Also, another world building question. If you see religion in a fantasy world, do you feel gypped if the god/gods never make an appearance? I'm planning on having religion, and it's quite important in that there are two different ones and they have some very different structures. But I plan on treating it like religion on Earth. Some people are very religious, others are not, and no one knows who's right because if there are signs from the god/gods, they tend towards the subtle.

If this was not a fantasy novel, I wouldn't even think of asking. But the appearance of gods seems like a fantasy standard if you're going to use religion.

The majority of the time the gods/goddesses don't make an appearance in the things I've read, so I think that's fine.

No, not at all. I think a good fantasy world culture has to have some element of religion in it, and whether it's like ours or one where the gods are a more active participants depends on the kind of world you want to create. I love fantasy stories that have a very realistic religious aspect to them, especially when it adds to both people's personal behavior and their political environment.

I've actually thought about this a lot for the same reason. I've got a world where I want religion to have the same feel as it does in our world (or did, a few hundred years ago), and the magic in the world isn't necessarily connected to that. But it's still there.

No, not at all. Actually, when they're used as a literal deus ex machina, I feel more gypped when they do. Realistic fake religions are interesting whether or not the gods themselves actually make an appearance, imho.

Actually, I don't like it when gods show up, unless it's a well-telegraphed and integral part of the story - Dragonlance did this well. When they show up and change things for the characters, it's extremely annoying, especially when this happens more than once.

A better expression of my position than I'd have produced.

And, ack! I not only blanked on Aaron Sorkin and LotR, but also Joss Whedon (which YOU gave me on DVD!). It's good that I can fall back on the claim that I was sleep deprived. :-)

Enjoy those brain cells now, because I swear they take a vacation once a baby shows up. And baby farts are powerful enough to alter the space-time continuum :)

Are you guys all set?
