I like animals. I get why people have pets, and I understand very, very well that pets are a huge part of people's lives. (We used to have a dog, and I adored her.) But I don't really have the time or patience for pets these days, and it would be cruel for me to keep one, and they just aren't a priority in my life. That gets reflected in my writing.
26. Let's talk art! Do you draw your characters? Do others draw them? Pick one of your OCs and post your favorite picture of him!
I don't. Sorry.
27. Along similar lines, do appearances play a big role in your stories? Tell us about them, or if not, how you go about designing your characters.
Not really. I try to keep the majority of my characters fairly average looking. Some might be more attractive than others, others less, but it's rare that anyone is hideously ugly or incredibly beautiful.
I was trying to write out some thoughts about writing characters of color here, but I'm not sure that I want to go there. (And as a disclaimer, I realize characters of color can go far, far beyond appearance and into culture, or it can not. It really depends.) Because frankly, I'm very bad at this sort of meta, and I usually say something stupid without meaning to. Suffice to say, I'm trying to become more conscious of this in my writing, although with my original stuff, that's not that hard to do- although it can require extensive research to carry out, since many of my characters come from countries (which yes, NOT APPEARANCE) very different than the one I live in.
28. Have you ever written a character with physical or mental disabilities? Describe them, and if there's nothing major to speak of, tell us a few smaller ones.
Physical disabilities: yes- a few. B'rone, one my blueriders in my Pern days, was a rider who used to be a runner and injured his leg so badly that they didn't think he'd walk again. It led to two of my favorite stories from that Weyr that I wrote. One was called "Settling for Less", which dealt with how he coped with the loss and ended up falling for his best non-gay friend. The other, "Fly", took three of my characters (and one of Sue's) and put them on a swimming relay together. It was a very healing story for a lot of the characters, and it was actually a lot of fun to write. I also had a brownrider, Dh'mor, who had half of his face scarred very badly. He was missing an eye and he slurred his speech a lot when he talked. I never was able to do much with it though, because the people he lived around just dealt with these injuries. Then, of course, there's Gaeta and Tigh. I've never dealt much with Tigh's loss of an eye, but I've certainly done a fair bit with Gaeta's leg. And in Adamaey Rising, one of the characters has a limp, one's missing an eye, and several others will probably have severe scarring. Oh! And Hoshi had acute myleoid leukemia in the one universe, which it depends on where he is if that's a disability or not, and for the most part, I don't write much about the treatments.
Mental disabilities: for the most part, no. I've written people with psychological conditions, most notably bulimia. I wrote Lee Adama as being clinically depressed during the New Caprica arc in A Lot to Live Up To. And, of course, pretty much everyone in BSG has got SOME sort of PTSD. I love the line where Cottle says if he could, he'd ground em all. They ALL need it.
29. How often do you think about writing? Ever come across something IRL that reminds you of your story/characters?
All. The. Time. There are always stories and characters in my head, to the point where I don't know what to do with myself if there are not.

Also, FRINGE YAY! There definitely needs to be more squee about it on my flist.

Date: 2010-05-18 06:30 pm (UTC)Plus, there still needs to be crossover fic where Astrid and Felix meet. I am determined!

Date: 2010-05-18 03:23 am (UTC)What's the general premise of Fringe?
no subject
Date: 2010-05-18 06:37 pm (UTC)Fringe is a sort-of X-Files show, I think. Investigating extremely weird science (although not aliens), other dimensions, etc. There's an overarching plotline that goes with Walter, who did a lot of not-so-ethical work, but it's not overwhelming. There's a lot of monster-of-the-week episodes as well.
One of the things I really like about Fringe is they successfully flipped the gender dynamics. The lead is Olivia, who's an FBI agent. She's very logical, very reserved, very not-people oriented, very ambitious and goal driven and "I will do what's right." She's a great shot, she runs down criminals, she fights hand-to-hand, and she's really, really smart with lots of common sense. Then there's Peter, who's much more emotional, much more flip, and really quite good with people. I am currently desperately hoping they don't hook the two of them up. Peter takes care of his father Walter, who, thanks to a lot of his unethical research (and copious amounts of mind-altering substances) is dealing with a lot of mental trauma. He's a brilliant scientist, but definitely crazy.
I've also been (personally) quite happy with how they've handled women in the show. In addition to Olivia being the big lead, the head of the Morally Ambiguous Corporation is female, and she's an utterly fascinating character as well. The whole thing is really coming off pretty well done. The overall arc might not stand up too well if you examine it too closely, but if you don't, it's lots of fun :)

Date: 2010-05-19 01:34 am (UTC)I liked Deny Thy Father! Yeah, you've improved as a writer since then, but that doesn't mean there's anything wrong with your old stuff. You still completely drew me into the story- and story is definitely your strong point, because I can just sit forever reading your stuff, even the old stuff, just letting myself find out what happens. :) I love that.
Of course the end of Mentors kicked me right in the gut, the way you do. I saw Alphard's letter and just broke.
And can I just say that there are certain similarities between your tale and my old RP that just crack me up? Like Peter being the most laid, initially. Or the dynamic between Sirius and Lily.
And oh man, I'm only four chapters in, and I really want you to write the part where Damien is the one to apprehend Sirius, I really do.
So, now that I've hit the point you posted on LJ, expect copious amounts of comments.
And Fringe does sound interesting! I'm all for frakking with gender roles. I may have to give it a chance. I don't tend to expect super-awesomeness from shows like this (not the way I did with BSG, y'know?) so I can probably just sit back and enjoy the dynamics even if the plot isn't always the strongest.
