lls_mutantOoooh yeah. Finally got to watch it. :) And wow, does it look good.
I agree that Sirius is... um, between the flaming head, the mustache, and the devil in the walls... does Steve Kloves have a major problem with Sirius talking like a normal person? He was pretty direct in the books. "Karakoff's a Death Eater." Personally, I've got enough faith in Gary Oldman that he still could have sounded pretty deranged saying that as "the devil is in the walls" or whatever. :P No more Steve Kloves after Goblet- YAY!
But aside from that, I am PSYCHED for this movie. For one, it will be the last movie I see in the theaters for a while, unless we can get the grandparents to take Toby while we go see The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. GoF comes out November 18, and I'm due the 25th, so it'll be a close one. But more than that, I seriously think GoF will be the best of the movies so far- and probably of at least the next two, too. Not only have the kids grown up enough that they can act much better, but GoF has the plot that's really the most condusive to a movie. I know JKR didn't write it to become a movie (as evidenced by OotP, which I think will be harder to make a movie out of), but the Triwizard Tournament is a nice, linear plot that will make an ideal flick.

marauderthesn that the girl playing Fleur is pretty, but not quite veela pretty, but I wonder just how you would make someone veela-pretty. It would be hard. Maybe a little more sparkle, and her hair should be more silver, but hey. It still baffles me that there are people out there that are angry an Asian actress is playing Cho Chang. What other kind of actress would you get for a girl named Cho Chang? Honestly? And Katie Leung is EXTREMELY pretty- she's absolutely perfect for Cho. (I actually really like Cho and thought the poor girl really got a raw deal in fandom after OotP. No, she's not perfect, but Harry really screwed up too. And Hermione was right- poor Cho was really going through a LOT.) And Dumbledore actually sounding pissed at Harry... lovely. But what I'm DYING to see is how Daniel Radcliff and Rupert Grint handle the fight between Ron and Harry. Although that fight is hard to read sometimes, I absolutely love it in the books and would hate to see that goofed up.
It feels like this director continued in the same vein as Cuaron, which is great. I REALLY liked the feel of PoA, so the grittier, more realistic Hogwarts (y'know, for a magical school) really goes over well with me. The Beauxbatons carriage is awesome (especially Hagrid directing the way!), and the Durmstrang ship.... And I can't wait to see the dragon. And the scene with Voldemort's ressurection...
GoF has actually always been my favorite book of the six, narrowly edging out PoA and OotP. Harry-wise, it IS my favorite book, except maybe HBP. (I really liked Harry in HBP.) But I suppose, given that, it's no wonder I'm psyched for this movie! :)

Date: 2005-09-17 05:11 am (UTC)GoF is my favourite book too. But I already know most of my favourite stuff won't be in it. I want a good Ron and Harry fight, but I don't know how it could possibly work with Ron's current movie character.
I haven't seen the people who are upset that Cho is being played by an Asian in the HP fandom. I have seen the people that hate Cho, and then bring in her ethnicity to use it against her...but no calls for white actresses.
In the Asian community—yeah, I run with the hardcore so…it’s all pretty much “serves her right for being a sellout”. I won’t call her a sellout, because it would break all my old records of hypocrisy.
But there is no reason for an AF to be cast as Cho. Cho isn’t there for multiculturalism, she isn’t shown to suffer racism, she doesn’t participate in her culture, she doesn’t mention what the WW is like outside of mainstream Britishy white stuff. All that is “Asian” about her is her name. And her name doesn’t even make sense. I have heard a few people manage to translate it in Chinese and Japanese, but to everyone, it is going to sound like a bad Korean-Chinese double-last-name blend, with that added horrible “Ching Chong” sort of feel. Why can’t a white kid be called “Cho Chang”? It makes just as much sense, since you won’t ever find a real Asian called “Cho Chang” anyway, and it isn’t as racist.
Also, it would help cut down on 2 WM/AF relationships. (Ooo…I remember some kid being like “Oh, Cho dates a black kid before Harry Potter, so it isn’t totally stereotypical”…and I had to bite my tongue because I was trying to hide most of my geekyness …) I don’t want to go too much into it, because I realize that I date almost exclusively white, some WM, so I am a sellout too. But GoF, with all the AF/WM crushes and not one AM in any of the books, sort of bothers me a little. I realize this is relative, but Cho, really, is not pretty to most of the people I know. She is not ugly like Lucy Liu, she is pretty average…but it reminds me of the old Asiaphilic sort of deal where as long as she is Asian, Hollywood will play her up as a sex symbol.
Yeah, I’ll have to see it at the cheap show now. I don’t want to be even more of a hypocrite and give all that money to the movie. Bah. I hate being caught between my desires and my conscience.

As far as Cho goes- I thought she was really cute, actually. I mean, I'm a married 30 year old woman, so I'm not the best judge, but she looked almost exactly how I pictured her.
It's not so much that she's Asian- I mean, I never got the feeling the Asian roots are supposed to be a part of her character. But for me, with a name like Cho Chang, I did immediately start picturing a girl of some Oriental descent, and I like the actors they cast to look like the pictures in my head. (I could rant for hours about Lupin's mustache, and have been known to do so.) I don't think it's remotely a sell-out issue, but the same thing as "JKR has said Harry's eyes are green 8,567 times throughout the series, and that he has very messy hair. Could we stick with that description, PLEASE?"

Katie isn't bad looking--I think people got their hopes up with BoA (where did that rumor come from? Was BoA ever in the running, as a non-Brit?), and Heart Evangelista (Who I think is hapa, I don't know.). Katie's average. If I saw her walking down the street, I would not look twice. Her face can be cute and the right angle. Meh. She's not going to be the next Hollywood Hawtie. Like, ever. But neither is that Fleur actress, and no one rants and gives her any shit. (Do they?) It isn’t fair to pick on Leung.

The "sellout" bit has nothing to do with her being an average-looking Asian girl. It has to do with agreeing to star in a movie where you know you are going to be dating WM. The Asian Communities I hang with are very sensitive about WM stealing our women. If that makes sense?

I think your characterizations are wonderful and admire your writing in general, I've probably liked every one of your fics that I've read. So, er, keep up the good work! :)
Anyway, hope it's ok to friend you, no need to friend back naturally (I just keep the journal for watching anyway). I'm no good at reviewing so you probably won't see me around, but I just thought you should know I'm lurking about somewhere and appreciating your writing. :)

How come people are upset cause an asian girl is playing Cho? I've always imagined her to be asian...
And about Fleur. She's not supposed to be THAT pretty all the time, she sort of switchs the Veela charm on and off...Or at least that's what I thought...I think the TT champions all look awesome. Though Cedric looks kinda girlish.
The only new character that looks nothing like I pictured it to be is Madam Maxime...I dunno, she just looks like a giant transvestite or something.
That part where McGonagall tells Ron to put his hand on her waist...Too funny.
Gah I can't wait till it's out! I'll probably watch it a thousand times x3 *is hyper*

And sort of the same goes for Cho...*people saying she's not that pretty* We see everything through Harry's POV, so of course he'll think she's the prettiest girl ever cause he has a crush on her. I think she is pretty, but not THAT much.
