The Webisodes, Spoiler Edition
Dec. 12th, 2008 02:38 pmOkay. Here's what we know. We all know (or we do now) that we're flashing back to the New Caprica, and Felix's little romance with an Eight. However, I'm thinking that the romance might not be the secret. Because, come on. Everyone knows that Baltar slept with a Cylon, Helo's MARRIED to a Cylon, and Tyrol was in love with a Cylon. No one tossed them out the airlock.
BUT.
That list that Gaeta's writing... I'm worried he's not writing it in the Raptor. I'm wondering if he's writing it on New Caprica.
I've always wondered what all Gaeta had to do in his role as inside man on New Caprica. Because, you know, he was probably asked to do a lot more than just read announcements and type memos. One of the things I wanted to do- but didn't manage to bring myself to do it- when I wrote Youth's Final Luxury was to point out that "helping the Cylons" probably meant more than bringing them bagels and refreshing their coffee. How did he get their trust?
I'm starting to think that maybe that list he was writing was a rough draft of a detention list or a death list. Maybe not intentionally. I'm thinking maybe the Eight betrayed him and had him write it for a different reason and then gave it to the Cylons. I hope I'm wrong- I often am.
The Eight kiss- I'm pretty sure, given what we know, that she's kissing Gaeta. Could anyone figure out what he was wearing in that shot? I am very much hoping that it was a flashback. I can handle a former Gaeta/Eight relationship. I do NOT want to see him cheat on Hoshi.
I am pleased that Hoshi is going to go chasing Gaeta. That makes me very happy (as does the fact he's going with Racetrack!).
Big spoilers, here, for the rest of the webisodes. What I found was the summary of each one- one sentence, doesn't give TOO much away.
1. While on his way to get some R&R Gaeta?s Raptor makes an unexpected detour.
2. While stranded in the middle of space, Gaeta and the other passengers realize that time ?and air is limited.
3. Gaeta realizes that he knows one of the Eights more than he lets the others believe.
4. The passengers begin to suspect foul play.
5. While trying to preserve the air supply, Gaeta thinks back to the Eight he knew on New Caprica.
6. Gaeta decides to go with the Eight?s plan on getting them home.
7. As Hoshi and Racetrack search for the missing Raptor, Gaeta realizes that he might not be as safe as he thought.
8. With almost all the passengers dead, Gaeta realizes that sometimes it?s hope in others that blinds you.
9: With the help of the Eight, Gaeta makes some harsh realizations about himself.
10: With no hope of rescue in sight, Gaeta has to make a final decision about his future.
The ones that intrigue me are 9 and 10.
In terms of 9: what realizations is Gaeta making? Here are a few off the top of my head:
1.) He's done everything he condemned Gaius Baltar of doing- slept with a Cylon during the Occupation, betrayed his people, and went for the drugs.
2.) He's a morpha addict. Seriously- I can see where this one might be VERY possible. It's minor enough that it makes sense to put it in the webisodes, but yeah, an addiction would be a big thing. (I also really like this one because it doesn't totally assassinate his character.)
3.) He's a sleeper agent. I can't tell who's cutting their hand. I THINK it's Gaeta, but it would also make sense for it to be an Eight, doing something similar to Flight of the Phoenix when Athena stuck the fiber optic cable up her arm. But if Gaeta thinks he's a Cylon... you see where I'm going?
4.) He killed all these people. The thing about that is making Gaeta the killer seems like an AWFULLY big thing to do in a webisode.
Any other good thoughts for revelations?
As far as 10 goes, since Gaeta doesn't think he's going to make it back, I'm assuming that Hoshi will find him. It looks like all of the other passengers may be dead, except maybe the eight. (I really wonder who's doing all the killing, although it's very possible that it's one of the others and Gaeta killed them before they could kill him.) I am very, very, very much hoping that Hoshi and Gaeta do not end up breaking up in the last 3 minutes of this. I am also very, very much hoping that Gaeta isn't hooking back up with the Eight. Although I'd like to think that they won't do that. That seems very cheap and easy.
Please, though, let us get a nice reunion scene with Gaeta and Hoshi. This is already dark- let's add a little happiness. Plus, I am REALLY hoping the pairing makes it over to the show, just because I've defended it so much. I don't want to be wrong.
Another comment: if anyone else falls in love with an Eight, I WILL scream. Three main male parts in love with the Eights? If I was single and looking, I'd be asking where I can get some of that programming. (Although it would be nice to see an Eight act evil-ish for a bit, please.)
I do think it's kind of funny that Skiffy got all "look! Gaeta and Hoshi almost kiss", and there were people talking about "full on making out", and it looks like this is almost more about Gaeta/Sharon than it is about Gaeta/Hoshi. (Although it seems like we're going to be seeing stuff from Hoshi's side of it.) I mean, I don't really mind, because I'm more interested in the emotional stuff, but dude- who's version of "full on making out" is that, and how much must their sex life SUCK?
Anyway. I really ought to think about eating lunch at some point. More babbling later, I'm sure!

Date: 2008-12-12 08:27 pm (UTC)He could be addicted to drugs, but really, I woould call shennanigans and "character trashing" on that simply because they really don't have the resources for anyone to be a dope addict.

Date: 2008-12-12 09:00 pm (UTC)You're right that they don't have the resources- which is exactly why Hoshi would have had to do Ishay that huge favor. Felix didn't get that morpha legally- I'm sure that's why Hoshi was looking over his shoulder when he approached. And Hoshi probably isn't thinking of it too seriously yet, because it's only been maybe two weeks. Felix is still obviously in a lot of pain, and I can see Hoshi thinking "he really does need it" still and not "he's getting addicted." Heck, I can see Felix thinking that, too.
That's one development I actually think is a good idea. It's just the right size for the webisodes, and is interesting but not so crucial that you MUST know the whole thing to understand the show, but I can see where they can work it in a little.

(not intending to sound pissed off but really, the gay is a drug addict, hmmmm)

Date: 2008-12-12 09:39 pm (UTC)I had one dose. One. During an emergency C-section. And I still went through a mild withdrawal. That stuff is ADDICTIVE.
Yeah, the others all went through without having to do this, but Felix is also the only one who's lost a limb. It doesn't bother me at all, because I don't think it's a stereotype- I think it's realistic. If it had just been a gunshot, I'd be with you. But given what he's gone through... not only that, he stayed awake for the amputation and was back at duty four days later. Let's see any of the cool kids do THAT- Starbuck whined and stayed in bed for several days when she messed up her knee.

Date: 2008-12-12 09:17 pm (UTC)Guh, I spent my mag budget on Sci Fi instead of EW, but EW pimps the shit that is Twilight, therefore, they are untrustworthy. Or so says I.

Date: 2008-12-12 09:40 pm (UTC)Plus, I'm really getting sold on the idea that that's part of his realization he has to come to. Maybe he gives up his last dose to let his Eight die peacefully or something.

Although your comment made me think... do you think Jane Espenson was remembering Reavers when she started coming up with this? That's actually what that bit with him cutting his hand makes me think of, after "let's see if I can shove a cable up here and reprogram the computer!"
