Merry Christmas!
Dec. 24th, 2005 03:40 pmA day early, but... Merry Christmas/happy holidays to everyone! (Hmmm. I really should have made myself a Christmas icon. Oh well. I'll use my default since the scene took place at Christmas anyway.) I hope everyone has a happy, peaceful, healthy holiday.
I don't have time to actually write anything myself, so I'm going to post the Christmas song that's the most on my mind, and the one I've been singing to Toby as a lullaby. I think, given the recent years we've had, there's a lot to be said for
Belleau Wood (Garth Brooks)
Oh, the snowflakes fell in silence
Over Belleau Wood that night
For a Christmas truce had been declared
By both sides of the fight
As we lay there in our trenches
The silence broke in two
By a German soldier singing
A song that we all knew.
Though I did not know the language
The song was "Silent Night"
Then I heard my buddy whisper
"All is calm, all is bright"
Then the fear and doubt surrounded me
'Cause I'd die if I was wrong
But I stood up in my trench
And I began to sing along
Then across the frozen battle field
Another's voice joined in
Until one by one each man became
The singer of a hymn
Then I thought that I was dreaming
For right there in my sight
Stood the German soldier
Beneath the falling flakes of white
And he raised his hand and smiled at me
As if he seemed to say
"Here's hoping we both live to see us
Find another way
Then the devil's clock struck midnight
And the skies lit up again
And the battle field where Heaven stood
Was blown to Hell again
But for just one fleeting moment
The answer seemed so clear
Heaven's not beyond the clouds,
It's just beyond the fear
No, Heaven's not beyond the clouds,
It's for us to find right here.
If you don't know the lyrics to Garth Brooks' "Belleau Wood", they're absolutely gorgeous and based on a true instance in WW I (I think?). So Peace on Earth and Good Will to All!!!!

Date: 2005-12-25 01:44 am (UTC)Yes, it did happen - both German and Allied troops held an impromptu cease-fire at Christmas in 1914. They sang carols, lit candles and played football between the trenches. So sad that the war didn't end then and there....
Hello, incidentally. I first came upon your journal after reading "Midnight Conversations" (still one of my favourite pieces of fanfic!) and have been hanging around ever since..... Belated congratulations on Toby's safe arrival and I hope you and your family have a very merry Christmas. :)
