::sigh:: For the most part, we've been doing pretty well with potty training. Today, however, we had three accidents. "Mommy, I have to pee on the potty" is great if it's BEFORE he pees, not right after.

We also got our alumni magazine from grad school today- the one dedicated to our program. Yeah, that made me feel ever so significant. :P

Also? The handyman turned off the water during the kids' lunchtime. Let me tell you, THAT was fun.

I got a lot of needlepoint done today, which is nice. I'm very annoyed because I have a story kicking around in my head, and I'm having a hard time writing it. On the one hand, I don't want to write it because I'm afraid it will be a gateway into BSG fanfic. On the other hand:

1.) I'm doing NaNoWriMo, which will kick me into my original stuff. And once I get started, hopefully that will be clinched.

2.) I don't seem to have any other BSG related ideas, so maybe if I just go ahead and write it, it will go away.

3.) IF I do Remix again this year, it would be nice to be able to list BSG. Except that I'm so not a Kara/Lee shipper, and while I am TOTAL Adama/Roslin shipper I want the series, not the fic, and it seems like most of the fic in BSG focuses on one of those two pairings.

Anyway, the idea is working with Gaeta and Zarek- gen between them- and the dynamic that's GOT to be there but we don't even see a hint of in the show. Not that my specific dynamic has to be there, just that Zarek was VP and Gaeta was CoS- they had to have worked together. And sort of going a bit father/son for a while, or mentorish, and then a glorious crash and burn, with a slow rebuild. I think I could do it, although I'm finding the political part difficult.

The problem is that I see two different formats for this story. One is a "Five Things" format, which would focus exclusively on Zarek's point of view and be a shorter story. The other is a longer, more epic story that would focus on both points of view, and could include other characters like Dee and Cottle and Roslin (because I also like unrequited Zarek/Roslin). My gut is saying I should go for the shorter story, as I'm new to the fandom and people are more likely to read a shorter piece by an unknown author. My fingers itch to tell the longer story. I suspect the compromise (If I really must write it, and there are six pages idly written on my open Word file) is to write the Tom POV first, and then do a companion piece from Gaeta's POV.

But I'm still fighting it kicking and screaming. I've expressed my reservations about it before, and they're still there. But sometimes it seems like it would just be easier to give in and write the stupid story so it goes away and leaves me the frak alone :P

I also have a new Final Cylon theory. Assuming that a.) the Final Five are from Earth, and b.) they've been around the Colonies for quite a while, Cavil is actually the last of the Final Five, and he created the Significant Seven. But he's one of the Seven? No. That's why he's #1. He made seven other models, and the reason we've never seen model 7 and there's a model 8 is because the Sevens have been boxed, except for a single sleeper agent who is still (or was still) with the Fleet. The only thing I don't like about that theory is that it makes 4 of the final 5 male, and I don't think that makes sense. I'm still clinging to that last one needs to be female.

Anyway, enough rambling. Hope everyone is having a good day!

I'm really interested by your ideas of a Zarek and Gaeta fic! I too feel there must be an untold story here. I don't know if it would be a friendly relationship though. Gaeta wouldn't like that Zarek took Dee, etc, hostage on the prison ship. And Zarek later on signed Gaeta's death warrant even though there was no real evidence against him. If there was a father/son bond it looks like Zarek disowned him.

BTW, you may be onto something with this story. I've heard in the new BSG trailer (that has only been shown at cons) there is a clip of Zarek and Gaeta arguing. So this area is definitely worth looking into. I'd read it!

Ooh! I love your final cylon theory. It does make sense. I love the idea that the 7s were boxed. I don't really have a problem with 4 of the 5 being male. Yeah, there's more male cylons than female cylons, but the girl cylons have always had bigger roles. BSGs the least sexist scifi show ever.

Thanks!

Actually, the signing of the death warrant would be the big crash and burn :) I suspect Zarek would be very bitter that he took a stand and went to prison, and as far as he knew Gaeta (whom he has paternal feelings towards in this) collaborated, because he wouldn't find out the real truth until after Laura was sworn back in. (According to the commentary, the confrontation betweeen Roslin/Adama and Zarek came after Chadwick's death.) And there could be a lovely poignant scene of Laura telling Zarek what he almost did... can you just see the angst?

The trailer is what actually set me off. What I'd really love to know about that trailer is what Gaeta was wearing when they were arguing (basically I want to know if he stays military). That was actually the way I wanted to end the fic, leading to them working together.

And thanks on the cylon theory. It's not sexism that makes me think 4 of the 5 can't be male, because I agree with you that BSG is Least Sexist Show Ever. But more the idea that if this theory worked, 5 models were on Earth, and then the other seven were created later. Why would there be 4 male and one female model? It's not so much sexism as it is logic- I just can't really make that idea work, unless there's some other good reason. But if they evolved, then the idea that only one female evolved just doesn't quite make sense.

I also have to wonder about this whole Sagataron/New Caprica story that was dropped. Zarek would have had a role in that and I think Baltar was implicating Gaeta for those problems.

Also even if you are not doing Zarek/Gaeta slash I'd wonder if Zarek might be privy to a Gaeta/Baltar relationship during the New Caprica peroid. With the Sagatarons extremist religious views I have to wonder if they tollerate homosexuality.

I'm wondering how they're going to bring that in. I saw an interview where Juliani said they're bringing back in the secret, but I wonder if it will actually be the same secret. Especially since I think on the podcast Moore said something about the Saggitaron/New Caprica thing was Tom's baby, and Baltar actually put him in detention for that. (I think, although I could be wrong. Makes sense in that a.) I can totally see Zarek lying to Roslin when he tells her why he's in prison, and b.) Zarek was awfully clean shaven for being in detention for four months.)

I've wondered the same thing about the Saggitarons and all. Actually, I've got an OC in mind for Felix, but I'm very hesitant to write it because I haven't figured out how the BSG fandom reacts to OCs yet. Basically, the idea is there's a young Saggitaron teacher who works with Roslin and lives away from the Saggitarons because he doesn't want them discovering that he is homosexual. And he eventually gets involved with Gaeta, which Roslin is somewhat aware of, especially as she lives right next door to the kid. (The idea of Roslin overhearing them having sex amuses me to no end, but it would also be advantageous for her to overhear them fighting.) Anyway, Gaeta and the teacher get together, although I write my relationships rather messy, so faith would be a big issue between them. Eventually, I'd be mean and give Gaeta's lover appendicitis, and he'd agree to go Cottle only if Gaeta agrees to go to temple one day. He'd be recovering from surgery when the Cylons invaded (thus explaining why he's not in the schoolhouse.) And then, of course, he'd be killed in the Saggitaron temple raid. And then there could be a lovely bitter scene where the Saggitarons are burying their dead but don't let non-Saggitarons come to the burial ground, and Roslin is standing on the edge and sees Felix standing there as well, unable to attend the burial, and even though she's quite bitter at him, she recognizes his grief and tries to offer a moment of solidarity. Baltar (because he's way too self-absorbed and Felix didn't tell him anyway) would have no idea of any of this, but it would really sharpen why a.) Felix reacted SO badly, and b.) he was in Joe's bar drinking the episode after trying to kill Baltar. (Because Roslin's a big softie and would completely have sympathy at that point, and manage to convince Adama.)

Sorry. Got a bit carried away :)

Anyway, I was planning on having Zarek know about the relationship (there's actually a rough draft of the scene I'm using in this post (http://lls-mutant.livejournal.com/194930.html#cutid1)), but he doesn't strike me as very religious, despite being Saggitaron. In my head, Zarek's problem is more that Gaeta is Chief of Staff and is going to get screwed over than that they're both male. Zarek realizes quickly how useless Baltar is and is totally fine with it, since he thinks it will give him more power, but he needs Gaeta to be working because damn it, you can't run the world alone :)

My impression of the show is that homosexuality- except in extreme religious sects- would be no big deal to most of the characters, but yeah, there's definitely room to play with homophobia!

Not much to add here except to say I love all these ideas! I would read either of these fics for sure. I especially love your idea for Roslins role!

If I could write angst, I'd consider stealing that unwritten Sagittaron teacher idea from you ;-P So this mean that you need to write it!

You know, I totally forgot about this until you read it. I wonder if it would fit a prompt for the lbqtfest?

Hi! I say go with the longer fic. You seem to really want to do it. Or maybe you need to write it, which is almost the same thing, but not. So what if you're new? Then again, I might be biased because, hey, more Gaeta. :-)

As for the rest, oh noes! Does that make Cavil Cylon God? I like the idea of a female last Cylon. What about Roslin? I've almost convinced myself it's her. But maybe not. Hmm.

Yeah, that is the pull, isn't it? I like Zarek a lot, but Gaeta's the character that actually interests me the most. Plus, writing science is a hell of a lot easier for me than writing politics!

I'm thinking not Cylon god per se, but creator. It would be interesting, anyway. My other theory is simply that the fourth is in the Fleet and D'Anna didn't think Tigh would ever come over, so already gave him up as a lost cause. But Cavil sure does keep his distance a lot of times.

I keep thinking Roslin makes a lot of sense (especially since every time there's a joke about someone being a Cylon they actually are), but at the same time I keep thinking it would be a huge cheat for Roslin. But I keep thinking that last one MUST be female. If the five are fundamentally different from the seven, then it makes more sense if the fifth is a female. But there are only so many interesting non-Cylon females (Roslin, Starbuck, Dee, Cally, Ellen, and a few others) that I just... I don't know. the only one I can manage to discount is Cally, because she was in the position to hear the music at the nebula and was not activated and clearly knew nothing about it. (Unless the antidepressants were affecting her?) But Laura feels like a cheat to me.

::Sigh:: What it comes down to is there are only two people I'm 100% convinced can't be the last cylon, and that's Lee and Papadama. Everyone else... it can work.

Hee! Gaeta is the pull. I'm glad you don't mind me saying that. Zarek is interesting too, but Gaeta.

I stopped stewing over the Final Cylon once I realize the show wasn't going to give us that right away. It could be anyone. I agree with you about Lee and Adama. Not them. I don't think Dee, either, she didn't hear the music. But anyone else is fair game. Probably not Hoshi or Hotdog, either, though wouldn't that be interesting?

You follow your instincts and write your story. I will certainly be on the lookout for it. It will be your first BSG fic, right? And the first fic in a fandom is special. :-)

Yeah. Gaeta is special. Aside from being quite hot in an utterly geeky way (I really hope he never loses the geekiness), he's just such a complicated character with so little screentime. Plus, I have to admit he totally reminds me of my husband. Not at all in looks (hubby's a bit more the Chief type), but the personality. There need to be more hot geek guys on TV. (I've also been kicking around the idea of a BSG/Firefly crossover where Gaeta and Simon become best friends, because that could just have so much potential.)

But I have to admit, I'm also old enough that Zarek can be on my screen any time he wants, too. Especially if he's wearing the black leather jacket he has on in his Wiki photo. Hubby made me watch some of the old series, and boy- the series didn't age well but he sure did! (I'd take the old Apollo over the new Apollo any day of the week.) And it amazes me that more women do not watch this show. Seriously, between Helo, Gaeta, Anders, Zarek, Baltar and Apollo (neither of whom do anything for me, but obviously do for others), Chief (who does, which explains why the other two don't)... how many hot guys can one intelligent show have, I ask you? Ahem. That was deep.

Yeah, I'm not stewing on the Cylon. I like thinking about it, but the truth is I don't think they can shock us with the identity. There are too few candidates. I think the shocker will be more along the lines of the makeup or the reason the Cylon has stayed hidden or how the Cylon is revealed- not so much who it is. I saw an interview that Aaron Douglas said he never even suspected the person of being the last Cylon, and I can't think of who I would put in that category right now. :) I also have been thinking it's not Dee, just because she got so little screen time in Season 4.

And yeah, this would be/probably will be my first BSG fic. It'll be interesting to see how it turns out!

That's kind of why I like Tobey MacGuire's Spiderman. I don't like Tobey in all things, but geeky Peter Parker with a mission and also trying to stay a regular boy . . . I totally think he's cuddly and somewhat hot in that role. *distracted for a moment by geeky hotness*

Um, okay! Yes, Gaeta. :-) I don't think of Gaeta as that hot physically, though I can certainly see the appeal. (Those curls! Lemme at 'em!) But personality-wise he makes me so woobie and protective of him. Actually, I revise that. I think his personality is totally appealing, thus making the entire package of Gaeta so. :-D Tried to resist, see? Can't. Not possible.

This show can have as many hot guys as it wants. Hee! As long as they can act. Seriously. :-) Everyone on this show can be really attractive from Crashdown to Racetrack to Lt. Case. Even Simon has a bit of . . . panache.

I am so glad of the recent talk about Gaeta. Gaeta talk is buzzing! Fic will follow! Yay!!!!!!
