Okay, we finished Firefly last night. Kicked ass and all that. And if I were going to write Firefly fanfic, I know exactly where my slot would be. Gen. There is so much good gen stuff you could write- so much action and adventure, so many backstories....

SO MUCH ABOUT WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON WITH BOOK??????? Did we miss it? Is it in the movie? WHAT IS HIS BACKSTORY?

Stupid Fox.

I'm kind of thinking he used to be some sort of assassian (or still is) for the Alliance. The man is definitely a sharp shooter (I've never shot, but kneecaps are tiny targets), he's way up there obviously in rank, he's not in trouble with the Alliance... damn. It would be really cool to do something with Book. Book is begging for fanfic.

I won't write it, though. I don't think I can do fanfic from TV shows. It's not snobbery, or anything. It's that I can mimic a character's dialogue if I read it, but I can't seem to do it if I'm hearing it. Maybe it has to do with my hearing loss, I'm not sure. Maybe it's just me. I find it hard to take dictation as well. But I've tried several times to write my Toby Zeigler - Severus Snape fic (200% gen, thank you very much, because anything else with those two together is just EW), and I can't seem to do it. Which is annoying, but not that annoying.

Anyway, now that we've seen the series, we need to watch the movie again. Some of the things that I thought would be references to the series weren't, and I know I missed a lot. Definitely need to watch Serenity again.

In other news, I give up on trying to control my Remix, given that there's less than a week left. (I will get it done.) Fine. Be a beast. Just know I'm going to have a LOT to say about you when the reveal happens.

Well, I think it's different - harder - with Sorkin or Jossverse shows, because the dialogue is *so* stylized. Most tv shows *don't* have that kind of highly idiosyncratic dialogue style, and you can see that Wells et al. on West Wing haven't really been able to capture the Sorkinese either. So you know, you should give it a shot. Firefly's an awful lot of fun to write in.

As for Book, yeah, I think we're being told he was like the Operative (per the movie), or he was some kind of high ranking military man with the Alliance (per Safe).

I think they purposely left out the back story for Book so fanfic writers would have something to do. I have every episode, own the movie, own all three comic books and even have the official RPG book for the series and I got nothing on him out of it. The only thing I know that few others don't is why he left Serenity between the end of the series and the movie because it's in the comic books. I'm pretty sure Joss meant for Book to take his secrets to the grave from the very beginning.

Firefly is a wonderful show, and the fact that we know so little about Book is a tradgedy, but then it's also good because it gives us a lot to work with in our minds. I'm definatly agreeing with you that he was someone high up in the alliance and assassin/operative is a good example. One of the things my friend Dan (Little Felt Fangs) said to me, as he showed me what I think was the last episode of the series, is to look at how the Operative works. He takes out each character using their weakness. I mean, people like Kaylee he took out by using her fears, but look how he treats Book? He just slugs him one. And he does it fast. He obviously considers book a physical threat, which is interesting.
Yeah, Book was very cool, it is tradgic we will know so little of him...
