While this rec is from the [livejournal.com profile] shackinup_sesa list, I'd encourage everyone to read most of it, or at least Part 1. It's Our Private Universe, by [livejournal.com profile] busaikko.

The reason I'm pointing this particular story out is because [livejournal.com profile] busaikko played with a concept I'd been wanting to play with, and that was senility in the Wizarding World. (Incidentally, she did it much better than what I'd planned, although I may still continue with my fic IF inspiration hits.) [livejournal.com profile] busaikko took Mr. Lupin and made him senile from an overexposure to magic, and one of the reasons Remus was acting so oddly the first war was because he was caring for his father. This is technically R/S, and pretty explicitly so. If you're into R/S, it's wonderful :) If you're not, read up to January 1 anyway, because frankly, up until then it could count as gen. But the aspects of dealing with senility in the Wizarding World... they're painfully and subtly done.

Please go read!

ETA: Dumb question, but still. Brits: when you talk about your height, what units of measurement do you use? I know people talk about their weight in kilos, but I'm not sure on the height. This would be talking to a doctor, btw. Or close enough.

hmmm

we use feet, the metrication stuff didn't really swamp the UK until the late 1070s/early 1980s, if i remember correctly. Magazines will say stuff in metres (but some will put the imperial measurement in brackets).

The Brits also still refer to their weight in stones (14lbs =1stone). We still use miles as distances (side by side with the kilometers). But with the EU getting all homogenous and everything, I can actually see Britain having to fall into line, like evenutally driving on the right side of the road!

THANK YOU. I've been meaning to ask for ages how much a "stone" was.

no worries!

:)

Erm, LLS, I meant to say 1970/early 1980 instead of 1070. Forgive.

Thanks muchly! (And I figured you meant 1970 ;) ) It's WW II era, so feet and inches sounds good. It's not a major part of the story, just... it had to come up. Thanks!
