Okay, f-list. Question for you.

There's a couple of you out there that say you have been spoiled. Me, I don't mind being spoiled. In fact, on this particular matter I WANT to be spoiled, because I will enjoy the book much more if I know it's coming.

I've seen the rumor/spoiler that Tonks falls for Lupin. HOWEVER, I have reasonable reasons to be doubtful of the validity of the poster- not the least of which is that I have no clue as to who they are (and some of the other spoilers seemed a bit unlikely to me). Is there anyone out there that can elaborate on this particular rumor/spoiler/whatever? (Especially on Lupin's feelings in return, if they're known?)

Thanks muchly! :)

The rumours I've heard is that feelings are felt in return but by the end the state of play is very much left up in the air.

Aargh. Why am I more nervous about HBP now?

Same rumor I've heard. ::sigh:: But I really do wonder just how valid it is, y'know? It seems like something like that is something you'd have to read pretty carefully for. The idea of a major character dying... it was easy to find that out very quickly. A minor romance... doesn't that just seem like it would be hard to catch flipping through? Plus JKR has said don't trust anything unless it- yadda yadda yadda. Maybe I should just go weed the garden and not think about it!

The way I heard it was that someone had a pretty good read through. The way I see it, the larger bookstores can take the risk of legal action but with the smaller stores, it could be easier for a book to slip through the net.

*smacks hand Dobby style* Maybe I should go and watch a film.

Curious. I've heard these too. Why does it matter?

Date: 2005-07-10 08:13 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lls-mutant.livejournal.com
Two reasons:

1.) I'm silly and obsessive and like the idea of R/S staying canon. I know it could, even if a T/L relationship was mutual, but still. But more than that...

2.) I kind of wish Tonks would stay unattached. I LIKE her single and not worrying about the fact. Especially since there's so much emphasis in fanon on shipping (in canon, I guess there's barely any. But still!)

Just one of those things I want to know....

I like the idea of R/S remaining canon too (or at least, not flat out denied). I just figure, we'll all find out soon enough about Remus/Tonks or any other ship.

I'm just wondering what ship wars are going to brew...(gets popcorn ready)

I wouldn't believe anything anybody says until next Saturday. I don't mind being spoiler, either, but people posting so-called spoilers these days are likely just making stuff up, so it's pretty ridiculous. (And if they aren't just making stuff up, they're risking genuine legal action. as JKR and her publishers have made abundantly clear.) It's like rumours in high school. (Just one of the many, many ways the HP resembles high school...but that's a whole rant by itself.)

But, really, who hasn't fallen for Lupin? Anyone? Anyone? Right. NO ONE. It is the natural state of the universe. Chicks dig the scruffy werewolf. JKR knows that. She likes him herself.

Anyway, no matter what happens, it ain't going to be a big part of the books. *shrugs* I used to care a lot about Remus' canon love life, but I find it really hard to get worked up now. Besides, if he's got a love life, that means he's actually GOING TO BE IN THE BOOK ENOUGH FOR THE KIDS TO GOSSIP ABOUT HIM. That's a good thing. No more vanishing werewolf, thankyouverymuch!

How was Baltimore?

Er. I meant that the HP fandom resembles high school. Since the books take place in a high school (basically), that wasn't a very meaningful remark as written. *sigh*

Shoot. My answer just got deleted.

but people posting so-called spoilers these days are likely just making stuff up

See, that's exactly what I'm thinking. (And I knew what you meant about the fandom being high school ;) ) I mean, I wasn't on LJ or active in the fandom before OotP, but NOWHERE did I hear that Sirius was the Big Death. (I didn't know until I looked at the last few pages when my book came ;) ) And Lupin/Tonks seems like it would be such a minor detail that it would be hard to pick that up unless you read the book, which I doubt many people have been able to do.

Plus, I always trust rumors more when they're correctly spelled ;)

I used to care a lot about Remus' canon love life, but I find it really hard to get worked up now

I'm trying to get to that phase, and really hoping I do once HBP comes out. I'm seeing a very, very promising trend in my writing, which is the huge desire to write genfic oneshots. (Thank God.) And good point about no more vanishing werewolf! :)

Baltimore was lovely, thanks :) We stayed at our favorite B&B, and got to actually SEE each other for a while. And the Red Sox lost, which I don't care about except for it annoys hubby's best friend, and annoying hubby's best friend is ALWAYS fun :)

That's really interesting, because I've been thinking the same thing lately. And even stories (like my Chocolate Factory crackfic crossover) that totally could be Remus/Sirius, which very little effort on my part, just work so much better in my mind as genfic. Weird.

I literally let out a Sirius-like bark of laughter! God - that's SO true! (And Sirius agrees whole-heartedly! *g*)

As for spoilers... I don't really mind so much either. I'm not inclined to believe them until I read it myself anyway, but, with regard to R/T...

To be honest, nothing is going to stop my shipping R/S. Nothing. Not even JKR holding a press release where she states it's a preposterous notion. The more I re-read, the more hints I see, and it's not like I'm actively looking for words that I can twist to make them fit my beliefs. It's just something that I see, period, and that's not ever going to change. And now that Sirius is dead, well, unless Remus is going to follow him, I don't want him living the rest of his life alone and lonely and pining. It's possible to love more than one person in your lifetime.

I'm really not that worried about it, to tell you the truth. And think of what the subtextual backstory could be: Tonks knows about R/S and wants to help him 'live' again. I can't see where - if there IS a relationship between Remus and Tonks - that she'd go into all (or any) of the details of how it started and why. What purpose would that have towards the plot?

We'll know in 5 days. Until then, I take everything I hear with a grain of salt

Heh. Yeah, for all that Remus is detested in the HP world, he could really clean up with us real-life babes ;)

I totally agree that I don't want Remus lonely and pining. That's just not right. The big reason I would wonder about it is that Tonks is Sirius's cousin. But then, that connection... you could have a lot of fun with that. Especially since the same rumor has it they aren't blissfully in Twu Wuv at the end. (Gads. I'm already spinning why not in my head.)

And yeah, I'm pretty much taking everything I've read on the Spoiler Zone there with a grain of salt as well. It could be true... or we could open up to the back of the book and find out the Big Death was Molly Weasley or something that no one's really been speculating about.

Nah. Me, neither. The story, in my mind, has already left JKR's pages far behind and loped into a whole different dimension.

It's possible to love more than one person in your lifetime.

Of course it is! But it's amazing how many HP fans -- R/S shippers in particular -- find that idea completely at odds with True Love.

I think if Remus/Tonks does make an appearance, which is completely plausible, it will be along the lines of Bill/Fleur or Percy/Penelope. Commented on, maybe joked about, but they ain't going to snogging on the kitchen table for all the kiddies to see, and they ain't going to be revealing all the secrets of the Half-Blood Prince and the Heir of Gryffindor and Draco's True Alleigances through their love. It won't be that important.

I agree with the posters above, and you. I wouldn't be surprised if it happens, and I'll be very happy if it means we get to avoid disappearing werewolf syndrome, but I'm taking everything with a grain of salt until I'm reading the last chapter (first, probably, knowing me ;) ) Most of the other spoilers out right now sound kind of implausible to me (with one notable exception).

If it does happen, I hope it will happen in a way that leaves R/S possible, but even if it doesn't, I'm far too convinced at this point to stop 'shipping them. I've always wanted to go to Egypt anyway. ;)

But, really, who hasn't fallen for Lupin? Anyone? Anyone? Right. NO ONE. It is the natural state of the universe. Chicks dig the scruffy werewolf. JKR knows that. She likes him herself.

Yeah. If it leaves R/S possible, then I'll be okay-ish. (But I'd still rather Tonks didn't shack up with anyone.)

There were two that rang very true to me: Dumbledore dying, and Minerva worrying about if Hogwarts can go on without DD (I suspect he imparts a lot of Hogwarts' protection against Voldemort).

Of course, in the alledged book jacket synopsis I saw, Privet Drive wasn't even spelled correctly, so I wonder :)

And yeah. Egypt may be seeing me, too!

Yeah, I like enjoy having a strong female character who's as (apparently) happily single and not looking, too. Although, tying in with what [livejournal.com profile] ignipes said above, we could hardly blame her for falling for him if she does! :)

There were two that rang very true to me: Dumbledore dying, and Minerva worrying about if Hogwarts can go on without DD (I suspect he imparts a lot of Hogwarts' protection against Voldemort).

Those are the ones that sound most plausible to me too, especially the former, although, after all this speculation, it will be pretty funny if Dumbledore ends the series still happily handing out sherbet lemons. I wouldn't put it past him either. :)

Of course, in the alledged book jacket synopsis I saw, Privet Drive wasn't even spelled correctly, so I wonder.

I noticed that too. The quality of the writing of that thing in general was so appalling that if it does turn out to be real, JKR should sue. I have no idea what she could sue for, granted, but I've seen bad fanfics with better writing.

Now, I could be dead wrong about this, but I found that rumour (along with the whole Bill-as-a-werewolf thing) unlikely for one fairly simple reason: it puts more focus on secondary adult characters than all the other books combined. Considering that the majority of the action has, and probably always will, takes place at Hogwarts and mainly concern the Trio, I doubt that JKR would take enough time to introduce both a potential romance between two characters and make another Dark Creature unless they were necessary to the plot. And honestly, I can't imagine how either of these things would affect the main plot in any way: to be honest, the Remus/Tonks thing sounds mainly like fanservice to me.

But that could be me trying to talk myself out of dreading spoilers that I don't want to be true (well... at least for the first one. The Bill-as-a-werewolf one has some potential, if only because it could inspire some nifty fanfiction). Actually, you know what? That is exactly what I'm doing right now: this is a spoiler I don't want to be true, so I'm trying to convince myself that it can't be. But I don't think that my emotional reasons invalidate my logic.

If it does turn out to be true... Eh. I doubt I'm ever going to like Remus/Tonks (in part because I'm around Tonks's age and I find myself projecting my own morals onto the characters. I really cannot read a R/T story without imagining what I would say if she was one of my friends. "Guess what? I'm in love! Okay, he's nearly fifteen years older than me and he's got an incurable disease that not only makes him unemployable but completely isolates him socially! But don't worry, my love will cure all that!" I know that fantasy isn't reality and that I shouldn't judge a fanfic pairing by those standards but I just can't stop myself) and I'll probably never stop liking R/S, even if it's no longer canon. Yeah, I'd prefer that it remain a canon-plausible pairing, but it was the potential dynamic between the characters, along with their long history of betrayal that attracted me, and as long as there are people out there writing the pairing, I'll probably continue reading it.

Oh and I really do share your fear about what will happen if this rumour does turn out to be true. People have built up all this really ridiculous antipathy to the R/S pairing and I get the feeling that if R/T is confirmed as canon, there will be a lot of pointless gloating and screeching. It's really sad, because if I wanted that kind of drama, I'd be more of a Trio shipper, you know?

Date: 2005-07-11 02:52 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lls-mutant.livejournal.com
You know, I know exactly what you're saying about trying to talk yourself out of it, but I also think you're right. The rumors DO put a LOT of emphasis on the adult characters- and there is NOTHING about Harry. Also kind of suspicious that most of the adult characters are fandom favorites.

"Guess what? I'm in love! Okay, he's nearly fifteen years older than me and he's got an incurable disease that not only makes him unemployable but completely isolates him socially! But don't worry, my love will cure all that!"

Heh. What I would love to see is a fic where Tonks had this attitude and LEARNED SHE WAS WRONG. If this rumor is true, I'm really curious to see how JKR will play it out. Apparently, it's rather ambivilent at the end, which leads me to believe that there are some Big Problems in the Tonks/Remus ship then, but unless Tonks or Lupin becomes very close to HArry, I can't see that being a major point.

I do love R/S, but I'm hoping to get a bit out of it once I'm done Accidentally In Love. I really need to write something original. ::Sigh::

And yeah- it's the gloating and screeching I'm worried about. It's also the reason I don't ship Trio, either ;)

Oh, oh...this is why I do not look at such spoilery. I already freak out over my own "what ifs?" without someone else's "official" spoilers. Meh.

IF Remus/Tonks is true, I'll probably cry -- for the same reasons as mentioned by pretty much everyone else. I mean, really. I like Tonks being single and independent and strong. I like it. She's my age and I find that I identify with her.

Of course on the Remus end of that, I just don't want him to be with anyone other than Sirius. But, we all know *wink wink* that Puppy Love is as good as canon. *snort*

Is horrible R/S fangirl as she has no idea what FAP is.

FAP is Fiction Alley Park. Pretty decent discussion forum for all things Harry Potter. There's a thread there exclusively devoted to Remus/Sirius, and there's also a thread there exclusively for people who can't stand Remus/Sirius. And there's multiple debate threads.

I'm wondering about the validity of said spoilers (see my next post if you want them all), but... who knows I'd rather obsess about it now and get over it by Saturday so I can just enjoy the book then find out in the book and get ticked then :) Even though I'll finish the book regardless!
