Jun. 8th, 2010 11:01 am::Frustrated:: So, I finally began my
femgenficathon fic. My quote is interesting, but kind of tough.
do authors who write Indian romances love the nation they endeavour successfully or unsuccessfully to describe? Do they, like Tecumseh, say, "And I, who love your nation, which is just, when deeds deserve it," or is the Indian introduced into literature but to lend a dash of vivid colouring to an otherwise tame and somber picture of colonial life? It looks suspiciously like the latter reason, or why should the Indian always get beaten in the battles of romance, or the Indian girl get inevitably the cold shoulder in the wars of love? -- Pauline Johnson (Tekahionwake--literally "double life" ) (1861-1913) Mohawk Canadian poet, short story writer, journalist and performer.
It's about othering. And let's face it- I am a blond, white woman in a heterosexual marriage. Let's just say at first glance, I don't end up in this position often. And yes, I don't have the first problem with writing about a girl that doesn't look like me, but some of those things aren't supposed to matter in BSG canon. And of course, I writer draws on their own experiences, their own memories. When have I wished that there have been women like me on TV? Then it hit me. I'm not skinny. And good god, do we not-skinny girls EVER get much of a shake in the media? Ooh! I could write about that, right?
Except, no. Because, unless I'm forgetting something, there is no major female character on BSG that would fit this description- even in the civilian sector. (And don't tell me it's because they're military. Not all of those guys are perfectly thin, although I'll accept that for the non-rankers.) There are very few minor ones, that people would recognize, either. The best I can come up with is Elosha or Sarah Porter, neither of whom are perfectly skinny. Irony, much, here? Sheesh.
Even switching fandoms.... I could go for Molly Weasley, Professor Sprout, or Augusta Longbottom. But my story idea doesn't seem to work as well with them. There's Dollhouse, but Mellie isn't really one I can get a strong handle on because she's not Mellie for that long. (And yes, Miracle Laurie is apparently really skinny in real life, but on the show she looks like she's my size. Except I'm not that tall.) Firefly? Nope. West Wing? Nope, except maybe the Secretary of Defense, Nancy McNally. (I don't think I can write the Secretary of Defense well though.) Buffy? Can't think of anyone. LOST? HA! Caprica? Nope.
So, so much for that idea. And then I thought, "well, what about women in science? I could do something with that- the idea that the scientific woman is always plain and boring and masculine and doesn't get the guy." Yeah, that's not working out so well, either. The human scientists on BSG are all (all- heh- there aren't that many of them) male. (I don't mind this one as much, because there are only two scientist characters- Baltar and Gaeta- and to be fair to the writers, lots of women on the show clearly have a technical bent to their interests. And this is not a story I want to do with Cylons.) Oh, wait! Ellen and Tory were scientists! But we know so little about their previous lives, I don't feel like I'm writing Ellen and Tory, you know?
Although... wait. Now, wait a minute, here. Now, what about that? We have no idea what Ellen thought she was on the Colonies, but since none of the other five thought they were scientists, it's a fair bet to think that Ellen didn't, either. Hmmm. Maybe something where Ellen deals with her scientist background being stripped away from her? Except, to be fair to Saul, he never shows any signs of loving her more because she's less scientific. Although other men could. Ellen remembers both when she was a scientist and when she was not- I could do something with how people respond to her. However, most of that response is going to be sexual, because it's Ellen.
Even in West Wing, it's hard. CJ's the Press Secretary for most of the series. Abby's a medical doctor, but that seems to have more acceptance. Again, the one I keep coming back to is Nancy McNally, because a woman as Secretary of Defense? Her interests would make her feel that othering. But like I said, Nancy McNally's not a character I can get a good handle on for some reason. (Kate Harper might be another good example, here.) But I think writing Sorkin is tough for me. (The Sports Night ladies could be fascinating here, too, but it's been so long since I've watched Sports Night.)
I'm basically planning on going with Dee. Dee's not only Sagittaron (and we all know how much I love writing Sagittarons), but she's a girl with a clear geek streak. I can do both things in one fell swoop. (I'm not touching the actress's race, because the characters don't seem to remotely care about what color Dee's skin is. They probably do/did care about what planet the character is from, though.) But Dee's interesting, too, in that she embraces one of those things (geek) and rejects the other (Sagittaron). My idea is I want to do something with art- particularly novels- where Dee starts out loving romance novels on general principal, and then as she grows up and starts understanding more, gets frustrated. I'm not sure how to end the fic, though.
Here, bunnies, bunnies, bunnies....
My writing bunnies are being lazy. They're showing up, but they won't tell me how they end. I hate that.

femgenficathon fic (Dee and romance novels)
The girls whispered about it in the locker rooms, in the halls, at lunch. Pretty soon everyone who was anyone knew about the scene on page 73, where the heroine gave the hero a blow job (Dee had never even heard of a blow job before that point, and frankly, the whole thing sounded disgusting) and the scene on page 121, where the heroine gave up her virginity in phrases like lacy wisps of her underwear, his powerful manhood thrust into her, and her wet garden, ready and fertile for his seed that spurted forth.

puszysty, who wanted Narcho, Dee, Felix, and Louis on their ranch.
When Noel had joked about his ranch/garage business… thing, he'd envisioned it differently. For one, he'd really meant it about the ranch part, because he'd been to the dusty, windswept farm where Louis had grown up. But both Louis and Dee insisted they had absolutely no interest in horses, cattle, or whatever other animals Noel could imagine putting on a ranch.

"You're really okay with taking away their free will?" Sharon asked.
Helo shrugged. "Not sure it's any worse than putting them in front of the firing squad. I mean, if they were going to be making them into prostitutes or humiliating them somehow, I'd put my foot down. But if this does what Adama and Roslin want it to do, Gaeta and Zarek could be heroes." He sighed. "After what they've done, it's as close to redemption as they're going to get."
"Yeah, well, redemption doesn't mean anything unless you make the choice yourself," Sharon said. "Believe me. I know."
-The Struggles Make You Stronger
"You will not, ever, ever stare at me like I am a freak again," she ordered.
"Yes, sir."
"And you will not do it to anyone else, either."
"Yes, sir." Louis hung his head.
"Stop that," Helena said impatiently. "As long as we're clear-"
"We're clear. I'm sorry."
"Well, then." Helena softened a bit. "Have you had breakfast?" she asked. Louis shook his head. "Me neither. Let's make some."
They didn't talk, but as he fried the bacon and Helena mixed up pancake batter, he could feel them both relaxing. By the time they had breakfast on the table, Louis was starting to feel better. He felt even better when he cut into the pancakes. Helena had put chocolate chips in them.
-The House That Tom Built
"Never thought I'd do this," Tom admitted gruffly.
"You still may," Felix pointed out. "If Ractr- if Maggie has a boy."
The corners of Tom's eyes crinkled as he smiled. "You can still call her Racetrack. There. I think I got it."
"Looks like it." Felix tugged experimentally at the flower. "Looks good. Shall we?"
"We shall." But neither of them moved quite yet. Instead, they stood, still close together.

"Tell me you didn't have my picture on your ceiling."
Gaeta laughed. "No offense, but no. I'm not much of a Pyramid fan. I always took more to the boxers. And those who wear them," he said with an arch smile. His smile faded. "But my brother wanted to play professionally. I don't know that he ever would have, but he wanted to." Jean nodded. "I'm more interested in your recent adventures," Gaeta said. "Starbuck said that you all had formed a guerrilla resistance movement on Caprica?"
-Teacher's Pet
"Can I ask why?" Laura asked gently. "I glanced through your file, and there wasn't so much as a disciplinary measure in there."
"Because there's nothing left anymore," Noel said simply. "There hasn't been much for a long time, but at least there was something to fight. And there still is, but we're not allowed to fight it. The only thing I've been living for…" he shrugged and laughed bitterly. "That sounds like a bad soap opera, doesn't it?"
-The House that Built Me
The walk through the corridors served a purpose today. Not necessarily a purpose that would be smiled on by the Ones- in fact, the Four was pretty sure he could get himself boxed over this. But boxing didn't matter, not any more. Now that they were here and so close and he had the information he did, he had to know. That desire to learn, to study, to understand resonated too strongly within him to be ignored. And this was as far as he'd ever gone. He stopped, took a deep breath, and then continued his walk, his footsteps accents of sound against the bare corridors.

"What are you naming him?" he asked.
"What do you think?" Rebecca said, not looking away from the baby's face.
"Louis," Tom said softly.
Rebecca finally glanced at him. "Is that okay with you?" she asked.
For a moment, Tom couldn't talk. Their father had been dead for five years, but right now, when he should be here to see his first grandchild, the loss felt especially heavy. He took a few deep breaths and cleared his throat. "Yeah," he finally said, flushing as his voice cracked. "I'm glad."
And, since I'm here....
TV meme, day 24: Best quote
Really? I have to choose? Well, here are five:

"We have done the impossible, and that makes us mighty." -Mal Reynolds. This is a GREAT running quote.

"My name is Saul Tigh. I'm an officer in the Colonial Fleet. Whatever else I am, whatever else it means, that's the man I want to be. And if I die today, that's the man I'll be." -Saul Tigh

"This guy's walking down the street when he falls in a hole. The walls are so steep he can't get out. A doctor passes by and the guy shouts up, 'Hey you. Can you help me out?' The doctor writes a prescription, throws it down in the hole and moves on. Then a priest comes along and the guy shouts up, 'Father, I'm down in this hole can you help me out?' The priest writes out a prayer, throws it down in the hole and moves on. Then a friend walks by, 'Hey, Joe, it's me can you help me out?' And the friend jumps in the hole. Our guy says, 'Are you stupid? Now we're both down here.' The friend says, 'Yeah, but I've been down here before and I know the way out.'" -Leo McGarry

"You don't get to tell me what I can't do!" -John Locke

"In every generation, one slayer is born...because a bunch of men who died thousands of years ago made up that rule. They were powerful men. This woman is more powerful than all of them combined"
And while it's not in the same category, how can anyone ever forget....

"I'm not suggesting anything Doctor. If I want to throw a baby out an airlock I'll do it." -Laura Roslin
