Happy Halloween!
Oct. 31st, 2005 08:54 amShort entry, because I have a ton to do today. I REALLY need to get this paper finished. Desperately. Plus the nursery needs to be done by this weekend, and oh yeah, I'm sure over half my f-list is doing what I'm doing- frantically working on fics for
sirius_loving! But I have two recs, so posting I am. Both recs have perhaps some tiny, tiny elements of shipping, but frankly, I'd call them both utterly gen.
First up is Birthday Musings by
topaz_eyes. I love her work anyway- she writes older R/S with a focus on emotional interaction and plot as opposed to sex, and her boys are actually BOYS. Well, men. Emotionally constipated, not at all sappy, and utterly stubborn. Birthday Musings deals with Peter's birthday, and Remus and Sirius actually discussing Peter during the OotP timeframe. It's not something that people write much, and she does it so well. It's complicated and sticky and messy, just like it should be.
The other rec is The Littlest Soldiers by
theregoesyamum/There Goes My Gun. It's a very stark look at a teenaged (and eventually adult) Remus trying to cope with the emotional aftereffects of Fenrir Greyback's attack. There's things I do feel deserve a warning: I would call this very comparable to reading a fic about surviving child molestation. It's not remotely graphic, but as I said, the emotions are very stark and very real, and I always feel like that sort of thing should be warned for. Also, Remus strikes up a relationship with a young Tonks. Personally, I don't find this squicky at all because the end of the story is in no way romantic, but some people might. Again, though, Remus is very realistic here- very masculine and real, without being melodramatic. As mentioned, there are no explicit details of Greyback's attack or anything else, but that only works better in the fic.
So two great (although anything but cheery!) reads that popped up on my flist in the past 24 hours. Enjoy!
Also, today Mutant Reviewers is having HallowHorrorWeen, which features about 8-10 horror reviews. If you're into horror movies, it's a fun way to waste a half hour or so! (My choice was one of the few horror movies I actually like: Signs.)
And happy Halloween to all!!!!
