So hubby's best friend and his wife are having a baby- yay! (I've known this for a while- she's like 5-6 months along.) I'm helping host the baby shower, and I found this adorable cake. I am dying to make it, but I've never worked with rolled fondant before. Has anyone played with it? How difficult is it to work with? I'm a pretty decent cook and good with my hands, so bearing that in mind....

Don't know anything about fondant, sorry. Just wanted to let you know that cake is perfect for the occasion.

That cake is perfect. Rolled fondant is a lot like playing with play-dough, I think you can use cookie cutters on it to make the shapes. Or cut them from a template.

Oooh, thanks! Sounds like it's reasonably easy then.

Try this link to baking911.com. I've never used fondant, but I've used the site for other techniques.

Haven't used it myself, but from what I've read, it's relatively easy to work with, but hard to make from scratch. If you have a store near you that sells cake decorating supplies, they should sell premade fondant (Wilton is one maker) that you can tint the colors of your choice and play with. Practice with it before you actually need to make these for the shower.

If the fondant proves too daunting, you can get virtually the same effect by using a poured frosting (like a thin Royal Icing) on the cake squares and then decorating with piped on frosting. Very easy.

Yeah, I was going to go premade. If this cake proves reasonable to do, I'm thinking of making it again for Toby's first birthday, and the party for that is right after Thanksgiving. So premade is GOOD.

I was thinking about the poured frosting, too. The other thing I wasn't sure about was I think I've heard people say fondant isn't as tasty as other icings? I don't remember.

Fondant tastes like pure sugar--fine if you like pure sugar, but most people don't. Yet another reason to practice with it--and test taste it--before making it for the party

I think fondant is one of the easiest cake coverings to use, so long as you buy it ready-made. You only need to be careful while rolling it that it doesn't get too sticky or dry, and use a jam to stick it to the cake (though there's a difference of opinion as to what you should dust the worktop and rolling pin with - I've always used icing sugar, my mum recommends flour). It's also really easy to colour.

Brushing it with glycerine afterwards gives it a shiny finish.

Good luck!
