Quick update
Jan. 30th, 2006 10:39 amOh, thank God. We're back. This weekend was both wonderful and a nightmare. The short version: we went up to Albany. Toby was fine the entire trip, and actually for the past three nights has slept 8 hour stretches. Whoohoo! We introduced him to my grandmother, in something I want to post properly. It was absolutely lovely.
The nightmare came Sunday, when we got a call saying my grandmother had been taken to the hospital. That's not the nightmare part- she actually came back after that. (She'd been unresponsive, but it seemed like nothing was discernably wrong.) I went back to the house to eat and get packed at get my husband and son, and then we went up to Grandma's place one more time to say goodbye. We found her on the floor as we walked in. Apparently she'd tried to get out of her chair and she'd fallen, and this time, she broke her hip.
Shit. This is so not what we wanted for her.
Anyway. That's depressing and I don't feel like going into it anymore, so... :P Yeah. Onto a more pleasant topic-
remixredux sign ups started!
I've never done a Remix before, so I'm childishly excited. I was debating seriously about the issue of a safe story. There's only one story I don't want people messing with, and it's ineligable anyway since WIPs can't be remixed. (AIL, obviously.) I ended up chosing Come Talk to Me just because it is so personal. There's a few others I thought about, not because I have a huge attachment to them, but I think they'd be boring remixes. Like "The Fallacy of Loneliness." Sure, I'm pleased with the writing and it's a nice little ficlet, but there's a lot out there that's along a similar vein. Or "Replace the Fear." In some ways, I hope someone remixes that, because I wasn't super happy with how the story came out. In others, again, it sort of is "been there, done that."
What I'd REALLY love to see (but don't remotely expect) is for someone to remix Mentors. That would be the ultimate in cool. I'm really proud of that story, and I'd love to see someone else's take on the same basic plotline or whatever. Plus, I feel utterly confident that that's one of my better pieces, so I feel completely comfortable that the original would never get lost in the shadow of the remix. I don't know that anyone would take that on, but man... I'd be drooling.
Off to do some writing... maybe. I think someone is whimpering.

Date: 2006-01-30 04:29 pm (UTC)And he's slept for 8 hour stretches?! Lucky ... hee. Two of my three didn't sleep for that long at a time 'til they were about a year old. My girl started that at 3 months though, but girls are smart ones anyway. ;)
I signed up for the remix too. Should be interesting!

What fandoms did you sign up for?

Date: 2006-01-31 03:06 am (UTC)Heh. Well, considering I've only written a decent number of fics in two ... I signed up for HP, and threw in my other main fandom (CSI) just in case, though I'd rather HP. I'm not quite confident enough to tackle a fandom I've never written anything for. Guess I'll see what happens.
That's still good, though, for Toby to sleep even 6 hour stretches, IMO. Heck, Danny is 2 1/2 and still ends up in my bed nearly every night. O_O That's probably my fault, however.

Date: 2006-01-31 01:59 am (UTC)I hope so too, but I know you never know. It would be cool, but hey- we'll see!

Date: 2006-01-30 07:07 pm (UTC)Mentors is your best fic the way I see it. There's no way someone could make it better. It's one of my favorite fics ever.

Date: 2006-01-31 02:00 am (UTC)Actually, what I'd love to see for Mentors (and heck, I'd write it if I had time) is for someone to do a prose piece on Alphard's life with the letters coming in or something. Or the Alphard/McG friendship. That would be cool. Not so much an improvement as a different angle. But I'm not holding my breath!

Date: 2006-01-31 06:13 am (UTC)"Mentors" would be a cool remix, the background behind the epistolaries would be neat, especially from Alphard's POV. (May I say that is one of my favorite stories of yours.)

Date: 2006-01-31 04:39 pm (UTC)I can understand why they don't, but it would be cool to have a "preferred story to be remixed" spot on the signups. I'm hoping my remixer will be "inspired" ;) And to be honest, when I get my assignment it would be cool to know what the person might like to see... if I knew they were flexible.
And thanks :)

Date: 2006-02-01 04:24 am (UTC)The one about James is pretty unique and could be pretty interesting, I think it would be a good remix. So that is what I am hoping for. James is another underrated character. Either way though.

Date: 2006-02-01 01:31 pm (UTC)I wouldn't mind seeing a remix of A Boy Thing because it would be interesting to see what angle they came in from. A Lily-falls-in-love-with-James story would be one possibility. I'm not sure what I would do with it if I had to write it. Now there's a challenge- remix your own stories. But I agree that James is completely underrated. Which reminds me, I need to upload my James icon.
